  • The most hated song in every music shop, but very musician can play it right with some motivation.

  • spinal tap anyone? these rock gods trying to justify or break down why a riff is a hit, why this riff has endured and become legendary. the pose of intellectual pontification and pondering...

these guys should know, better than anyone:

keep it simple, stupid. it's fucking Rock and Roll!!!

  • smoke on the water is a rendition the 5th symphony of beethoven theme 'upside down' - play it backward for confirmation

  • was that guy in the studio that news of the world editor i cant remember his name but hes always on sky news anyway looks like a younger version of him lol

  • Ritchie looks stupid with that moustache! he should shave it off!

  • @ 0:31 is absolutely true

  • Yeah, too bad that smoke on the water riff isn't theirs....so it does sound like something else.

  • Blackmore, Townsend ,Gilmour, and Page.

Four of the greatest men in Rock forever.

  • pete townshend says:something simple and great..thats smoke on the water =)

  • Ritchie Blackmore is a guitar genius!!

  • DP they are so professional ....thank you all ..!

  • LET FREEDOM RING WITH THE SHOTGUN BLAST!!!!!!!!!

  • looks like an italian dickhead to me, but a great guitarist really awesome.

  • Technically speaking the riff of smoke on the water is not a strict inversion of Beethoven's Fifth....it may have inspired Blackmoore but the chromatic touch has nothing to do with the Fifth.

  • Why didn't they discus lazy.

  • or it is Rainbow- Man Of The Silver Mountain... they have almost the same intro =)

  • ah nvm i found it :)it seemed so familiar lol :)) it's Rainbow- All Night Long

  • what is the song richie plays at the beginning of the video?

  • @FistMad Are you serious????? It is Smoke on the Water which is on the album Machine Head:)

  • @turockandar nope it isn't :P check out the songs i said and listen:P it doesn't even sound similar to smoke on the watter

  • @FistMad Well I don't know which video you are referring to...the one titled 'Deep Purple- Machine Head (Classic Album) with Richie on an acoustic does start with smoke on the water with one bass note added...which vid are you speaking about?

  • @turockandar i am talking about this vid, it doesn't start with smoke on the watter :) just check out richie's band Rainbow the song called All Night Long:P this video starts with that song

  • @FistMad Yeah, dude! That's "Smoke on the Water"........why the hell else are they talking about "Smoke on the Water"??

  • @cripplecog dude try listening not being logical... did u even try to listen to the song i said? :| and it doesn't even sound close to smoke on the water....

  • Smoke on the water its only 4 notes...

SO FUCKING WHAT?? Child in Time its even less, and its even more amazing...

  • @ordepcbmt Actually it's seven.

  • dam amazing album....blackmore rocks...

  • TAKE OUT THE COMMERCIALS!!!!

  • yeah, the kid in the guitar shop, you hear a NNNNNAAAAHHHH NAAAAHHHHH NAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH NANA NA NA,and then yeah,i will buy this guitar, then he launch into the sweet child of mine riff

  • Blackmore is such a great guitarist. Man , who's better?

  • @jajones1952 Nobody is able to reach Blackmore. And when I hear modern music I expect that nobody will ever reach him.

  • @jajones1952 alot of people

  • Blackmore - Top Gun!!!

  • Comment removed

  • why is there always an idiot who has to dislike a great video like this?

  • @basssorc may be Jimmy Page?? ))))

  • RITCHIE BLACKMORE - GUITAR GOD

  • The whole universe and all in it is not only based on simplicity, it IS simplicity!

Simplicity remains the hardest thing to achieve in all things, so why is called Simple?

  • I saw the entire episode. Wonderful, made me want to buy Machine Head, just bought it.

I like how John Lord looks like Sean Connery.

  • More ppl should watch this before arguing about "how it's played". (Ritchie can't get it wrong after all!)

As for the debate about 4th's & 5th's - it is actually played as perfect 4th intervals (NOT chords), but a perfect 4th is also an inverted perfect 5th. The first interval consists of a G & a D. If G were the lowest note, it would be a 5th:

    G-A-Bb-C-D

However G is played an octave higher, this giving the 4th interval:

    D-Eb-F-G.

    Same two notes though: G & D.

  • This is the first video I've ever seen of RB talking, thanks.

No question that "Smoke" is the most recognizable riff of all time.

  • Great Blackmore!

  • 00:00

  • R,Blackmore: I belong to you!! thanks for being the biggest guitar player & composer I´ve never known. thanks for give us so many greatest songs for history. I love you master!!

  • smoke on the water is the worst song on machine head

  • @cooliovasquez

There is NO worst song on Machine Head, they are all brilliant, it's just that " Smoke " is not quite as brilliant as the rest.

