Both sides of van halen are awesome. Sammy just has a raspy sounding voice so it sounds good. DLR puts on a good show and has a wide vocal range. As far as I know they are both good set ups. To bad DLR is old, Van Halens new album isn't as good as this one but whatever right?

Eddie and Alex are the reasons people have come and gone plain and simple. I have been a fan since 1980 and I liked DLR but I thought things got so much better when Sammy Joined. I personally think the muisc expanded and of course their commercial success with Sammy can't be denied. It so overpowered where they were with David. Few people don't realize how much time band members at this level have to spend together. They do get sick of one another and creative differences do rise.
The one thing I hate about this stupid debate is due to the insults that are thrown Sammy's way due to people loving DLR. I love VH with DLR also as that's what I listened to in college.
Sammy is a great frontman in his own right though as many here are too young to remember Montrose, but I saw Montrose several times in person and they were great! Sammy was great back then singing "Rock Candy" and "Rock the Nation".
Anyone who never saw Sammy's Cabo Wabo tour missed a great show!
Also Sammy is a great guy as I met him at his club in Cabo San Lucas as he will sit and drink with you as he's very down to earth. There is a reason why DLR is the only member without the last name Van Halen in the band today.
Eddie is a great guitarist, but he became an alcoholic asshole too. Michael Anthony is with Sammy now for a reason and he's become best friends with Sammy.
@FloraBama TRUE STORY: at a 1992 concert in Omaha, my brother threw a wrist bracelet onstage at Sammy's feet honoring the MIA Vietnam Vets. Sammy picked it up, looked at it and put it on his wrist. And he didn't take it off! When the concert ended, it was still on his wrist!!! Have all the Roth era albums and luv 'em!!! But the Sammy era will always be my personal favorite. My only gripe about the current tour is that I wish it included Mike on bass.
Cool story! Thanks for sharing. I have just always loved Sammy's style and presence as he comes off as very cool and down to earth and when you meet him he is just that. I loved his cabo Wabo tour as it was just too cool. Between most songs he would take a moment and chat with someone in the crowd or the whole crowd while a beautiful sexy young lady would walk out in a tiny bikini bringing him another drink.

The stunning background singing of Michael Anthony is such an integral part of the MUCH-LOVED, classic VH sound!!! Some say he is just an average bass-player, but they are missing the point. It was his vocal participation in VH that made him special and unique. Back in '88, Sammy was still skinny and Eddie hadn't been ravaged by alcoholism yet. Awesome song and video.

This is a great song.. the problem with it is that it doesn't sound like Van Halen. It sounds more like Foreigner or Journey or something. Van Halen with Roth were a raw, hard hitting hard rock band with a really tight groove. Van Hagar had a really polished, mainstream kinda sound. That, and Sammy is so.. goofy. DLR was the shit back in the late 70s/80s. He'd fuck your girlfriend, and you wouldn't care. Sammy just seems like a bit of a bellend. Having said that, I still love both eras.
I hate this Sammy vs DLR crap! Honestly I am a huge Sammy fan as I love his style, but I also liked DLR. Personally I liked VH better with Sammy. Eddie is great, but also an alcoholic jerk too. That's why Sammy left and Michael Anthony went with him as Sammy is a great guy. If you never went to a show on Sammy's Cabo Wabo tour you missed a great show. I still like VH though. I have loved Sammy since his Montrose days!
@FloraBama i think you have to look at the musical style of both Vocalists, when Sammy was there, the music was far more melodic with a softer edge, where as when Dave was there, it was far more raw, Listen to VH1, when Eddie does a solo, he doesn't even do a backing for the solo, just from Rhythm to lead in one swoop, One band, two eras, two types of music, both done well, now who else could pull that off so well?
Well like they say the proof is in the pudding. They never ever had a No. 1 LP with DLR, but almost every LP with Sammy went to No. 1 and they had twice as many No. 1 hits with Sammy.
Also DLR has never done a damn thing without Van Halen, huh? Sammy has had great success as a solo artist and with Montrose in the early years. Sammy is also a very successful businessman with his Cabo Wabo merchandise.

California Girls, Yankee Rose, so many others Goin Crazy i dont know much about his solo stuff but some of its really good im only 13 im not that big of a Hagar fan and ur right Hagar did have alot of no. 1 hits back in the day but same for DLR had a lot of no. 1 hits when he was in VH lets just put it this way DLR and SH are both eqaul its hard to say whos better

I have always hated the debate, because I like both DLR and Hagar. I would LOVE to see a tour with Van Halen with DLR and Sammy and Michaels new band Chickenhawk on the same bill. All 4 studio albums during the Hagar era went to No. 1! They had 17 songs during the Hagar era that went to No. 1 on the billboard charts.

