  • I can see where Bonzo got his hand drumming influence from.

  • Shit why did I write that... Wrong box :L JOE MORELLO IS GOD

  • Tracks barker and Tony royster

  • @cvcgac now

  • I see John Bonham took some notes!

  • I am no drummer, but I know great drumming when I see it. The only other drummer I've seen that is this great playing without sticks is Papa Jo Jones. Totally different styles though

  • I was lucky enough to meet and talk with him twice. A really wonderful man but more so a great talent. He wrote the book in alot of what we know today and was always willing to share and teach. Sad day when he passed. RIP Joe.

  • @Midcoastmaine1 Joe was my main influence when i was growing up as a drummer! I met him twice also.He was always flocked around by other drummers to learn from the master and was nevwe be in a hurry. He loved to help them/us be their best. He used the Moller/Gladstone technique -He is true master personified!

  • 3 people took four.

  • Chick at 1:26 is sure smiling at Joe...

  • @MrSabian123 It's common knowledge he hit that.

  • Now I know that God exists! What amazing sense of rhythm he had!!!!

  • @velenjak4 No offence please, - I love Joe as my all time favorite dummer - please leave gods out of it. Joe is a genius drummer, but please give HIM the FULL CREDIT FOR his hardwork and dedication, WHICH HE DESIVERSl

  • @007gumshoe It was just meant as a complement. It does remind me of the Swedish trumpeter, Johan Hardenberger, who said that it´s not nice to be called a genius when you have practised for more than 12 hours per day. To him that was diminishing.

  • @velenjak4ever no problem. joe used to parctice at least 8 hrs. a day i heard. young drummers are so lucky to be able to see him..growing up i saw him about 4 times is all ,later

  • it's hard to make a drum solo so musical..no-one can touch Joe Morello in that respect..and if it's pure technique you're into, he had that too to the nth degree

  • fav jazz drummer

  • Travis Barker is my favorite drummer but I'm not going to be stubborn or arrogant about it. By far this man is wayyyyy more talented then Travis Barker and even though Travis is my favorite drummer I can still reconize amazing talent and be able to apprecitate different drummers, style, and music.

  • technique out the ass......

  • Fuck drummers like Neil Peart and Travis Barker! This is what talent is all about! Now this is one of those musicians that will be remembered through time! RIP Joe!

  • Hahhahaha look at his hands he was married with two women at the same time cause hes so badass

  • Oh my science...

  • Très étonnant, pour cette époque, de voir un batteur au premier plan aussi souvent.

  • nowonder miss archer couldn't say no to a drummer

  • hes good for that time but guys like modern drummers travis barker are way ahed of this guy

  • @4against1 STFU you troll

  • @4against1 Your right but travis barker wasnt the best example :P and with the modern equipment who knows what Joe could've achieved... i mean if he started with modern equipment and all the knowledge we drummers have know

  • @cvcgac most of the knowledge we have now if its not due to him it has certainly been developed and bettered by him

  • @cvcgac I'd rather look at it from a different angle, I mean, where would modern drummers be, if pioneers like krupa or morello hadn't brought drumming to higher levels. they are the reason drumming could advance so greatly over the decades

  • @VentoRdrummeR you're right. I left that out but I agree with you

  • @4against1 You can't be serious?

  • @4against1 sure travis can play a rock drum beat in 4/4, but he has no skill using stick control, syncopation, or odd time signatures.

  • I love the way Joe keeps the time on the hat and kick has he fills. Masterful.

  • Before I start my day I give God His Praise and listen to Joe Morello.

  • YES SIR!!!

  • Fantastic! A nexus of old school and new school! This man had such groove and such great technical skills.

  • You can see the women getting wet in the background.

  • cus we love the 60s

  • Oh, this man! I have never heard sound like this from anyone else on drums.....gives me goosebumps...

  • Oh, this man! I have never heard sound like this from anyone else on drums.....gives me goosebumps...

