And this is why Nine will ALWAYS be my favourite Doctor. He came the closest to being human, gave in to his overpowering emotions and just got angry when he felt angry. He still felt all the hurt and the rage from the Time War, and for that while he thought about how small humans are but just how big they make themselves seem. This angers him at first, but then he realises it becomes such a strength for them. Nine's character is developed the most in New Who, and I adore him.
Even though Eccleston is overlooked in the pantheon of Doctors due to his short run, to me he was the most interesting due to his war veteran mental state. He seemed so unstable and conflicted that his character had great depth. Don't think that this is in anyway a slight on David and Matt. Those guys are genius and deserve all the credit they get.
fun fact: in the comics, the Doctor found a Cyberman who somehow survived having it's emotions turned on. The Cyberman, Kroton, became a companion in the comics.
While Tennant and Smith may sometimes seem sad from the effect of the Time War, you just KNOW that Christopher Eccleston fought in it and was mentally scared from what he did and everything that happened and all that he lost. Surprisingly I love him the most, he's my favourite, he couldn't have opened the show any better. Tennant gets praised for his Doctor a lot, but lets face it, no one could have kicked the door open any better than Christopher to start the series again
I don't see how the writing was top form really I mean no offence but really it was just a start of a long line of dalek episodes over and over again, I think it would have been better if the doctor killed the dalek I know I know " the doctor doesn't kill" but think about it from this point it would show how far he had fallen after the time war
@jamalshookup I don't see how the writing was top form really I mean no offence but really it was just a start of a long line of dalek episodes over and over again, I think it would have been better if the doctor killed the dalek I know I know " the doctor doesn't kill" but think about it from this point it would show how far he had fallen after the time war
@WWalton1996 I think this is, it shows you how dark in terms of killing the doctor can be. He was scared from the Time War and while the Waters of Mars ending was dark, he didn't kill anyone, just thought of himself as a god. Where as here, the Doctor is afraid of the Dalek and at the same time torturing it, this shows how mentally scared from the time war he had become, Chris did a "fantastic" job at bringing that to the Doctor for the new series, I think he's been the best at the dark stuff
This is one of the first episodes of Dr. Who I've ever exposed to, and I was very, very impressed. At first I had no idea why the benign Doctor hated this seemly harmless robot, then the Doctor talk about Dalek wanting the entire race of Human to die because it honestly believes in massacre.
Then I saw the Dalek creature inside the shell. I was mumbling to my friend who introduced me to DW, "But this thing... locking away like that, it's... pathetic...?" Seriously, I felt sorry for it.
As much as I love David Tennant, I think Chris was my favorite modern Doctor. David can definitely reflect the Doctor's emotional scars, but Chris really had the presence of a vengeful and powerful being while remaining rather human. It seems like the recent shows have been playing towards the Doctor's more eccentric side, which is fine, but definitely not the only thing that makes him an interesting character.
Awwww at the little stalk of the Dalek going down when it realises it is all alone. Bless it! and this scene reminds me why the 9th doctor is the "war doctor" that is pure PTSD the doctor has.
Wow, till now Ive only seen season 2 and when I decided to watch it from the beginning I was like omgooood this guy looks like a chavy gangsta, he sucks! Guess what - 5 episodes and Im totally into him! David Tennant? pff...
@macsweene FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK! Can you atleast try to upload more parts of it?
New Doctor Who didn't kick serious ass until this episode. That's when it went from "Eh, decent show" to "Holy shit, this is appointment viewing!" for me.
David Tennant is my favourite Doctor, but Christopher shows the most believable and war ravaged conscience towards the Daleks. You can easily tell there's a long history between them.
"Oh and I caught your little signal, "Help me," poor little thing." His face after this line is perfect: all angsty and vengeful. Eccleston was the BEST as the Doctor!!
@Bladerunner93 having him laugh at and mock his part in the genocide of another creature's species, even if that species is Dalek, goes way beyond unstabled. Davies turned him into the Adolf Hitler of the DW universe, and I couldn't be happier that we've put this part of the franchise's history behind us.
Don't get me wrong, I love the idea of the Doctor becoming corrupted and finally snapping like this, but it should have been alternate universe fiction not bloody canon.