Lol Then on "That Metal Show" I heard that the bassist was "dissed" so if not 4 Sammy Hagar, I wouldn't recognize who is N the band unless the sound distinction of the guitar style. This is a great song.. the problem with it is that it doesn't sound like Van Halen. It sounds more like Foreigner or Journey or something. Van Halen with Roth were a raw, hard hitting hard rock band with a really tight groove. Van Hagar had a really polished, mainstream kinda sound. That, and Sammy is so.. goofy. DLR was the shit back in the late 70s/80s. He'd fuck your girlfriend, and you wouldn't care. Sammy just seems like a bit of a bellend. Having said that, I still love both eras.

I hate this Sammy vs DLR crap! Honestly I am a huge Sammy fan as I love his style, but I also liked DLR. Personally I liked VH better with Sammy. Eddie is great, but also an alcoholic jerk too. That's why Sammy left and Michael Anthony went with him as Sammy is a great guy. If you never went to a show on Sammy's Cabo Wabo tour you missed a great show. I still like VH though. I have loved Sammy since his Montrose days!

@FloraBama i think you have to look at the musical style of both Vocalists, when Sammy was there, the music was far more melodic with a softer edge, where as when Dave was there, it was far more raw, Listen to VH1, when Eddie does a solo, he doesn't even do a backing for the solo, just from Rhythm to lead in one swoop, One band, two eras, two types of music, both done well, now who else could pull that off so well?

Well like they say the proof is in the pudding. They never ever had a No. 1 LP with DLR, but almost every LP with Sammy went to No. 1 and they had twice as many No. 1 hits with Sammy.
Also DLR has never done a damn thing without Van Halen, huh? Sammy has had great success as a solo artist and with Montrose in the early years. Sammy is also a very successful businessman with his Cabo Wabo merchandise.
What have you ever heard DLR do outside of Van Halen?

hey dont forget about DLR solo stuff that had some great success back in the day. California Girls, Yankee Rose, so many others Goin Crazy i dont know much about his solo stuff but some of its really good im only 13 im not that big of a Hagar fan and ur right Hagar did have alot of no. 1 hits back in the day but same for DLR had a lot of no. 1 hits when he was in VH lets just put it this way DLR and SH are both eqaul its hard to say whos better

@ccdeweese ***True, but don't forget to mention that VH released SIX studio albums with Roth (I'm not including ADKOT - which just came out) and VH released FOUR albums with Hagar, so the extra 2 albums helps push up the Roth numbers. But yes, "VAN HALEN I" and "1984" are the 2 biggest selling VH albums of all time.

I have always hated the debate, because I like both DLR and Hagar. I would LOVE to see a tour with Van Halen with DLR and Sammy and Michaels new band Chickenhawk on the same bill. All 4 studio albums during the Hagar era went to No. 1! They had 17 songs during the Hagar era that went to No. 1 on the billboard charts.

The 1984 album w/ Roth was at #2 for a long time, but couldn't break thru to #1 becuz of Jackson's "Thriller." So if 1984 hadn't been competing with the biggest selling album of all time, 1984 DEFINETELY would have went to #1. That would have given VH 5 straight NUMBER ONE albums.

I must confess one thing i been a fan fan of van halen, since fair warning came out in 1981,and to me the one and only frontman of van halen is David Lee Roth,and the music he made with van halen during his period with the band.I never liked the music sammy hagar made with van halen,to me the real van halen is when Diamond Dave is the frontman.And the music he has made with van halen and hopefully will make more music with van halen.

I grew up N the dark side of metal, not having MTV as a teen!! So I always thought the bass player 4 Van Halen was "Van Halen!!" Lol Then on "That Metal Show" I heard that the bassist was "dissed" so if not 4 Sammy Hagar, I wouldn't recognize who is N the band unless the sound distinction of the guitar style. Some riffs from VH did reach the same octives as used by Randy Rhodes "Suicide solution" [OZZY/Randy Rhodes tribute version with guitar solo]

What onlyafterdarkness said. IMO Sammy is way better lyrically, vocally and professionally. He's about the music and is a natural entertainer. DLR is more of an entertainer and has good pipes. Dont get me wrong, I still like DLR and love the stuff he did with Van halen. But Sammy just fits more.

Great song hard to believe they aren't still together. It made no sense they aren't but that's life. We all choose roads to go down and in Van Halen's case today, they are going backwards with DLR. Sammy was the best replacement after David's ego got the best of him, hands down a much better singer and song writer. The newest song Tattoo is a joke!
