In This Clip, From 0:25 To 0:45, It Was ABC News' Nightline's Report On The New York Metropolitan Area Bracing For Hurricane Gloria On Thursday Night, September 26, 1985.
Great lead-up and relatively clear VHS footage! As a kid at age 6 in Rockland MA, seeing those towering uprooted trees was a sight to behold. Thanks for letting us peer into time.
I was 8 years old, living east of Providence, RI in a town called Seekonk, Ma. We were in the celler for about 3 hours but seemed like all day to me. We had a lot of trees over our house and sure enough one hit our roof but only did minimal damage. My best friend across the street was not so lucky. Although his family didn't get hurt a large tree came through the roof and ceiling. His pool was destroyed. After seeing the damage, I thought....I like this, lol.
This was pretty good. I was 23 and living in Willimantic back then. I, like yourself, had the intention of filmming around town and the outskirts of town when I heard that police were arresting people just driving around during the "eye" of the storm. Didn't stop me though LOL. Great post!
In This Clip, From 0:10 To 0:25, It Was WTNH-TV's Action News 8's Late Edition's Report On Geoff Fox Doing The Accu-Weather Forecast On Hurricane Gloria On Thursday Night, September 26, 1985.
I was in my 20s when Gloria hit CT. It was quite scary and lost power for 1 week. Best to prepare for no power for at least one week. Many roads become impassable due to down trees and electrical wires. stay safe all!
@CTBob i am very interested in stuff like this, being a weather freak, i always looked forward to a hurricane up here, and have had interest of some in the past. i know with irene, their were not really sustained winds, just gusts. what was gloria like
I was 2 and a half years old, when Gloria hit and my mom was a young single mother at the time just 22 and was stationed in Cape May,NJ. We had to evacuate to a Coast Gaurd friend's house in Philly. I have vague memories of this storm. Talking Heads is playing on the Radio!Awesome!
With Hurricane Irene (2011) on the way, I got a little curious and stumbled upon this...Although I was a kid, I remembered this storm very well. I was living on Long Island then. We had no power after that storm for what seemed like an eternity. Thanks for sharing.
This was a lot of fun for a 7 year old that didn't comprehend just how serious the situation was. No school for a week? Win. No power? It's like camping!
My parents were less amused. Lights and TV they were fine being without. We didn't have a computer yet. But we lost a lot of food.
I remember that hurricane quite well. I lived in Warwick,RI at the time. The waves crested around 4 feet in the bay. My shed was blown from my back yard into the windows of the elementary school next door. The winds had to be around 60-75 mph. Hurricane Grace did its toll also.
Wow great video!! This was my first hurricane, I was very young. I remember a lot of wind and a lot trees coming down. The sound of the wind is still edged in my mind. I was only 5 years old then. Thanks for posting.
This video is a GEM. Great coverage. I was in the womb during this storm, but my family would tell me stories about the drama that unfolded from their perspectives in Orange and East Haven. My parents were also without power for 5 days. Besides the footage of the storm, I enjoyed the highlights: young geoff fox - holy cow, the life cereal commercial, and Talking Heads playing in the car.
I remember that storm well. The State was pretty much shut down in anticipation of the storm. I was living up-State in Enfield at the time. Winds hit 90-95mph and the rain was incredible. Then the eye passed over and that was it. It was a bright, calm and sunny day. Yard was a mess though.....

My 21st B-Day it hit L.I. I woke up next day and drove around my bug that was capable of manuvering around the fallen trees and debris.
