  • Geez! Feels like RC Kindergarten. Just get to the fan / flying.

  • teletubbies song?

  • thumbs up if u paused at 2:38

  • @thermosinthesis

LMAO! i missed that at first

  • awwesome!!!!!!!!!! not a badd 1st ruN!! ON A KALM DAY THAT THING SHUD BE AWESOME!

  • elevator music epic lolol;p

  • is that a brushed edf?

  • lol, sooo windy it just hovers there for a bit! :) Thanks, great work!

  • prop is not very efficient and slow so i'll go for the ducted fan becuse they're more efficient and run on eletric motors and they're simiple to build

  • @Spicyperson9123 props are by far more efficient than EDCs, hence, props can reach much higher speeds as well. I won't comment on which one is simpler to build... the prop with a prop and motor, or the edc with fan, duct, motor, t..... you get the point

  • some of the best flying rc planes are 2 meter sailplanes with a small motor on them

  • looks like my foamy extra when I flew yesterday in heavy wind

  • testing the ducted fan on a bit throttle.. full throttle,... engine stop... evil laugh..

best part of the video! ;)

  • the airplane looks lie swimming in the air (having a hard time to keep up)

  • how long can it last in the air?

  • omg trow the plane already, fuuuuuuck!

  • I am sure the ducted fan concept works in the windiest of conditions but...you would probably do better just slope flying it without the ducted fan unit attached. The unit in this weather condition is probably providing more parasitic drag than its worth.

What is more convincing of this proof of concept (utilization of the ducted fan unit) is to use it in dead calm zero wind conditions and THEN we can see the degree of useable thrust and climb rate of the model.

    Klockwerken

  • music is lame

  • I HATE THIS ANOYING MUSIC!!!

  • channel 1 is usually elevator

  • @JRBeaman

    nope, sry.

  • wahaah funny song xd nice plane dude;)

  • lol, motor glider xD!

  • but, how well does it glide? can you get it to thermal?..... been thinking of a similar project, but still brainstorming on how I can get the fan more linear-maybe on the nose, or just after the wing with some doors that open and shut to allow for intake and exhaust to cut down on the drag of it sitting up there.

  • hey dude nice glider! could you please make a short vid explaining all about servos and how to make them operate from a transmiter, a bit like you did in this vid at the start but in more detail! thanx!!!

  • You need to trim off your extra rudder servo horns. it's tweaking your servo by hitting the insides.

  • that IS pretty nasty isn't it, got visions of the mounting lugs eventually snapping. Not to mention virtually stalling the servo. Ah well.

  • Those ducted fans are meant for high speed models...efficiency on a glider must suck.

Much better to use a gearbox in the nose and a really big propeller.

Still, better to fly with an EDF than not at all.

  • i'd like to see it fly on a windless day.

i dont like EDF'S you need so much power to get a plane into the air,

  • Haha. Better check out the ducted fan jet videosof mine off my cagtapult launcher, especially the big F-18.. They weigh so little, it doesnt take much.

  • That is one big FLAT state you got there if that mound is the highest point lol.

  • dude ur my hero im 14 and fly r/c planes and would love to be able to fly and f4 [phantom man ur one lucky bastard lol

  • KOOL idea ,Ihave a glider i made about 2years ago never have flown it,but this guy rig a duckted fan 2 power it has renewed my intrest in it,Ido fly but only IC planes . good luck with it .

  • Brandi Haahahahahahahahahahahahahh! looks like there is some action over there .. i better go check it out. ROFL!

  • I've watched loads of these home project videos and its real nice to see a successful result great job i would love to try it but all i have is a hair dryer and i could never get an extension cord long enough to power it lol great vid thanks mate.

  • Haha. Hopefully, by now, you got a longer extension cord. Thanks.

  • where should i get push rods or do i have to make them

  • can i buy one of your planes or some electronics i am 15 and am getting into the hobby and you really seem to know a lot

  • g, my second hobby is windsurfing can you windsurf there? any lakes or beaches? that engine sounds awesome dude.

  • Is there a college course for this? YOu know making robots and planes?