And yet it's the most well known song from the album.

  • @QueenReigns1 this whole video should be about space truckin

  • @cooliovasquez

    What a retarded comment.

  • @QueenReigns1 why? they made the whole video about one song anyway might as well do it on a more impressive and memorable one. What a retarded video.

  • @cooliovasquez

The whole video about 1 song?

For one thing it's not a video, and to say that you can't have watched it.

My only criticism of the DVD..not Video...is that they failed to even mention..Lazy !

  • richie, god, whatever...he is you know that

  • the only thing I know is that Machine Head is a hell of an album.

  • Ritchie reminds me of an older Matt Bellamy

  • MET RITCHIE 20 YEARS AGO AT THE SOCCER FIELD WHERE HE MET HIS NOW HOT WIFE CANDACE KNIGHT. HE SIGNED MY "MACHINE HEAD" CASSETTE TAPE AND WAS A CLASS ACT. SO FUCK OFF TO ALL THE NEIGHSAYERS ABOUT HIM BEING AN ASSHOLE

  • it's funny how everybody who plays guitar plays the riff in 5ths (power chords) when it's actually in 4ths. Then you can mix the riff from Dire Straits Money for Nothing to it because it's right there and blends nice. i love doing that for people. They all point and go ; "hey! Yeah! Ha Ha.. BTW. This riff is stolen from Iggy and the Stooges' TV Eye who stole it from the Mc5. Kick out the Jams Mutha Fuckers!!!

  • Ritchie has has major respect for his fans! He's just an incredibly shy man believe it or not. I met him in Lumley castle UK in 2001 and he was an absolute gentleman. He stood up shook my hand. I even got 2 invites to 2 further nights.

It's all part of the image man. That's why everyone is obsessed by him.

  • Machine Head has always been one of my favorite albums although I was dissappointed when they didn't discuss Lazy possibly the best song on the album.

  • BLACKMORE IS GOD!!!

  • @krevice definitivamente....!

  • The last time he played it num nuts!!

  • Well Ritchie, you certainly 'Didn't take the audience with' as Pete advised you, because you've been an arrogant prat to your fans. Fans have made you famous and rich so show some appreciation.

  • @5150VanAlien

thats a bit strong mate Ritchie gave up playing Rock music some 15 years ago when he was over 50 years old he had already given the rock world an unrivalled back catalogue of Hard Rock brilliance and has earned the right to play whatever type of music he wants to!! as a long time fan of the mans music i dont feel he owes me anything he has already written much of the soundtrack to my life and i for one have never left a Blackmore concert dissapointed !

  • RB is a talented musician however, what you've described is him merely doing his job re: creating the soundtrack to your life. My argument is that I have never heard him thank his fans. Without fans bands don't exist!!! Whilst fans have shown appreciation to RB and made him rich, he has not reciprocated this thanks and that's why he's an arrogant prat. KISS', moto is "THE FANS, THE FANS, THE FANS" That's why Paul Stanley asks the crowd at concerts "Are you happy with tonight's show"

  • @5150VanAlien

Paul Stanley is the lead singer of Kiss so has the microphone to say whatever he wants to to the fans! Ritchie Blackmore has always been the lead guitarist in any of his bands and left the lead singers to address the crowd as do 99.9% of all bands!! Having seen Ritchie in recent years in Blackmores Night he does interact with the fans a lot more than in his rock days and does speak quite often onstage ive even seen him hand out beer to the fans!

  • Irrespective of one's position in the band, this does not restrict them from interacting verbally with the fans (i.e. the band's customers that have made Ritchie filthy rich). If he's now interacting with the crowd and handing out beers as you say, it's nice to see he's FINALLY (after 40 years?) treating his fans with SOME dignity. BTW, Steve Morse wipes the floor with Ritchie, just listen to the guitar work on Sometimes I Feel Like Screaming and how many times it changes key. That's talent.

  • @5150VanAlien

Steve Morse is a fine guitarist and SIFLS is good song but Morses contributions to Purple cant be compared to Blackmores! Morse has basically used the SAME guitar solo on every track on every album he has done with Purple to state that Morse wipes the floor with Blackmore is simply ridiculous have you heard Blackmores work in the 70s with Purple and Rainbow?.Ive never met Ritchie so dont know what he is like in real life do you ? his music is all that interests me

  • @lightintheblack Steve Morse has quickly earned the respect of DP fans because he is a fine musician with kindness. In one interview, Blackmore mentioned he was in DP for nostalgia which is a slap in the face if fans. In another interview with Dio, he recalls how when rainbow finished a set in Scotland and fans waited after trains had ceased for the night and blackmore just walked straight passed them...Dio said he could not do that to fans and that's why people respect Dio!!

