This kind of synthesis makes me long for the real deal. Emulation doesn't quite do it justice for me. In my home studio, I'd like to at least have a Jupiter-8, Prophet-5, DX7, and maybe a LinnDrum, an 808, and a 909. Oh, and maybe an Oberheim OB-Xa and a DMX, too. Until then, I guess I'll just keep dreaming about it...
"The Andromeda, on the other hand, I would wager to be the best analog polysynth ever. The modulation matrix coupled with the countless features brings the most well-equipped polysynth I have ever used to the table."
Well i guess thats where the divide lies. You appear to be more orientated by programming abilities, and i go for sound.
I still haven't heard a reason for me to buy the Andromeda to include in my music production.
You bought an Andromeda and claim to go for sound, dear god.....my first synth was an SH-101 my parents bought me for Christmas, my second was CZ101 and my third was a EX800 with a TR606 drum machine....were you even born then ????????
I don't believe it, Youtube swallowed both attempts at my last comment.
Again, very briefly now..
Using MiniMoog as an example. Heres a clip for those who are unable to compare the Model D with the new Voyager : watch?v=bMMaIEEFU6I
When i buy a Moog i buy it for its sound, not for features. Its a matter of opinion, but i prefer the character, warmth and rawness of the originals. Unless my ears, and many others, deceive me, they are not the same in that aspect.
What is it that makes these old synths sound so damn good? If you would try to recreate these very sounds on software it wouldnt sound half as nice. Though I can't really put my finger on the difference.
I love the Jupiter-4 and the JX-8P very much. They were all I ever played except for a few Yamahas. If I wanted to get back into synths today, do the current generation digitals best these instruments? Can they at the very least give me a faithful reproduction of the J4 ad JX-8P sounds?
I'm strictly a guitarist today, and from that perspective I've generally been disappointed with new guitars over vintage guitars, so I wonder if you keyboardists ever feel the same.
I has even already much work with today's synths. Also the most flexible synths today does not know the organic sound of a JP-4 or a JX-8P. Unfortunately.
Not to mention the Moog Little Phatty, MoPho, Prophet 08, Evolver. Analog has come back in a huge way, who needs a VA when you got plenty of new analog out!
Having used both a Prophet 5 and a Prophet 08, I would take the most recent any day. To be fair, the original wasn't exactly the greatest sounding polysynth available anyway, decently well equipped, but shallow sounding. OB's are better sounding in every way.
I can bet money that you haven't spent much time with the modern analogs, and it shows. Frankly, some analog modeling synths like the Korg Z1, Yamaha VL1, and Virus TI sound better than some vintage analogs.
"I can bet money that you haven't spent much time with the modern analogs, and it shows."
Hmm how much money are we talking ?
Anyway, im currently using a Virus TI and have used a Korg Z1 in my studio and production.
I absolutely love the TI for its enormous potential.
I've also played with a Prophet 08 and the new Moog's and the original models in my opinion tear the newer models to pieces when it comes to raw character.
Its the truth. Unless it is built the same, it is not going to sound the same. There is every chance that it may even sound better, but i've yet to see it happen.
Analog breathes, and they can't emulate that. I've seen the most advanced emulation of an OBX, which went to extreme lengths to emulate it, much more than is practical, and although in some patches it captured the tones quite well, its clearly missing that last bit of 'earth' that makes it sound great, especially when scaling notes.
The Andromeda is definitely analogue, but i find it lacks its own character compared to these vintage synths. Theres a certain amount of magic that was put into these synths, that is just missing on todays synths.
I know a Yamaha CSX when i hear one, but an Andromeda !?
Thats really what makes it. That fat organic alive and breathing sound with its own character.
I have to disagree. The CS60-80 have that great brassy tone, and early Moogs have the bubbly bass.
Why?
For the CS' it's the aftertouch brilliance. For the Moogs it's the ladder filter.
They were the first of their kind, so of course they stand out.
The Andromeda, on the other hand, I would wager to be the best analog polysynth ever. The modulation matrix coupled with the countless features brings the most well-equipped polysynth I have ever used to the table.
the 80's gotta return even if i was borned in '96 i know how better it was in the good old times just by watching movies and listening to synthisized music form those times

I agree with you! Good work! But have you ever try an Alesis Andromeda A6? I thinks the analog osc/filter/amp can generate wonderful fat sound

ElasticMinds 3 years ago
Its all about sound !
And those synths you mentioned sound poor in comparison with the originals !
Have a look through Youtube, you'll find a couple Moog comparisons. The original Moog just roars next to the new one.
The Prophet 08 has nothing on the Prophet 5 !
You just can't emulate or reproduce those big old chunky electronics of yester year.
They are alive ! Just look at any electronics.
Manufacturers just cannot afford to produce them like that anymore ! Analogue will always come back.
DonJuanDeMarco2 3 years ago

I will have to disagree with this.
I own a prophet 5, and it blows away the p8 in warmth and punch.
Shallow sounding? maybe you have a hearing problem.
And no, those synths you mentioned do not sound better than any vintage analogs.
The only newer synth that comes close to sounding vintage is the Alesis ION. Perhaps the best VA ever made.
MARANTZamp 2 years ago
@xxsmokeymcpotxx
LOLLLLL
The prophet 5 wasn't a fantastic soundin synth? You must be either insane, or deaf.
The p5 was (and still is) the richest, warmest, fattest, and most robust soundin polysynth ever made.
One listen to all the records it was used on can attest to this.
To say the OB's sound "better in every way" is just plain silly.
I do like the OB sound, but still feel the prophet beats them in most areas.
MARANTZamp 1 year ago
I agree 100%. I've owned a prophet 5 rev 3.0 for about 8 years, and nothing else has come close in the warmth/punchiness department.
The new prophet is good, but just lacks something.
