Nick cave is a creative mastadon! his output over the years is amazing. He tries his hand at all forms of artisitc expression. Does anyone know if he paints?? The guy will go down as a legend in the same breath as dylan and john martyn. AWESOME!!!
This has got to be my favorite song off The Lyre of Orpheus. The sense of urgency and immediacy the song conveys is absolutely sublime. The song even sounds like a river ebbing and flowing, building from soft rifles into a turbulent torrent finally spilling and misting over the edge. One of his best written songs, up there with The Carny, The Mercy Seat, and Do You Love Me (Part 2).
I never liked Nick Cave. Then I heard this genius "O Children" song which blew me away. I got the album and was very anxious to find out what this guy got. It turned out that apart from "O Children" and "Easy Money" this song was the only song really worth listening. The other ones might be good for someone but definitely not for me. Sorry, Nick, still not a fan.
@kustomkure i recently found this album and feel quite the opposite -- each song beautifully shifts and evokes the style and grace that this one so effortlessly hits. give it another listen, i'm sure you'll find another you like [I suggest "Spell", which is right before this track on Lyre of Orpheus] that hits the same height as this one.
btw, i can't believe i hadn't heard these albums before. inspiring stuff, i've had it on repeat for days.
@legendaryconguerist I hear you. But still the other songs are dead to me and I can tell you why. While the three best ones have that trip-hop flavor to it, they move slowly and effortlessly and sound deep and touching, all the other songs have some kind of a rockabilly flavor to them. It's like those 90' songs of him with PJ Harvey and Kylie Minogue which I still hate with all my heart. We all are different, I am just saying that maybe they really are good, but not for me.
@rmsturges247 I know opinions differ, and what you like is a matter of opinion, but the day Justin Beiber gains even the slightest bit of talent I will eat my collection of hats. And I have many.
hahahaahhahhahahhahahahahahhahahahahahahahahahhahahahahahahahahahhaahahahahahahhahahahahahahhahahahahahahahahhahahahaha...justin biber / lady gagga / all the mtv bullshit XD
When I DJed at WRAS-Atlanta, this was one of my favorite tracks off this double disc when it was in rotation. Absolutely beautiful. I have spent hours listening closely to the orchestral arrangements, especially the frenetic piano playing.

This is the best album they've done after Blixa left. And I love how he implements back up singers throughout the album. Beautiful song.

@jvpanameno Best since Mick left, too. Never gave Abbatoir Blues a proper listen, though.
