I am no drummer, but I know great drumming when I see it. The only other drummer I've seen that is this great playing without sticks is Papa Jo Jones. Totally different styles though
I was lucky enough to meet and talk with him twice. A really wonderful man but more so a great talent. He wrote the book in alot of what we know today and was always willing to share and teach. Sad day when he passed. RIP Joe.
@Midcoastmaine1 Joe was my main influence when i was growing up as a drummer! I met him twice also.He was always flocked around by other drummers to learn from the master and was nevwe be in a hurry. He loved to help them/us be their best. He used the Moller/Gladstone technique -He is true master personified!
@velenjak4 No offence please, - I love Joe as my all time favorite dummer - please leave gods out of it. Joe is a genius drummer, but please give HIM the FULL CREDIT FOR his hardwork and dedication, WHICH HE DESIVERSl
@007gumshoe It was just meant as a complement. It does remind me of the Swedish trumpeter, Johan Hardenberger, who said that it´s not nice to be called a genius when you have practised for more than 12 hours per day. To him that was diminishing.
@velenjak4ever no problem. joe used to parctice at least 8 hrs. a day i heard. young drummers are so lucky to be able to see him..growing up i saw him about 4 times is all ,later
it's hard to make a drum solo so musical..no-one can touch Joe Morello in that respect..and if it's pure technique you're into, he had that too to the nth degree
2:14 I think it's safe to say that we all (as drummers) have had to do THIS at some point in our careers. Morello was just going hard, we've all been there.
Travis Barker is my favorite drummer but I'm not going to be stubborn or arrogant about it. By far this man is wayyyyy more talented then Travis Barker and even though Travis is my favorite drummer I can still reconize amazing talent and be able to apprecitate different drummers, style, and music.
Fuck drummers like Neil Peart and Travis Barker! This is what talent is all about! Now this is one of those musicians that will be remembered through time! RIP Joe!
@4against1 Your right but travis barker wasnt the best example :P and with the modern equipment who knows what Joe could've achieved... i mean if he started with modern equipment and all the knowledge we drummers have know
@cvcgac I'd rather look at it from a different angle, I mean, where would modern drummers be, if pioneers like krupa or morello hadn't brought drumming to higher levels. they are the reason drumming could advance so greatly over the decades
i never really compare drummers or use one to undermine the other's abilities... but in my humble opinion, i must prefer Joe Morello's playing to someone like Buddy Rich, simply for the fact that with Buddy it was all very fast and agressive, whereas Morello's playing is really tasteful and groovy. both are AMAZING musicians, i just supose the groovier aproach to drumming is more appealing to me:)
@tamadrums1000 Yes his main beat usually was 2& 4 for the hi hat chick . He wrote and published a book in the early sixties with lots and lots of 5/4 3/4 11/ 4 6/8 ect beats. Sorry i can't remember the name of it - perhaps a disogriphy (spl). I learned alot of beats from that book
As a teenager Morello was a concert-class violinist. The he heard Yascha Heifitz play and decided to move to drums. Check out how thick his glasses are - his visions was quite weak but obviously had had auditory gifts.

Asombroso baterista... Conosco a un amigo que toca heavy metal en su bateria y dice que es experto y lo rete a tocar take five con la bateria y no pudo, dijo que era un ritmo imposible... Los bateristas de jazz son de los mejores ;)
What a fantastic solo by Joe! The camera angle is really great in this clip as you can clearly see the speed of his handiwork. Also a nice touch with the intro featuring a hands without sticks solo. May he rest in peace.
Yeah, RIP Joe Morello...He topped Downbeat's list of drummers several years running...ditto Paul on alto...while others my age were listening to rock, I was listening to jazz...when they oohed and ahhed over Ginger Baker's drumming excesses, all I could think of was Joe's subtleties and taste, his sense of time and all those crazy rhythms Dave made him play, 9/4, 10/4...a true artist...all of them were...fortunately, we have their recordings to remind us how great they were...
So sad to hear of Joe's death......... a true great of jazz drumming.
Ace control and co-ordination and musicianship. the best way to pay tribute is to listen to Take 5 and then go and work it out on a kit.......great fun and a way to pay the great man homage
I love jazz and consider myself well versed but I have never seen anyone hand drum before....brushes, yes, sticks, sure, but this? WOW! My band teacher was a drummer and a Morello freak! But I never knew he was this good!
We need examples such as Joe Morello to show us what we can be. He was part of the DNA of the '60s. Take 5 was released in 1959, and was played on AM rock stations, known as "Top 40." Wikipedia says it reached #25, but each major market had its own ratings, so it might have been higher in some places.
Music was a big part of that era, and the Dave Brubeck Quartet was a big part of a shift in energy. We had JFK, the Civil Rights Movement, the anti-war movement, Earth Day, Black Power, feminism
My friend Mike and I were drummers in high school in the early 60’s, and Joe Morello was our idol. We went to a Dave Brubeck concert one summer night. The show was magical and inspirational. After the show, the group stayed on stage for a meet-and-greet with the fans. We met Joe, who was very friendly and approachable. He let us check out his kit, and he even gave us some pointers on stick technique. It was something I’ll never forget. God Bless Joe Morello!

If Joe Morello gave you "the finger" with his left hand, you'd really have something. I've seen this video 50 times or more, and am still in awe of the man's talent. His touch on the snare drum is incredible while playing with his hands/fingers, and his finger control for ghost notes on the snare is amazing as well.
@mindingosafado You can feel the downbeat is every fifth note - plus the name of the tune "Take Five" is kinda referring to the feel of the tune - 5/4
@jdrum12 I always thought Take Five was referring to taking a five minute break and is a down beat accented? and is a downbeat the same as a backbeat?
@mindingosafado By downbeat I mean "one". You know how you feel where "one" is? Counting ONE -two-three-four-five - ONE - two-three-four-five - etc...I think "Take Five" was just a cool name for a tune in 5/4. It refers to like you said - take a 5 minute break plus it refers to the 5/4 time signature.
@mindingosafado Count the beats. The downbeat is the bass drum. Beat two and four are the high hat. So Morello keeps the beat with his feet the whole time he's playing the solo with his hands. "Take 5" refers to the 5/4 time signature and is a play on words, i.e. "Take a break:" The theme to Mission: Impossible is also in 5/4.
Katsta's I dink dat was Hugh Hef lookin on,off to da lef slightly(look closa at the beginin) dat might ah been at da Playboy Mansion in Chicago..Hef had a show in da 60's where all the hipstas would mingluate...No body could pull off that solo left hand speed with the stick like Morello. I saw him in clinic way back in the early 80's in Hallandale. He was nearly blind I memba but the cat was doin a flat out roll with one hand while working the toms and cyms. Freakin blew us away!
Likely at Chicago's 'Playboy Club' - Hugh Hefner over Dave's shoulder in the first few seconds. You can even see Hugh inserting 'le pipe' at the :08 second mark - likely not the only successful insertion that evening - DOH !
I think I just figured out where John Bonham got the idea to handrum. Joe Morello had to be one of the first drummers, well famous drummers anyway, to hand drum on a regular kit.
I can see where Bonzo got his hand drumming influence from.

@jdrum12 How do you tell it's 5/4?
mindingosafado 1 year ago
@mindingosafado You can feel the downbeat is every fifth note - plus the name of the tune "Take Five" is kinda referring to the feel of the tune - 5/4

@jdrum12 I always thought Take Five was referring to taking a five minute break and is a down beat accented? and is a downbeat the same as a backbeat?
mindingosafado 1 year ago
