  • Cool

  • i did it . it is real. thanks i vote for 1 point

  • We found the exact same tinsel, and got the right length of pipe, but whenever we try to do the experiment the tinsel just locks on to the pipe... it doesn't repel! What are we doing wrong!?

  • @brandy082783

try to give the pipe more charge cause if the pipe has less charge than the tinsel it will attract the static field giving an electric discharge (geeky for me to say i know) and stick to the pipe. but if both the pipe and the tinsel have the same charge it will then repel the pipe and start floating. if that doesn't work, at least you can still use a leaf blower in a room full of tinsel then it'd be more fun!

  • @067messenger LOL thanks for the advise! Unfortunately, the school wouldn't accept the leaf blower idea for my daughters science project... HOWEVER we did figure out that there was dust in the pipe and it was keeping the pipe from holding the charge. Once we thoroughly washed and dried it, it worked wonderfully!

  • COOL BEANS!

  • Hey MR. Sciencebob are you selling the PVC pipe too?? Cause I want to buy the Tinsel from u, but I was wondering if u wer selling the pipes???

  • dang ur so asome i cant wait to do this ur so asome ill sub u plz acept ma freind request

  • its a nice dry day here too butt i'm bald :'(

  • Love, love, love this Bob!!!! Can't wait to have my daughter do this in homeschool!! You ROCK! I suspect you will be my new fave you tube channel--and plan to zippeedoo on over to you website! Thank you!

  • @paintingstars Thanks! Have fun with the experiments. Let us know how they go.

  • @ScienceBob hey i get very bored on the weekends is there any chances you could post more science experiments??

  • You know they're selling these now, for like, $14.95

  • im lucky i have tons of pvc pipe cuz my dads an electrition

  • what if i were to possibly (i dont know how) but to arrage the tinsel in a plane kind of way so that when it touches the PVC piping it forms in that position and fly forward? i dont know if it will work or not

  • Cool

  • Comment removed

  • It uh worked!

  • You said I would just need PVC pipe and the tinsel, you said nothing about me needing hair! Your awesome!!

  • wow the google transcribe audio really sucks it only understands a few words

  • luckily i just found some random piece of PVC pipe on the floor around a construction area and its perfect but i dont have mylar tinsel

  • this is the same principal used by the military for antigravity vehicles...

    called ufo's by ignorant people...

except they use an extremely high voltage frequency charge created by a mercury vortex.

    same thing though.

  • Pause at 1:37 hahahaha

  • it well work in thread?

  • It has to be in a cold area and dry I believe or else it won't work, I find that it does not work when it is raining out.

  • on your website does the levitating orb kit come with the pvc pipe or only with the tinsel

  • What if you don't have any tinsel?

  • Can this work with a plastic pen or something in that category?

  • Isn't there an info-mercial for this, but it costs like $15, that's a $14.20 or more profit per order! Lol, nice vid.

  • OMG IT WORKS!

earlier today i tried it while it was raining and it didn't work.

i was sad, so later tonight i tried it when the rain stopped and it did exactly what his did!

    it bounced and floated!!

so cool, and fun. HOURS of entertainment!

  • I was tolled a straw works just as well as a PVC pipe

  • 1:37 epic face

  • wow 80 cents? wandarama is milking those kids out there

  • ugh the tinsel i have curls up so i cant tie the knots and i dont know how to straighten it help?

  • Why is the pvc pipe required? Instead of the pvc, why not just use any object, like my hand or a branch? And what kind of elements is the tinsel made of? Could you make a larger more powerful presentation? Could you levitate a small plant in an orb safely and accessibly? Or levitate water?

  • @namenamename27 The materials in PVC pipes attract and hold a static charge better than most other easily available materials (balloons work well for this experiment too) T static charge only has so much power and it is only able to repel very lightweight objects. I hope that helps.

  • @ScienceBob Absolutely, and thank you so much!

  • @ScienceBob what about a dropllet of oil?Its a "Lightweight object",right?

  • Hi sciencemagician. Chances are the Mylar you are using is too thick. See if you can find some Mylar that is thinner and give it another try. Let me know how it works out.

  • @ScienceBob

Awe man, I should have done this for the kids at the Christmas party tonight! :( Oh well, next year I will :) Thanks for the great video kind sir.

  • Hello.

I cut mylar gift wrapper into thin strips since I cannot find mylar tinsel here. The mylar strips cling to the pvc rod instead of forming a ball shape and float. What could I do wrong? Thanks.

  • 1.21 JIGGAWATTS?!

  • can you use tin foil

  • can you use something else instead of tinsel?thanks

  • I love it when he's scratching his head and his face looks so funny... Sciene bob is the best!

  • Epic...

  • Will use this when its near Xmas time ..

  • Wow i came here looking for stevespangler. Fail

  • AND THEY SAID YOU HAVE TO PAY $20 FOR A STUPID WAND AND TINSEL THING

  • Looks like a wandarama.....

  • Pause the video at 1:37 and look at sciencebob lol

  • You can also use a balloon to

  • i am really interested in your videos science bob. haha, imma soo try some of these one day. :D

  • isnt that like the wand-o-rama? COOL! ITS CHEAPER!

