It's funny how you used a clip of the millennium bridge and you didn't address that. The fact that it's not in the right timeline. Or why the films don't address at all if it's by accident or not by having it mention or show technology from that time.
@KairiTardisAndMe If I'm not mistaken I believe the films are actually supposed to be set in a more modern point of time, which is why nobody seems to be too into Lisa Frank shit
@acertainjosh I didn't mean it in a critical way, but more on just commenting on it in general. One of the appeals for me and people I know is that the books are set through the years she wrote them. I have no idea if they've addressed what era they're set in.
Having never read the books, I can definitely agree to the fact of how confusing and plotless the movies were. My friends were long time fans of the series and would get really emotionally riled up about things happening, and I would just sit there thinking "man I can't wait for Daniel Radcliffe to star in some other movie" or "wow this scene is colored really well", because I couldn't be bothered to care, because they gave me no reason to.
@dianasof also, book harry would never just stand by looking scared while malfoy offs dumbledore. there's a reason he was petrified in the book instead of cowering.
I cannot thank you enough for pointing this out. I've been touting this for years and never have I found anyone who shares my view (bit.ly/atemporarytitle.blogspot.com/2011/09/sorry-guys-its-time-you-woke-up.html)
I agree wholeheartedly. The movies are fun to a point. But in the end, there is something missing. There have been movies that lived up to the books they were based on (Atonement anyone?). But Harry Potter fails to evoke emotion in the viewers.
I heard that J.K Rowling wrote about the part where the Weasley home burned down, but then took it out while revising, and then David Yates added it to the movie. But I agree that it wasn't taken care of in the rest of the movie. It just happened, and then the characters seemed to have forgotten about it.
i probably would have agreed with this, but i couldn't get past the fact that you were clearly reading from something off to the side. that really bothered the shit out of me.
Wow. I was not with you at all in the beginning but you make a very compelling argument. In fact, I now remember how many people have gotten into the movies without reading the books and have gotten increasingly lost as the movies trudged forward because of the amount they left out but also because of the lack of consistency with its character building. I'm not going to lie though, I will still love the movies. I will love them because of reasons. But I might think twice about how I defend them.
It really annoys me when when people say Harry Potter is shit when they have only watched the movies because the movies are sooooooo shit compared to the books. You cannot say you hate Harry Potter when you've only seen the movies. I, as a die-hard Harry Potter, would have probably hated the films if I never read the book. They relied to heavy on the fact that the people that want to see these movie are already massive fans of the book especially in the 7th movie with the mirror.
hahaha, that was very entertaining. Not that I needed more reason to criticize the movies. I don't utterly hate or love them btw. Oddly, enough the point I was 'really?' was the one you made about Hr/Gy in the book. It did certainly have more presence in the books but I always felt that the whole change in feelings Harry had were utterly out of nowhere but whatever, I don't want to really argue over it, just explain myself.
Anyway, good vid, except the music parts were really loud.
Why are you blaming the director for things such as kiss scene placement and the Hermione question? Wouldn't those really be the area of the screenwriter? Unless David Yates told the screenwriter exactly what to do, it's not really his fault. Plus, though I'm not sure of the extent, wasn't Rowling extremely involved in the making of these movies, especially the screenplays? I could be mistaken about that, but if I'm not, why aren't you blaming her as well? She's the one who approved these movies
If only you could teach my film studies classes. Then they would actually have lectures where someone is actually speaking passionately about the film, raising interesting points that they've come to see and making you think about it, rather than relying only on other people's reviews of the films and elaborating ever so slightly.
Basically, what I'm trying to say is, this is fucking awesome, and please make more when you find the time to do so.
Great points. I will say that I think that Deathly Hallows Part I is a well-made piece of cinema and the best of the Harry Potter films, but honestly, the impact it had on me when I first saw it was really diminished by the feeling of disappointment that I felt after I watched the rushed, impersonal Part II.
Last time I watched this movie, it was with my stepsisters, both of whom have seen all the movies but have never read the books. And it took about as long to explain the movie to them afterwards as it took to actually watch the movie.
