Tony is so little...skinny. It was a year or so later I saw him, Mike McGill (sp?) and a few others at Wind, Waves and Wheels in Rockford, MI for the Bones Brigade Tour...I was awestruck and went away feeling not so inspired, but feeble...then again I was a mere thirteen years old...here, I am turning 39 and still am in awe of their skills at that time. I can't remember if Rodney was there or maybe it was Per...anyone out there know?
LOL... Hawk had copers and a bird on his deck... Talk about OLD SCHOOL. And for those who don't know, copers were those plastic guards you put over your truck bottoms so you could grind easier (for pussies), and a bird was that plastic thing you put on your back truck to you wouldn't hang up on ramps (again for pussies). I haven't seen that shit in over 25 years.... LOL...
@EStrong There were lots of 'crete parks that wouldn't let you ride without copers because they wanted to protect the lips. They made some things harder because you didn't get enough bite in pivots. I never bothered, but I did used to use a Cell Block because I liked deep 'caves and tended to snap decks just in front of the back truck. The Cell Block helped to bridge over that weak spot a bit.
@interphase Ahhh, truly spoken. I never had a chance to ride in any of the "old school" crete parks circa 70's and 80's, we just had halfpipes that we built and some of the few public ramps in the late 80's early 90's. First ones had PVC pipe cut in half and screwed to the lip, then they figured out whole pipe on the lip that eventually went to steel. Ramps started becoming "lip trick" friendly and dudes were grinding and board sliding 10 feet plus easy.
@interphase and.... Why I said "for pussies". The only dudes I saw use copers used them on street because they couldn't slappy grind or grind at all and the only way they could grind was with copers. Either that or they were too scared to "scratch" their trucks. LOL... My favs, Indy 169's for street and ramp and pool. Anywho, I'm almost 42 and still "session" once in a blue moon. Awesome shit, glad to see it's still alive.
@EStrong My indys are ground through to the axle, and are still bolted to an original Schmitt Chris MIller with Sims Nitro wheels :). The only time I put copers on it was for one session at a new crete park where you wouldn't get in otherwise, but it turned out to be crap because they'd kinked the base of the transitions too far, so I gave them away to someone wanting to get in and we went street skating instead :) It was a good time to be a skater :)
@interphase Yes it was, great time to be a skater. My indys are on one of my original Lance Mountain decks, pre "bonite" days. LOL... Shit, I still have 3 of those, 2 McGills and a few Alvas laying around. The looks I get when I pull one of those out at a park or ramp these days. LOL... Be well man!
me encata el rescatado videaco "bones brigade" sobretodo en esta parte donde en el minuto 1:10 el buen samaritano señor de las palomas parece tener buen royito kon las palomas.xDD
That building where lances sequence starts out (in downtown l.a.) is such a bust, the security is on their way out as soon as they see skateboards. as with all the cool spots in that area of town. Still gotta go for it though, they act like they've told you SO many times.
The song for Lance's part @1:57 is my most quinti-essential skate tune. every time i ride my skateboard ,for the last 20+ years, that song will play in my head for a moment. every time.
80´s...good times! Times of Christian Hosoi and Natas Kaupas, my 2 favourites American skaters in that time. Too, In that time, here in Brazil we had god skaters, like Rui Muleque, beto or die (my favourite brazilian shape- by lifestyle), fernandinho batman, Cupim, Mureta, Alexandre Ribeiro, Sérgio negrão, tron and others. Too, I remember that I had a shape of rob roskop (my favourite), trucks tracker (I dreamed of having a Gullwing) and santa cruz's wheels. (U.S. products were expensive)
It's natural that the Americans elect an American, and of course, that a Brazilian say "Bob!". I remember the Rodney Mullen, in the 80s, as the king of the freestyle mode and Tony Hawk in vertical. But, to elect the best of all, I think we have to see who was the best overall (freestyle, street, vert ramp and mega). Mullen is the king on the ground and I think in vert, is Bob. Perhaps, by the history of the skateboard, Tony Hawk is the best in general?...

80's... In that time, here in Brazil, we only watching on tv, Hosoi and Hawk disputing the hegemony of the global skateboarding, and dreaming to see, in a day, a Brazilian skater in this place. The time has passed and the dream became a reality ... Bob Burnquist, Sandro Dias, among many others at the top of the world skating! What a pride! (we can not forget about the older Brazilians skaters that are part of this, too)

The Kings...
soccer = Pelé, basketball = Michael Jordan, tenis = Roger Federer, surfboarding = kelly Slater, skateboarding = Tony Hawk or Bob Burnquist? (For me, is Bob. And for you? Who is the king?)

Hello. I'm from São Paulo-SP, Brazil (the South America's skateboarding capital) and in the 80's I saw the fight between Cristian Hosoi and Tony Hawk for the world hegemony. In that time, sure, we only dreamed, but today, I'm very proud to know that Bob Burnquist is the 'Pelé' (the King) of the skateboarding, like the Brazilian skateboarding is on the top of the world. (unfortuneately it still not happened with the Brazilian surfboarding). PS- Sorry 4 my bad english.
why does everyone call him 'Tony Hawks' with an 's' on the end? Tony Hawk's skateboard on PS2. Thats why. its like mates call my lil sister becks coz when i reffer to her its usually 'becks coming out tonight' - 'becks job....' 'becks feeling rough...' bla bla. haha.
Tony HAWK.... is that better for you!? ha.... I was skating years and years before that game came out, so if you're inferring I'm one of those people who got into dkating via that game you are mistaken my friend!
no, just commenting on how people pronounce him plural. he's worth more than 1 skater i suppose. keep on skating brother, beck is fine. becks is fine to. Beck's fine wine. Becks beer. beck's beer? naaa, my beer.
Guy pushing a couch around on the streets, unusual stuff like this only happened in 80's. Great and fun times.
