I did live by what is Rock retail park as a kid and this tunnel was a play ground for us as kids, we often would walk through it down to woodside with a crappy torch would scare the #hit out of us.
As a kid we used to go into the"Old Mother Redcaps" on the prominade just before New Brighton and wander round the tunnels .The house was derelict (spellt wrong I know!)even then (early 70`s) But the tunnel went quite away one towards new brighton .One back up towards the town and one that went towards the shore but that was bricked up and used to have water coming through when the tide was in. But they filled all that in when they knocked it down. Boo-hoo
@RichardWhelan82 Thanks but I now live in Hannover germany .But I`ve just heard that underneath an old factory here they used to built subs andthen sail them out through tunnels to the canal 5 Km away. I gonna follow that one up for sure!
this is the old railway tunnel that comes out at woodside not the monks tunnel, the monks tunnel entrance is right next to it by the old atmosphere and comes out at monks ferry by the swinging arm pub. we used to go in both of them twenty five years ago before they were blocked up.
@RichardWhelan82 You've got some brilliant videos on here especially the Bidston Hill Tunnels... Well impressed. I'd love to go in these someday but I don't really know enough about the safety of going in them and wouldn't really like to venture down there alone for that reason. its the old tunnel to monks ferry station, not woodside, monksfery station was closed to public when the old woodside was built but the line was kept open for coal trains for fueling the tugs at a stage in monks ferry until the 60's.
Been down there with 2 friends in 1998 was pretty spooky one led to a load of rubble and a ladder that leads to a air vent style shaft other tunnel led to the birkenhead bus station depot.
Don't bother as the place has now been secured. It's a bastard to get to and the paths are all overgrown. The fence shown across the entrance has now had steel sheet welded over it so you can't even see in any more. If you are interested, the other end of the tunnels comes out behind the CSA building at Woodside, but last time I looked this too was sealed up "tighter than a Ducks arse" (and that's water tight).

The Monk tunnels are closer to the actual Birkenhead car tunnel, in that same piece of overgrown area. I'm surprised you didn't see them on the way to this tunnel actually. There's two of them next to each other, underneath a hill.

These tunnels go from by the old MSF Ford (and old Atmosphere club) in the grounds of the old Central station. It's behind fencing in Borough Road East. They go down to Woodside, where the old train station was. That shaft leads down to them. Old train tunnels, not to do with monks unfortunately. Do some research on Wirral - lots of resources about with pictures. Good video!
i get that the man hole is in ford... the tunnel i am guessing was found someqwhere where the rock retail park is,,.. or somwhere, i would love to go to explore!!
Great video, the tunnels were from the old train station by MSF Ford down to where the bus station is at Woodside. Closed many years ago, used by smackheads, but very interesting to see again. i went in there in 1988.
