@TheUncleArgyle I know what you mean. My dad liked to listen to REM when I was younger, I don't see him much anymore. This brings happy memories with him back to me :)
lexaj23; thanks for sharing. i m 43 n been listening to rem since 17 yrs old. as you and so many others i have found much solace in their music. this track is so beautifully sad yet comforting. i was blessed by your recollections.
This is in my top 5 albums of the 20th century, just magnificent, might even dare to say it's in my top 3...fantastic song, quite brilliant album.Timeless in my opinion,a modern classic. Thanks guys for the memories!!!!
Wow! Thanks to all who responded to my comment. Isn't it amazing what truly exceptional music can do for people? That's the beauty of it-it evokes so many emotions, stirs the soul, and helps to define moments in time. R.E.M. touched a lot of people, and Belong is an example of why. It stands the test of time.
Kurt Cobain said the REM was the most commercial band without being sell outs, stating how they got the recipe correct it is an amazing feat, just strange how no one ever followed their example....
Hard to believe this classic song, as well as the entire album, is 20 years old! But it truly is a timeless piece of work! It is also one of the few albums I have on all three forms of media available at the time of its release, vinyl, cassette, and compact disc.
I found my first R.E.M album a cassette tape, on the side of the road, it was Out of Time. For shits and giggles, I decided I'd play it. Well, it still played, and I've been in love with them ever since!
My heart began to rush, and I could feel the blood at my fingertips. My chest tingled a little, as i listened to this amazing piece of artwork. Many will tell me I am too young to feel deep feelings. I am not shallow, this song is GROUND BREAKING.
So many memories flood back when I hear this album. It came out when I was senior in HS, and my reaction to it today is the same as the first day I ever heard it. So beautiful and so powerful.
don't know - i hear this, i see that woman with her baby at the window - calm calm - belong - the background vocals, michaels voice - i got tears in my eyes... why? it touches me so
I bought this album 2 days after my mother died when I was 15 in 1991. It is one of my go-to albums. I started listening to it again after the death of my grandfather & again when my brother died. It gives me a sense of calm, and of peace within melancholy, I can float on the waves of lyrics & melody and feel like things will get better when I need to feel that way. It's like musical prozac. Definitely one of the best albums ever made. And I love it when things are going great just as much.
@lexaj23 My uncle and I listened to Out of Time everyday together when it came out in 1991. He died last year and this song in particular reminds me of him and the good times we had riding around town, listening to REM. A classic soundtrack of life when things were more simple. Peace.
@themooddisorders I love Automatic For The People for similar reasons, but relating to entirely different experiences. It's hard to put single definitive reason to love these albums into words, but the cumulative effect of the individual tracks of both albums, with such differing sounds from song to song, is that they leave me feeling better than before I heard them.

@lexaj23 Beautiful words just Beautiful and sorry for the losses I myself have lost My Mother and a few friends, the friends mostly due to drugs and glue but one friend drowned who I miss whole heartedly
@lexaj23 my story is, gladly, in no way as moving as yours..but this record made me buy everything they ever did.....but I never did buy this album again after i lost it so many times because I feared it would never move the way it did back then when i was 17...i still wont buy it.. but it's still moving me. take care
I feel ya. I used to fall asleep listening to this CD, drifting off to this dream-like soundtrack. And like you, I lost a best friend tragically in a car wreck when "Everybody Hurts" was released off their next album. It was therapy.

What a beautiful song. we all start off so innocent and free. Only to be ruled controlled by the masses with liberal monkeys grabbing control and beating us over the head with our own morality. God save the children in us all while monkeys destroy the planet.
Funny, most people only know Losing My Religion (and maybe Shiny Happy People) from this album... if only they knew how amazing the rest of the songs were
@jman99999 au contraire, i really enjoyed the GREEN album, so i bought this one and each song is brilliant in its own right, a lot of studio albums are just peppered with a couple of chart hits , this like stevenharris said has gold, silver and platinum all over it.
I just realized I am conflicted. INXS is my favorite band but I am finding out there are many more REM songs I love more than INXS songs. Maybe I am partial to INXS only because Michael Hutchence is sexy as fu**.
JUST BEAUTIFAUL.

@adrolak35 I'm guessing someone threw Out of Time out a car window? What scares me more is that this person is actually allowed to drive.
