i once beat the game in 6 months gametime, on the hardest difficulty. on the VERY FIRST DAY, a very large ufo flew over my base and landed next to it. i sent 8 soldiers with rifles and lost all but 2 of them. we capped the alien leader and he told me about cydonia. with the technology i made an avenger that took 5 months to make, loaded it full of soldiers with personal armor and laser rifles, and won. goes without saying, i think i broke a world record.
does anyone know if u reaserch a captured leader or commander does some information pop up about them i press view reaserch and it just skips to allocate new reaserch without telling me anything or showing me a picture or anything

What is better than X-Com: UFO defense? Well, it X-COM game turned into FPS game to please the fans. I mean if you are X-COM fan, then you will also like FPS games. You get to shoot aliens in first person ... totally original.

Man, why did u shoot the floor in front of the lime cake? There really is no need to test the weapon. They are made for the Ethereal and assigned to the top level officers in Cydonia. In other words, they passed QC better than the ones you brought from earth's battlefield salvage.

The fact it can hold my attention despite its age shows, in my eyes at least, that it is an excellent game with a good design. I urge anyone who really enjoys X-com to look up the game Xenonauts. It is at heart an X-com remake by an indie studio.
Pretty cool victory, dude. What I did was quite unorthodox as well. Landed on Mars, got all my troops wiped out by each other thanks to the alien Psi attacks (they were all weak in the mind), except for one HWP (immune to Psi). Killed everything on the map with this single HWP, killed everything underground, blasted big enough hole on roof to get to alien brain, won :) Okay, this was in beginner mode, but still.
Best game ever made. Picked it up again recently on Steam and played through the entire thing. Nothing compares to the first time I played through it when everything was fresh, the maps were new, I was clueless about research, and had no idea how to get to Mars. But this game is still epic and second to none!
For Gods sake, could some company/individual/consortium/evil being with magic powers, please please please just re-release this game with updated graphics, a few new things to research, new weopans, perhaps a new alien species or two and a few general MINOR tweaks like that? Dont add in "new cool" stuff, like being unable to buy stuff, recruit people, build things in new bases whenever you want. This game is awesome, stop trying to change and just re-release it for Windows 7 FFS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks for the Website jackass I hadn't looked at in awhile, but made me realize besides you being to cheap to upgrade your personnel's body armor, that you won the game on the easiest level. I don't know how many of your force you lost taking the surface, but judging those who made it to part 2 verses how many you could take I'd say you got hosed pretty good. Just because you cheat does not mean that others do too. If you ever played the game, instead of just swallowed glue sticks, you would know that this kind of victory is pretty easy and does not require any kind of cheating.
@laurarockera That explains it, that and the fact the troopers with light blue armor survived on THE SURFACE OF MARS! When I took the planet back on the day, on each level btw, it was a hard slog. I lost both of my plasma tanks before we even got of the ship and I took heavy losses of veteran troops to make it to the brain. I've seen a lot of great mods, but this one just makes it easy for lousy players.

I used mind-control also. It took me like 8 or 9 turns but we never left the starting area. Most of my people were too weak in psionics but I had 3 or 4 really good ones. >:)

i blew up the alien brain without actually seeing it, i sent a blaster bomb up the elevator shaft and it chain reaction explosioned everything up there
Pffftt, a few training missions for mind controlling and you can get any alien under your control. Just make sure you select the strongest PSI troopers to board the Skyranger/Avenger. ;)
NICE victory! If my guys had been ranked enough I'd have gone for mind control as well. But alas, I was playing this on Playstation and the rules of engagement are a little different. There's actually a range on Mind Control(Line of Sight, I think).
@corinthianscori No, in the PS version mind control was even more powerful. For example if all live NPCs were under mind control at the end of the turn, you captured them alive. Sighting rules for MC were the same as in PC version.
@captainvideoblogger Which only goes to prove how pathetically weak my crew was if I was under the impression the Mind Control worked by LOS. That, and it took me over 11 tries to get my whole team through that last mission. I could finish the last mission with just one of those guided missles. Beautiful little item, that!
The european version, UFO: enemy unknown, had limitation on how good your soldiers could get and line of sight I think for PSI(not sure about that actually).
I also had a copy of Ufo Defense, I remember one of my soldier had so much time units so it could run all the way to the brain and kill it. One backdraw was that after any valye above 250, it looped back to 0. So instead of having 254 your soldier got 4 in stamina...
I was 5 when this game was all the rage... but I love Silent Storm which I've heard compared to this... is it just too old to play these days? I mean the graphics are ANCIENT.
@IcyScythe I've got an xbox 360, and ps3, I'm 18 and play all these new games like fallout 3, gears of war, oblivion, etc. And I still think XCom is one of the best games ever, I slapped it in the ps a couple weeks ago, and played it for about a week. Gave myself challenges, get a sectoid leader by the end of february. Psionics baby! But yeah this game is absolutely fantastic, just disregard the graphics and enjoy the game itself. Just because you cheat does not mean that others do too. If you ever played the game, instead of just swallowed glue sticks, you would know that this kind of victory is pretty easy and does not require any kind of cheating.

