This track makes me happy to groove easily, however, it also makes me sad 'cause this was the beginning of the end for Narada's fantastic innovativeness. I mean that dreaded term; crossover came to light...and most creative musicians will tell you that-thats when the lights of original music went out:( That lead to the sh*t we listen to today. Dam:(
Happy memories clubin it in Newcastle in the summer of 1980,Tiffany's, Madisons, Tuxedo Junction, Big Market. Aah those were the days, not a care in the world.
@maccagrabme not really I would say that it was more or less identical especially at the beginning, to the song "Jump to the Beat" sung by Stacey Lattisaw". I have heard Lying by Linx from when it first came out and on
numerous occasions since and this sounds nothing like that at all. Although the style of playing may have some similarities as it was very popular at the time.
@ff43v3r Actually, I see more of the Chic influence as the rolling bass rythms of "Dance, Dance, Dance (Yowsah, Yowsah, Yowsah)" are clearly there. And the musical interlude starts right out and continues with an arrangement pattern like the interlude heard in "Good Times". It would have been REALLY marvelous if the late great Bernard Edwards of Chic could have guest starred as the bassist for this song, but the bassist here successfully laid this down.
Hello Michael--So happy you made it big in your life and still remember that beautiful smile from High School.......Denise baton twirler and cheer leader class of 1972...........
Narada Michael walden was't /isn't only a great singer but also a producer & songwriter. There exists a lot of real fantastic tracks (listen to stacy Lattisaw too). By fortunate coincidence I found my first album containing this track in a big German shop in Cologne in 1980. It was real cheap, but it contains this gorgeous track & from this time on I was a fan of him & didn't miss a track. Listen to "I want you" too1
I meant 'wasteland'... my finger slipped on the keyboard! LOL It must have been because of the tears of joy that were running down when listening to this REAL piece of music...
TM Stevens rocks with his great bassline, Frank Martin kills on keyboard towards the end and Mark Russo's sax intro is out of this world (not a single note to be added or withdrawn) and like Narada says in the song... "Those days are over Baby"... He couldn't be more right in 2011... music has become such a wasreland I think I'll spin that record again and again...
if you love percussiom, check out his version of "Reach Out/I'll Be There".......it is some of the best percussion around!! Sure beats the hell outta what they call music these days!!
This song brings back lots of memories, my senior year in high school my first job at Knotts berry farm in so. cal and all of the fun. I hate to see where music is headed .
yes you know why music isn't the same now ? Because it is spoiled with untalented wannabe a star, accessing fame by winning useless reality shows....before, you had to be skilled and patient to enter the world of music, now nearly everyone can get to it...there are schools for everything
I loved those names Sri Chinmoy bestowed on his disciples, like "Narada" Michael Walden and "Devadip" Carlos Santana. They exuded grace and elegance. Now today we get alter-ego monikers like Slim Shady and Sasha Fierce. Eesh...
when this song came out I was bar tending ,this was one of those songs that when ever it played the club started jamming everyone dancing, the 70's were a blast !!!!
@bigdaddyelove Actually TM Stevens co-wrote and played bass on the original recording of this sick track! Randy jackson did play it though in live shows!
I remember this when it first came out during 79, and always enjoyed it when the radio stations played the extended version. So glad to be a part of an era when music was really happenning even if every song didn't come with a video. Talent and passion to make great tunes made up for it and that's what music should really be about! Thanks for posting!
I heard this in my office Friday and I feel in love with this song. I thought it was a new release. And it sounds like Prince is singing the chorus part of this song so I thought the song may be by him but I couldn't find it on I-Tunes. After some exhaustive investigation, I found Narada Michael Walden! Dude, I am now your biggest fan! Any other fans out there know of some other gems by him, let me know. Wikipedia has very little information. Thanx---Holden
I remember the year this came out. I still have the album and played it to death. They use to play this on the radio quite a bit. Loved his drumming and music back then. So refreshing he really had an incredible feel, so soulful.
Narada produced Stacy Lattisaw's album, Let Me Be Your Angel. Incredible album that stands the test of the time. Check out All American Girls album by Sister Sledge, another great Narada production. Aretha's Freeway Of Love is yet another example of Narada's incredible masterful insight. Phyllis Hyman's Riding The Tiger and Whitney Houston's How Will I Know and other hits by Narada show us all what a contribution he has made to american music !
The music was better back in the day because you used to have to have TALENT. You had to understand music, not just talk filthy with a nice 80s song attached to it...so sad!
@shoesnob Seriously. Have you heard that stupid rap song that samples "Video Killed the Radio Star"? It's on kiss 108 all the time now and it is terrible.
I was hooked on Narada after this album came out. Ohhh I miss this real music from back in the day. Randy Jackson's bass plucking is so amazing!! Who would have thought some day he would be on television doing American Idol!! Keep on rollin Randy!!!
'79, just finished my first yeqer in the Navy and grabbed this cassette just intime before deploying oversea for 8 months on myfirst Westpac Cruise on the USS Coral Sea, CV43, this album helped get me through.
@bladesaint21 I know what you mean buddy. I was on HMS Ark Royal in 79. We were also away for 8 months. Did the US east coast and the Med. Loved playing this the whole time.
Flashbacks!!....I remember just getting out of military service and I had just bought a new 3 piece house stereo with dual 2 foot speakers and played the cassette on my Technics double cassette player....man this song rocked the house...that was in the summer of 79.