As someone who actually did watch a majority of the films (up until part one of Deathly Hallows) before reading a lick of the books, I agree wholeheartedly with everything said here. After Azkaban, I was completely lost with the films and, honestly, my memory of them post-Azkaban was fuzzy and confused, the plots just stopped making sense. And as you said, the films do eventually become a "fill in the blanks" sort of deal. It's disappointing to think they would settle for that.
I hate these God awful movies. Just in that brief scene in this video wherein "Dumbledore" asks Harry about his relationship with Hermione, the massive flaws in his characterization are abundantly clear. Dumbledore, as he is written in the books, is highly perceptive and would know perfectly well that Harry and Hermione have a platonic relationship. And as was pointed out, what the hell does that have to do with Dumbledore anyway? These movies make me very, very, very angry.
"In the movie, this part of the movie serves to show I DON'T EVEN FUCKING KNOW by burning the Weasley's house down for no goddamn reason and then never speaking of it again or even so much as acknowledging it happened mere seconds later." HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
I agree with all your points, and I take the films exactly as you describe, just cliff notes and sight seeing. However I believe these films aren't for telling a great story, it's already been told in the books. Also, if you looked at the camera, you'll look more impressive.
Disgaree with you on Ginny. It never developed properly, even in the books. I consider the way it was written one of JKR's only real mistakes in the books. It was extremely sudden and badly described - all of the eye-gougingly bad sentences about "the beast inside harry's chest" were just bad, and so uncharacteristic of JKR's writing.
I had similar thoughts during DH pt. 2 about the non-existence of Harry and Dumbledore's obsessions with the Hallows... and a few other parts of that movie. It's true, a lot of the series is fan service, but I will say that the scenes they do right they do REALLY right.
This is genuinely interesting. You back up you opinions, and speak well and fluently. I would absolutely *love* to see a more about this -- videos about specific movies, etc. You have a fantastic way with words.
i dont think its a coincidence that i stopped watching the films after the 4th one. i liked em until the third one and then they turned to shit because i didnt feel the same way watching it as i would reading it...and i know youre not supposed to, because they are two different forms of media, however it would have been nice to have more of the essence from the books.
This ALWAYS happens when books are made into movies. The same thing happened for Lord of the Rings, the same was bound to happen for Harry Potter. It's always a disappointment for fans of the books when they analyze the films.
this is why i don't understand it when people say that "never having read the books doesn't make me any less of a fan" or some kind of bullcrap like that. the books are so different from the movies. i don't understand how anybody can be a HP fan based solely on the movies, because as you said, you really wouldn't be able to enjoy it in the slightest without your pre-existing knowledge of the books...
That's rather true... I took what I read from the books and added it to the movies. Its as though you have to read the books to fully enjoy all of harry potter.
All the movies until the fifth were bearable. Sure, I hated the way they cut out all the house-elf storyline in four, but that was the only major issue I took with the series until OotP came out. Then Yates took over and completely bastardized the series, in HBP most of all. Even the last two movies, which I honestly enjoyed, had some HUGE problems (Dobby being brought back felt random as fuck, and was it really necessary to cut Dumbledore's WHOLE BACKSTORY?) So, yeah, it's all Yates's fault.
I think a major issue with the Harry Potter movies is that they were started before the book series was finished. Plots lines that were minor in the first few books ended up being of massive importance, but the filmmakers didn't know this and therefore left out those plot lines.
@geekgrl101 Yes, yes yes! This is the main thing I've been saying since movie #5 (when Yates started directing). They should have waited until all the books were done being written before making the movies. That's where things like messing up SWM (thinking it all had to do with James and cutting out Lily) and Harry/Hermione (thinking Harry would end up with the "main" girl) came from by the filmmakers. And so some things just became incoherent messes in the movies because of that.
I never thought about it that way, but you're right. I may have vaguely registered that everyone looks so incredibly poker faced unless they're smiling (or screaming...) in nearly every movie, but I didn't think much of it.
you're right maybe in there are some awkward moments in the movie that don't make sense but I still love the the harry potter movies and still feel the magic in them
You're absolutely right, from the rest of the films, Harry falling for Cho again or even Luna would have made more sense than his sudden interest in Ginny.