@laurarockera That explains it, that and the fact the troopers with light blue armor survived on THE SURFACE OF MARS! When I took the planet back on the day, on each level btw, it was a hard slog. I lost both of my plasma tanks before we even got of the ship and I took heavy losses of veteran troops to make it to the brain. I've seen a lot of great mods, but this one just makes it easy for lousy players.

@captainvideoblogger Jackass I was a legend at this game. You can't use troops with that type of armor on Mars. You cheated plain and simple. I'm sure the game is pretty easy when you hack it, but for the rest of us it meant using our brains to win. You took the easy way out, and your "great victory" is a hollow one. Try playing the game straight up on super human, and win it and than come talk to me.

I armed and equipped my troops the best, and frankly doesn't make much sense to send your troops without suits to an oxygen free environment, but hey I'm sure you got plenty of your troops butchered on the way there buddy. I used mind-control also. It took me like 8 or 9 turns but we never left the starting area. Most of my people were too weak in psionics but I had 3 or 4 really good ones. >:)

Pffftt, a few training missions for mind controlling and you can get any alien under your control. Just make sure you select the strongest PSI troopers to board the Skyranger/Avenger. ;)

NICE victory! If my guys had been ranked enough I'd have gone for mind control as well. But alas, I was playing this on Playstation and the rules of engagement are a little different. There's actually a range on Mind Control(Line of Sight, I think).

@corinthianscori No, in the PS version mind control was even more powerful. For example if all live NPCs were under mind control at the end of the turn, you captured them alive. Sighting rules for MC were the same as in PC version.

@captainvideoblogger Which only goes to prove how pathetically weak my crew was if I was under the impression the Mind Control worked by LOS. That, and it took me over 11 tries to get my whole team through that last mission. I could finish the last mission with just one of those guided missles. Beautiful little item, that!

The european version, UFO: enemy unknown, had limitation on how good your soldiers could get and line of sight I think for PSI(not sure about that actually).
I also had a copy of Ufo Defense, I remember one of my soldier had so much time units so it could run all the way to the brain and kill it. One backdraw was that after any valye above 250, it looped back to 0. So instead of having 254 your soldier got 4 in stamina...

@IcyScythe I've got an xbox 360, and ps3, I'm 18 and play all these new games like fallout 3, gears of war, oblivion, etc. And I still think XCom is one of the best games ever, I slapped it in the ps a couple weeks ago, and played it for about a week. Gave myself challenges, get a sectoid leader by the end of february. Psionics baby! But yeah this game is absolutely fantastic, just disregard the graphics and enjoy the game itself. Playstation Version = better sound/graphics worse loadtime

I laugh at those who think this game sucks because the graphics are not good. Yet, they don`t look at the most important aspect of the game which is the gameplay

@LFSmaSh agreed, this game has possibly the highest replay value ever. From trying to challenge yourself, to trying to master it. Taking out Alien bases in one turn, even Cydonia like in this video. And yes, playing the game with only lasers. Or without any armor at all, never using blasters or any explosives. Playing the game with only explosives =P. There is so much to do, it's possibly the best game ever. They'll never recreate it well enough, but if they did, I'd cry happy years

have you ever played xcom 1 ? If you havn't, dont even talk. those graphics where the shit back in the days and the game play was AMAZING. Now lets see this so called remake. It`ll be fun to play it once and after that it goes to the closet compared to Xcom 1, where you always go back to play it. Think game play and not graphics. Go search for top 100 games and you will always find Xcom UFO in the top25, if not ranked 1st.

remember command and conquer: renegade, or Tiberium the game that didn't even finish. I would complain because their are too many FPS's out there. this game was unique every character was unique u made and shaped them yourselves and you felt the pain when they died (if u didnt cheat save) even when you honed your team of 12 ud send them psychic skl to find out only 2 of them are any good and your best shooter changes sides faster than a lawyer.
