I absolutely hate the costumes.. they are so.. i can't even find the words.. I have never seen anything so horrid in my life, poor Jane Austen must be turning in her grave.

I liked this version, its a bit Tim Burton, the costumes, eegads those poke bonnets...but it inspired me to read the book and that's a good thing..let's remember people, this is 1986!!

I think I would've thought it terrible too but I adore peter firth and that fact alone just makes me love this adaptation.

There is something rather surreal about this film which I quite like, whatever all the Austen purists moan about.

@hammertapping Austen was NOT a romantic, she was a person whose personal situation led

her to be able to write a satircal and rather communistic view of relationships. Nevertheless we

need to see that she could only write about her own social statisical basis. Austen did not recognise

the " servants" nor their problems or indeed their existence, her entire energy was directed towards

the " pounds per year". Happy endings were sterling. !!!

ugh, this is one of my favorite stories of Jane Austen's but, the acting portrayal of John Thorpe is very creepy!