THANK YOU. I hate that these films have been somehow impervious to critical judgement solely because of the huge fan base willing to make them blockbusters. As a huge film fan and a huge HP fan I was disappointed that they too often failed to translate the story well, and this video perfectly outlines that. I maintain that PoA is an outstanding film (though I think I'd say that about every Cuaron film) but it's sad that it is outstanding; it should have been 1/8 of an outstanding franchise.
@Katharine257 The film version of PoA was the film in the series that actually got me to finally read the books for the first time. As a film adaptation the problems were minimal, and all the actors looked like they actually gave a shit, and were pushing things more.
THIS is what I have been complaining for years! I mean..if a person who haven't read the book and only knew the basic concept of harry potter watched the movie, they probably wouldn't understand the whole thing...I completely agree with you for everything thing that you said...they completely lost most of the exciting events on the books and the movie is the main reason why I dont ship Harry/Ginny...
I don't think it's David Yate's fault. I think it's more of the screenwriters' fault. Aren't they the ones who are at fault for writing such terrible emotionless movies? :0
I'm a book-fan, I've never cared much for the movies, but with time I've grown to respect and enjoy them. Hatin' on them did no good for my blood-pressure, personally. I used to be a very angry fan and now I'm at peace.
But the way I got to this peace of mind is by regarding the films as high-budget cliffnotes to the books, complimenting the story and characters but not much more, and I'm okay with this. You put it really well.
I completely agree, if it wasn't for Emma Watson and the preparation for war scene in DH2 there would be nothing I liked about these films. Also, Harry was never on Love potion, he was on Felix Felicis (Luck potion).
This. All of this. I mean, I didn't mind the first three films but then Harry Potter completely lost me. It was clunky and awkward, and I couldn't like the characters. While watching the last film, I cried during the forest scene, and all I could think was how much this scene broke my heart in the books. Then I raged during the rest of the film because they gave up the plot for a more exciting action climax.
I absolutely hate the movies. When I watched half blood prince, I ranted about it almost as much as I ranted about order of the phoenix, which I DETESTED and felt offended by, to be honest, as that book was my favourite. Character development is shallow at most, their relationships are so forced and stiff, and half of the plot doesn't make sense, even if you HAVE read the books!
Oh my god, yes, this. Honestly it was always nice seeing the films and everything because I think it’s always enjoyable to see your favorite books come to life with actors and actresses you respect. But omfg if you did not read the books and fill in the blanks for yourself, and if you were turning to these movies as your primary eye opener to the world of Harry Potter…you’d be as lost as a blind rat in a fucking maze on the bloody moon for god’s sake.
Completely true. I can't say I hate them and that they are shit, but all the Harry Potter movies have saddened me in some way either by points you've addressed or cut-outs of important scenes.
Thank you for this video. I don't even have anything else to add because you said everything I hated about the 6th movie. The emotions and the character development does not come through. I'll always hold the books in high regard - they have a special place in my heart.
Wow, I never even really thought about any of this until you brought it up. Wow. You are completely right though, and I very much agree with you on the whole Ginny/Harry and Dumbledore and Harry stories. They are so awkward in the movies that it's painful to watch.
My only criticism would be to look at the camera more, but I feel like the reference to your notes was worth the continuity of the video. I'd much rather suffer from lack of eye contact than have jump cuts every 10 seconds.
So ridiculously true in every aspect. I always thought I simply just abhorred Bonnie Wright's acting in the films, but now I see it's Yate's underlying fault too.
This video really opens my view on the Harry Potter series, and makes a point of all the failures I shrugged because I didn't want my image of the series to be ruined (You know, the whole THIS SERIES IS SACRED standpoint). I mean, I wouldn't say the movies are crap (but I feel that was for argument reasons), but they are critically flawed in the character department, which is enough to make the movies less enjoyably. Overall great video.
It's funny how you used a clip of the millennium bridge and you didn't address that. The fact that it's not in the right timeline. Or why the films don't address at all if it's by accident or not by having it mention or show technology from that time.

This is everything I've been complaining about for years. Holy shit. Thank god it's not just me.

What Between the Buried and Me song(s) did you use in this?

Great video, and I don't disagree. Just, try to look at the camera more next time.