  • Oh it works^^A friend of mine got a manufactured one as a advertisinggift

  • Oh it works^^A friend of mine got a manufactured one as a advertisinggift

  • I do this every Christmas .. Works awesome

  • Wow this is ameazing.

  • I don't have any piece of PVC pipe that is about an inch or two and a half millimeters wide and about two feet or sixty centimeters long : <

  • what kind of tinsel do you need?

  • i want to but i have no tinsel or pipe

  • uh.. why do you need to order tincil? im sure that even tho its not christmas any art store should have the stuff

  • WHAT HAS SCIENCE DONE!!!!

  • i already have tools i got them long time ago i didnt even know about this until now

  • did you guys try tin foil?? it worked with me

  • @dgoakes When I use tin foil it gets stuck to my pvc pipe? How did you get it to work?

  • uhmm, what if i order it right now and i need it by sunday , how long will it take to ship it over / get the tinsel?

  • Is it Tinsel?

  • w00t haws0me

  • you can also use ribin cat thinly

  • my mylar gets stuck to my pvc pipe..HELPP!!!!

  • did you rub it to create static electricity

  • @studio463 it needs more charge

  • "but its not magic, its science" i think it will ruin the magic for the kids xD

  • lol true

  • @beamfortress But science is magic xD

  • someone knows any other material that can substitute te mylar, because i live in brasil and i've never seen that here!

  • omg 1:44 looks so cool when it starts flying :)

  • music is great :D

  • gotta love static! i am looking to build a van de graaff generator pretty soon here, i wanna see if i can use it at work to attract all the bondo dust (i work in a bodyshop)

  • uhh.. its so hard to have that kind of materials especially me because i live in other country ..

are you still selling that kind of materials through the philippines ?? because i really wanted that to be my science project because its so cool xDD!!

  • i have very very very thin tinsel but i cant get it to bounce

  • to bad it doesnt work. ive tried like 20 times

  • Hey Mickey,

Check below for advice - you probably need thinner tinsel - have fun & good luck!

  • @mickeymouseears It does... You have to be in a dry area

  • @mickeymouseears It does work, gotta be in a humid area and not to much moisture.

  • @dylanfleck humid means moist, you tit...you mean arid.

  • This is amazing!

  • Does not work, Constantly sticks to the PVC pipe. Does not levitate. Followed instructions and have the exact parts and specs. The only reason I can attribute it to not working is the reason that the humidity in this area is too high. I get a good static charge on the PVC yet the tinsel still continues to stick. Do you have to somehow charge the tinsel too?

  • Hi Pnther1,

Usually when it does not work it is the tinsel, most tinsel available is too thick or wide. You may want to try using wool to charge the PVC pipe. As you mentioned, humidity can also reduce static charges. Search "Levitating Orb" to see others on YouTube that have had success. Best of luck!

  • i tried it, maby im doin somethin wrong but it just dosent work.

  • on the web site you can buy all of the things for one doller

  • cooooool im so doing that

  • how long will it float?

  • i think it'll float as long as it in the air

  • That's cool. Good job on the charismatic science!

  • Nice.

  • So cool. Just bought some tinsel.

  • awsome:D

  • cooool!!

  • He doesn't look like a NERD

  • you look kinda like indy mogul

  • so sad I found out about this AFTER I bought a funfly stick

  • Look at his Zombie Act at 1:38

    LOL

  • Can I use something other than tinel?

  • @Kasu324 try tinsel, tinel doesnt exsist.

  • I'de of loved to have you as a science teacher, you're awesome

  • cool

  • u could do with ruler too

then wat is that thing that mylar tensel?

  • The tinsel might cost about 80 cents but how much does the PVC pipe cost

  • i bought one it was 1 dollar lol

  • i couldn't get it to work i had all the right materials but the tinsel just wouldn't get a negative charge i must have tried 20 times but it was still sticking to the pipe. I dont know why it didn't work.

  • wow cool!!!!

  • that cool thank

  • I have a video of that =) just the floating

(i ordered some of the tinsel from ScienceBob himself) most def. goin to my school Science Fair

  • i cant do it at all

    im trying realy hard

i cant get it to float

  • Hi Science Bob,

I tryed that usisng a red Mylar but did not works. Does the color influenciate, the silver color makes the mylar a conductor? thanks

  • Most of the tinsel out there is too wide or too heavy to float. You will need tinsel that is really, really thin - about 1 mm wide. If you have trouble finding it, you can get some on the site.

  • im glad i found this cause i was thinking about getting a static wand the comes with mylar shapes to do this but it costs $26.

  • im making it for my science fair project!^^

  • its a nice experiment! im teaching it to some second graders :)

  • i have a question: how does it work?

  • were can i get mylarn but not online

  • emergency blanket or mylar ballons at wally world

  • I have not gotten the mylar in balloons to work, even when I cut it really thin, but if you can get it to work, let me know!

    -Science Bob

  • I tried balloons too wih no luck : (

  • That is so very, very cool! If you liked that, I'm sure you'll like this too: "Real levitation I kid you not" A guy levitates a balloon. Really weird.

  • cool

  • Be sure to use really thin mylar tinsel (about 1 millimeter wide) or the orb may be too heavy to levitate. If you can't find PVC pipe, you can use a regular balloon instead. Have fun!

  • sweeeeet! =)
