  • why no other patreotic songs? not even the national anthem of all things on this day?

  • Interesting. I caught the inaug after it'd already started... I can't imagine that they didn't play the anthem! Egad!

  • can't imagine no other patreoticsongs were sang on this important transformation of power of our government. guess the anthem is reserved for races, and other sports. non the less the power of our flag waving so proudly made me proud. but i did enjoy areatha doing as well as she could under the fridgid cercumstances

  • @myspacenews Still proud after a three year pillaging of the American economy ?

  • Way too much soul. She killed it

  • they should of let her sing Precious Lord LOL

  • Just as I expected.....murdered the traditional version of the song. I could hardly recognize what she was singing. I think there's a time and a place to boast on the song....not at an innaugural of the Presidency of the United States. That kind of performance should be saved for the music awards. oh well.....nobody cares about tradition or American history.

  • ...nor the rantings of someone who, for whatever inane reason, can't appreciate the song as it was sung-- by an artist well known for that singing style, and no doubt chosen on account of it.

  • To srvblueslvr: Who"s tradition are you talking about, yours or hers? America needs to understand that we are a melting pot. This song was chosen because Dr Martin Luther King Jr said in his landmark speech "One day America will sing with new meaning "My country tis of thee". If John McCain had become president the traditional way would probably have been more fitting. We are all Americans but we need to open our hearts to differences we possess. Aretha sang it with soul. Beautiful!

  • Extremely well said.

  • Much more traditional than myself or Aretha.... or even Dr. King. Samuel Francis Smith wrote the lyrics to "My Country, 'Tis of Thee" in 1831 and it has served this country just fine without the yeah yeah yeah souling it up. Sure we're a melting pot. But we're not going to roll over the history of our country for all the newbee's new age ideas. This melting pot unfortunately is comprised of people who don't know or care about our history.

  • "wrote the lyrics to "My Country, 'Tis of Thee" in 1831"

...and for all you know, he could've intended the melody to be something completely different than what you've come to believe is acceptable. Why act like you know what that person intended?

  • No ImmortalSynn, Where do you come up with this stuff? FOR ALL I KNOW is this FACT!!!!! ....The melody is that of the British national anthem, God Save the King or Queen.

No Question, No Doubt, No Guess Work.

Nothing but FACT!!! I don't care what Aretha "Intended" Nor do I care what you think. I know American history and you sir.......do not!

  • ...the only "fact" you managed to prove today was that you thought you could pass a hasty and poorly-executed internet search off as if it were your own personal knowledge of history. You failed.

But if it were, you'd know that the song's melody is BASED on Muzio Clementi's Symphony No. 3 in G-major, not equal God Save the King (Queen), usually in D-minor; and that it's been revised twice since the 1830s, neither of which are directly attributed to Smith. Hence my statement. Try again.

  • Lets just face it......Aretha sounded drunk as a frickin' stunk and sang a f___ed up version of America. She sucked.....her bow sucked and Obama sucked for selecting someone who would suck so much. You suck Obama.....or would

  • ...you get outted as a pretender, and your argument crumbles from semi-supported opinion, to insult-laden rag.

    Weak, but not unexpected.

  • I'm not sure if Smith was a musician/composer, or simply just a lyricist in this case, but another possible scenario may have been that he used the original melodies as a template for lyrical meter, syllable count etc..... In which case, he may not have even really cared, or had a "vision" for the melody line.

  • From a musical standpoint, I prefer a more succinct melody. Having said that, Aretha is fantastic....always has been.

It sounds like what the other guy was trying to say, though....is back in 1831.....soul didn't exist. At least it wasn't something that had been put on the books yet. So, in all probability...Smith meant the melody to be closer to what was originally scored.

But who knows....maybe he was ahead of his time and DID having something more "soul" oriented in his head.