  • 2:05, thats how girls will react when you can drum

  • @420dankykush - which is why I got into drumming ;-)

  • @420dankykush The ladies in the background are mesmerized as Joe's layin it down! Good stuff.

  • i never really compare drummers or use one to undermine the other's abilities... but in my humble opinion, i must prefer Joe Morello's playing to someone like Buddy Rich, simply for the fact that with Buddy it was all very fast and agressive, whereas Morello's playing is really tasteful and groovy. both are AMAZING musicians, i just supose the groovier aproach to drumming is more appealing to me:)

  • Golden hands :)

  • Wow what a drummer 

  • What a ladies man.

  • That hand drumming is so cool. I think im gonna try to learn it.

  • Art. Not enough of it. This guy is King.

  • The whole thing is just sick, but :36 is AMAZING!!! I can't watch this enough.

  • This man is the reason I got into drums at all.

He opened the door to all the little sounds you can get out of just about anything.

  • 3 people think Joey Jordison is the shit..

  • oh my god, he plays 1 and 3 on the left foot, I need to try that.

  • @chrisgr00ver

Correct me if I'm wrong but it sounds like he's playing 2 and 4 with the left foot.

  • @tamadrums1000 oh no wait, you are right. it is 2+4

  • @tamadrums1000 correct bass on 1 hi hat 2 and 4 rest on 3 and 5

  • @tamadrums1000 Yes his main beat usually was 2& 4 for the hi hat chick . He wrote and published a book in the early sixties with lots and lots of 5/4 3/4 11/ 4 6/8 ect beats. Sorry i can't remember the name of it - perhaps a disogriphy (spl). I learned alot of beats from that book

  • if only we can bring those hands back to life...

  • he mustv made many ladies happy with those hands...

    RIP drummer extraordinar

  • Joe,s technically brilliance also his feelings for jazz, well as a drummer he blows me and most pro,s AWAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • As a teenager Morello was a concert-class violinist. The he heard Yascha Heifitz play and decided to move to drums. Check out how thick his glasses are - his visions was quite weak but obviously had had auditory gifts.

  • true skill

  • low the smooth hand to stick transition, perfectly in time

  • Girl in top right corner turns into Bobble-Head Doll at 1:34

  • Yeah... absolutely great. Not only could he play like that with his hands, he could also play without the drums... look up "Unsquare Dance".

  • @jwpretd: Very 'cool'! See:

    youtube.com/watch?v=_yExwkQYcp0

    for the original version.

  • chicks in the background loving joe's handy work ;)

  • I like how he backhands the toms with those rings... or his fingertips...

  • nice

  • Absolutely amazing! I saw Joe Morello giving a drumming demo/masterclass when I was 16 and I was the only female in the audience - he was awesome!!!

  • Wow, remember these times? Women would cook for you without you having to ask!!

  • there's always some mad sexy dame leanin back and smilin in these kinds of vids

  • Was that Playboy at Night show that that was taken from. Those were sure cool times.

  • "Castillian Drums" is what this solo is all about! ( Countdown-Time In Outer Space)

You'll hear what was to follow this Take 5 effort. Thanks for sharing this gem of a great, and now infamous spirit of jazz rhythm. He'll be remembered by us all.

  • Asombroso baterista... Conosco a un amigo que toca heavy metal en su bateria y dice que es experto y lo rete a tocar take five con la bateria y no pudo, dijo que era un ritmo imposible... Los bateristas de jazz son de los mejores ;)

  • Now I know where john Bonham learned how to play with his hands lol

  • @TMIBand exactly what i said

i was like wow joe morello did it before bonzo :P

  • lo mejor de lo mejor del jazz.........joe morello

  • RIP

  • true master - the reason why I like jazz so much

    Thanks for the grooves Joe!

  • what a great performance, truly inspiring. sad, sad loss to the jazz world. may you rest in piece joe morello.

