I just bought a straight blade by Dovo and it is completely new and it is doesn't do what you did in the video... Is it normal or do you think it needs a bit (actually a lot) of honing? Please advice.
OK I will. I was just trying to do it in one take and was unsure about focus issues with the camera. You can see the pencil mark on the paper below. I used that to focus and was afraid if I got too far up or down the blade it would not show up well.
I tried your newspaper stropping method on my pocketknife. I used an EZ-LAP extra fine grit diamond sharpener, then leather strop, then newspaper. HOLY CRAP THAT THING IS SHARP! This is the sharpest I've ever been able to get my knife. Still not as good as your razor, but getting close. I'm tempted to try this on a hatchet now...this could take a while.
ive bought an old razor and want to sharpen it to use, ive got oil stones of vairing grades from rough to extreamly fine, can i use these to set an edge and then move onto a strop and then newspaper?
Your standard 2 sided antique hones for heavy work. I have one in front of me right now that says "Ahconite, Olean NY". And strops for finish work. I only have 500 characters to reply, but I also make my own hones, one sided natural stone-super fine. One trick is to lay newspaper on a flat surface and strop on that last, after the leather strops. That is how I made the video, this one was "newspaper stropped"
thats one ive never heard, newspaper stropped, looks like it works pretty well lol, im gonna have to give that one a try, should the paper be sturdy, like on a table? or held like a strop?
If you think you know how to sharpen, try this little test. The weight of the short piece of hair being cut offers the only resistance to keep it in contact with the blade. If you can swing a hair at it and it cuts...it's Razor Sharp.

A new razor out of the box is not going to be this sharp no. Most need some work.

Great view. My only criticism is that you should show the test along all parts of the edge.

slow pressure requires a sharper edge to break the hair molecules.
an impact like swinging the hair into the blade, no matter HOW slow is still going to apply more force then he did.
