I used a gear brush for the gears in the beginning, and the rest are just homemade. I will sometimes just make an irregular shape that I think will mimic a brush well. Lately I've been into triangular and rectangular shaped brushes, with a texture turned on. The texture I usually use is just a gray fill with an "add noise" filter set to it.

The brush I really use the most, however, is just a flattened square brush. It gets the job done.