    SHINE ON YOU CRAZY METRONOME!

  • Joe just passed a few weeks ago. RIP

  • Favorite drum solo of all time right here...

  • R.I.P joe morello..

  • RIP.

  • at 1 50 i shit my pants =O

  • Hugh Hefner is in the audience. A fantastic clip of history

  • OMG until my hands hurt me

  • What a fantastic solo by Joe! The camera angle is really great in this clip as you can clearly see the speed of his handiwork. Also a nice touch with the intro featuring a hands without sticks solo. May he rest in peace.

  • is drumming hard? is drumming with your hands hard? is drumming with your hands in 5/4-timing hard?

  • Yeah, RIP Joe Morello...He topped Downbeat's list of drummers several years running...ditto Paul on alto...while others my age were listening to rock, I was listening to jazz...when they oohed and ahhed over Ginger Baker's drumming excesses, all I could think of was Joe's subtleties and taste, his sense of time and all those crazy rhythms Dave made him play, 9/4, 10/4...a true artist...all of them were...fortunately, we have their recordings to remind us how great they were...

  • So sad to hear of Joe's death......... a true great of jazz drumming.

Ace control and co-ordination and musicianship. the best way to pay tribute is to listen to Take 5 and then go and work it out on a kit.......great fun and a way to pay the great man homage

  • Drumming with hands IN 5/4.

  • I'm a drummer and i know its super hard to play with your hands and make it sound as good as he does it.

  • R.I.P.

  • RIP Joe Morello, one of the best.

  • DRUMMING WITH HANDS!!! LOVE IT!!!!

  • first drummer to ever start playing like this instead of just going crazy with the 32nd notes at 200.

  • R.I.P.....thank you Joe....thank you!

  • R.I.P

  • I love jazz and consider myself well versed but I have never seen anyone hand drum before....brushes, yes, sticks, sure, but this? WOW! My band teacher was a drummer and a Morello freak! But I never knew he was this good!

  • What an amazing left hand!!!(the right ain't bad either!!!!) You will be missed. RIP Joe.

  • RIP. Fantastic stuff, especially hand-drumming.

  • RIP, Sir, RIP.

  • Claro que la rola dura más... esto es el "solo"...

  • We need examples such as Joe Morello to show us what we can be. He was part of the DNA of the '60s. Take 5 was released in 1959, and was played on AM rock stations, known as "Top 40." Wikipedia says it reached #25, but each major market had its own ratings, so it might have been higher in some places.

Music was a big part of that era, and the Dave Brubeck Quartet was a big part of a shift in energy. We had JFK, the Civil Rights Movement, the anti-war movement, Earth Day, Black Power, feminism

  • One of the BEST EVER!!................... RIP

  • rest in peace. One of my favorites :(

  • My friend Mike and I were drummers in high school in the early 60’s, and Joe Morello was our idol. We went to a Dave Brubeck concert one summer night. The show was magical and inspirational. After the show, the group stayed on stage for a meet-and-greet with the fans. We met Joe, who was very friendly and approachable. He let us check out his kit, and he even gave us some pointers on stick technique. It was something I’ll never forget. God Bless Joe Morello!

  • Ouah . Amazing! You are the best Joe, for ever . God bless You!

  • Rest in peace, Joe.

  • just......W O W MAN !

    R.I.P.

    Thanx Joe

  • Thank god, I thought it was a disease to kick so hard, you manage to move your bass.

  • R.I.P. Joe... Thanks for the wonderful tunes!

  • I first saw this group live in 1960. Joe is my favorite drummer. So long, Joe. Say hello to Duke, Monk, and Trane when you see them.

  • If Joe Morello gave you "the finger" with his left hand, you'd really have something. I've seen this video 50 times or more, and am still in awe of the man's talent. His touch on the snare drum is incredible while playing with his hands/fingers, and his finger control for ghost notes on the snare is amazing as well.

    RIP, Mr. Morello.

