The two bands aren't really trying to achieve the same thing/sound/goal, that's why they don't need comparing, they are both to be enjoyed for what they are. Tool are intricate, ordered and technical, with cryptic thematic lyrics. Deftones music is more about feel and has spontaneous and very visual lyrics that don't lead you down a fixed narrative.