  • @5150VanAlien

As a Blackers fan of over 35 years i am well aware of his behaviour at times but you what i couldnt care less i love the guys music and guitar playing no one has come close to Blackers as far as playing with pure raw emotion is concerned IMHO Is he a prat in real life? I have no idea ive never met him have you?Was the big bad man in black of the rock era just an image? who knows ?As for fans waiting back to meet stars etc ive never seen the point bit sad if you ask me

  • @lightintheblack exactly right blackmore is a awesome musician i never had the chance to meet Mr.Blackmore personally but all i can say from video interviews that he is a gentlemen and a bit shy and mystic person i remember when dio said in an interview that richie and dio were very very deep into superstitiou things like wichtes and dark magic and dragons and knights and castles spirits and whatever the middle ages could offer.or maybe his roots he is half a gipsy and english citizen i guess

  • @aphasia1972 Dio also said Blackmore was a ass-hole

  • @blackdogleg does he?? i dont think so surely dio and blackmore were two big egos and thats poison for a rockband Rainbow was richies band he founded the band in 1975 sure in a free world there is democracy but he was the Boss i know that Dio and blackmore later had very big different ideas for songwriting dio more into medievil rock and blackmore changed his mind into AOR Rock so that means normaly MONEY making music DIO was my alltime fav singer and imagine if blackmore wouldnt fired dio

  • @aphasia1972 Yes, he said it shortly before he died, on That Heavy Metal Show VH1.

And to be an artist a person needs an ego, it is just that Blackmore took it to an entirely different level.

  • I need this DVD......

  • what is name of song in the begining

  • @siky595 LOL ARE YOU SERIOUS!? it's fucking "Smoke on the water! I can't believe you don't know! and lol he even said it dozens of times man!

  • So which way it correct? The first time he played it, or the second? Or are both correct?

  • It is a variation on "I am free" of the Who.

  • poor ritchie must get extremely pissed off hearing hundreds of people playing this with bloody powerchords

  • Ritchie looks awesome with a moustache.

  • ritchie blackmore is a god

  • Anyone know where i can learn this song on the guitar????

  • @1p00nuh4rd68 wtf do you think buddy is playing here the drums ???

  • @1p00nuh4rd68

Yea, in your bedroom...and keep the noise down !!

  • God bless 'em (And I DO like Deep Purple)...but isn't that a real "Spinal Tap" moment? Pure joy.

  • It's a Blues!!!

  • I was living in Augsburg Germany in 73 and this whole album was still very, very popular at the time. I'll never forget the first time I heard SOW! By today's standard it's hard for young people to understand what an impact that song and that album had on music-as so much water has flowed under the bridge since then. It was magical living in Germany at the time-as music in general was just exploding in a beautiful way! So many now Classic bands were just starting at the time The best of my life!

  • I find this so funny because that was the first riff i ever learned and played on the guitar (by ear) and played it the same way blackmore does. then i went to different TAB sites and there were people tabbin this song with 5ths, but i always thought it sounded way better and was easier with the 2 note barre chords..... HAH!

  • don't try to learn guitar from...tab..thats a crutch for people who have no desire to sit down and learn to play the instrument

  • richie! tocala bien!!!!

  • gods

  • I GOT IT ON DVD

  • @JaffahProductions

So have I..and I wanna know why Lazy is not even mentioned it !!!

  • me too!

  • what makes you think Blackers disliked Townshend? As far as i can gather they were quite friendly during the 70s

  • @lightintheblack

really because i heard blackmore slag Townshend off..

  • @GrungeRocker1000

Really? havent heard of that when was this? from what i have heard they were quite friendly and Pete actually used to give Ritchie advice on various matters but hey who knows??

  • @lightintheblack Blacks? Racist

  • @LlNUXPYTHON

what are you on about mate??? Blackers is well known as a nickname for Ritchie Blackmore his bandmates in Deep Purple used to call him Blackers

  • @lightintheblack Pete Townshend has wrote so many kickass songs with the who and was the first guy to implement the notion of a rock opera for the masses. The WHO was very successful from the late 60's through the early '80s. As a performer during that time you would have to be a complete moron to not appreciate any advice you could get from Townshend regarding what made him successful. Besides , pete is very cool too.

  • @chillichomper

Pete Townshend is a genius I lam very well aware of and love his work and The Who I have seen them several times but unfortunately not before Keith Moon died my first Who gig was in 1980 and Kenney Jones was on drums .Im not sure why you are telling me this mate??What i will say though is that Pete is a great songwriter but as a guitarist Pete couldnt touch Blackmore

  • @lightintheblack I totally agree with that comment. Cheers.

  • wheres pt2 ?