  • RIP Joe

  • YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

  • I now see where John Bonham got his ideas

  • GREAT, JOE... GOD BLESS YOU!!!!

  • That was an awesome solo! He played better with his hands than most play with sticks!

  • Effing genius!!!

    R I P

  • Genius! RIP, Joe.

  • Genius!

    RIP, Joe.

  • What a powerful groove...he sure needed some pig iron in front of that bass drum to hold it down while he played. RIP, have a great journey.

  • Legend...RIP

  • RIP

  • R.I.P Joe

  • RIP Joe. Love this solo, complete with bass drum creep and all. Legendary. RIP

  • RIP

  • REST IN PEACE

  • AMAZINGLY SMOOTH :)

  • Hugh Hefner and the beautiful people

  • One of the best, if not THE best, of the worlds drummers. Just listen to his 'sounds of the loop'!! 11 beats per minute. Absolutely amazing.

  • I bet he got mounds of Pussy after this.

  • ナマラ、プロだわぁ~~

  • Hugh Hefner up in the left corner...........Rob Tullius

  • I don't even know what to do with my life anymore.

  • I WAS IN THAT ROOM AND JOE WAS JAZZ THAT NIGHT? THIS IS WHAT IT IS ALL ABOUT,,,PHIL AMBROS SEE PHIL ON YOUTUBE SINATRA AND PHIL AMBROS

  • mind blown

  • Hell yes.

  • I wonder if any of the bunnies know this is 5/4 time.

  • @jdrum12 How do you tell it's 5/4?

  • @mindingosafado You can feel the downbeat is every fifth note - plus the name of the tune "Take Five" is kinda referring to the feel of the tune - 5/4

  • @jdrum12 I always thought Take Five was referring to taking a five minute break and is a down beat accented? and is a downbeat the same as a backbeat?

  • @mindingosafado By downbeat I mean "one". You know how you feel where "one" is? Counting ONE -two-three-four-five - ONE - two-three-four-five - etc...I think "Take Five" was just a cool name for a tune in 5/4. It refers to like you said - take a 5 minute break plus it refers to the 5/4 time signature.

  • @mindingosafado Count the beats. The downbeat is the bass drum. Beat two and four are the high hat. So Morello keeps the beat with his feet the whole time he's playing the solo with his hands. "Take 5" refers to the 5/4 time signature and is a play on words, i.e. "Take a break:" The theme to Mission: Impossible is also in 5/4.

  • @ttlms Ok, and before you posted this comment I did notice the high hat was on beats 1 2 4 5! after paying more attention, thanks for the help

  • Katsta's I dink dat was Hugh Hef lookin on,off to da lef slightly(look closa at the beginin) dat might ah been at da Playboy Mansion in Chicago..Hef had a show in da 60's where all the hipstas would mingluate...No body could pull off that solo left hand speed with the stick like Morello. I saw him in clinic way back in the early 80's in Hallandale. He was nearly blind I memba but the cat was doin a flat out roll with one hand while working the toms and cyms. Freakin blew us away!

  • Comment removed

  • Likely at Chicago's 'Playboy Club' - Hugh Hefner over Dave's shoulder in the first few seconds. You can even see Hugh inserting 'le pipe' at the :08 second mark - likely not the only successful insertion that evening - DOH !

  • @zardoz508 Hi-YOOOoo !

    bah-dah boom pshht

  • A true professional!

  • that was smooth

  • I think I just figured out where John Bonham got the idea to handrum. Joe Morello had to be one of the first drummers, well famous drummers anyway, to hand drum on a regular kit.

  • Too bad jazz gigs don't attract that kind of poon these days

  • @protorobsmos

You know what though bro...true talent will always attract poon....in fact even if it doenst attract money...it will still attract poon

  • @BrutusMcCrunch Or, the money comes first and the poon follows... what a world :-)

  • not many know this but he wore two rings cause he has two wives