  • hey NightFlyyer i have a question i want to get a good cheap gas powered plane for the first time becuase i've been using electric for 3 years now and i won't to swich to try something new so don you have any recomdations like cheap but still good maybe like a 100-300 dollar range?

  • you should trow that of the mount everest xD

but you have to get up there first

    nice video!

i'm jalous onyour collection of helicopter planes and all the other parts you have alot!@

  • Haha. Now that would be an idea. LOL. Thanks. I have a bunch, cause I'm OLD. THANKS.

  • You can also make somthing extremely odd of all your parts like a drivingboathelicopterplane.. (kinda a stupid idea) but i made somthing like that, i had a old 2ch coaxial helicopter and ik stuck that on a chassi wich i made from technic lego. xD it was fun but i couldnt stear

  • Great. Work or not, it is fun to try new stuff and exercise the brain.

  • Exacaly!

  • True!

  • Neat, bet the flying got a lot more fun after that mod. Interesting and I liked the look of your installation, clean and tidy.

  • Thanks. It cranks for sure.

  • hahahah wat a name

  • nice job wats the name of the glider ???

  • Thanks. It used to be sold by Hitec rcd, and all they called it was a 2 meter glider. LOL.

  • lol 8:29 you turned the dog into a tortilla

  • is the motor brushless?

  • No sir.

  • I need to link up with you some time you feel like flying gliders, I got a 2 meter sailplane I need to maiden and nowhere to fly it.

  • Great. In the spring, Ocheyedan mound is a great place to fly gliders when the wind is out of the south.

  • that fan sounds like a beast

  • hi dave i like the music can i have the download link?

  • The music is computer generated on my Pinnacle Software editing program, so no links. Sorry.

  • y the music

  • Because I like the music.

  • haha!!! because i like the music. lol nice video and glider and idea! lol 5 Stars

  • Thanks kindly. LOL

  • great! it's may need little more nose weight, hmm..?

  • Thanks, Yes your right.

  • hahah i remeber my first airplane.. an oriele plane. very bad memories that plane was a rock

  • Bummer. But rocks will fly with a big enough engine. LOL.

  • What part of Iowa you from? I am from nebraska!

  • Hi Neighbor. Sibley, Its the North West corner, 60 miles east of Sioux Falls, SD.

  • ok first learn how to zoom ok and second i shit bettter air plans then that

  • Shame on you. You don't even have any flying videos and obviously haven't watched any of my other videos. Bye bye.

  • wow seji6669, if don't have any kind words to say shutup your pie hole. BTW it's Airplanes not air plans so first learn to spell before posting insults on someone elses video.

  • reaaaally cool mate!

the engine was holding the glider, but when you start it, WOW really cool!

    take care, god bless you!

  • You've out done yourself that was AWESOME! Worked like a charm great idea!!

  • Thanks kindly.

  • how did you attach the ducted fan?

  • To the motor or the plane? I use a motor hub I got from a hobby store to attach the fan to the motor. The Motor and motor mount simply rubber band to the plane.

  • can you make another vid with this plane, its realy cool

  • Okay. Thanks.

  • nice plane =D

  • Thank you.

  • Now I have seen this i want to but a ducted fan on a glider!! They looks so good with it on it!!!!

  • Yes. I like it.

  • What are the wind speeds usually?

  • Winds here are usually 10 Knots or higher. When we flew this, it was about 25 knots.

  • thats a powerful duct fan!

  • Dave what do you think i should try first a loop or roll. Well what is easier. Note: THis is my trojan. well im loving that thing. I am goin to prove that some people dont need a sim to fly. Even though i reccomend it to those who read this comment.

  • Do a nice big loop first. Keep the wings level throughout.

  • It reminds me my spirit elite, but this one has a motor but no ailerons and volets ( gouvernes of wings )

  • Lots of my young followers requested this. They are not experts like you.

  • thanks for this Dave its a nice example of the kind of winds they can handle and nice insight to the inner workings. getting my first plane this week (ep glider) cant wait, ive been wanting one for past 25 years but put off at the expense but its so cheap now.

    cheers

  • Great. See my latest video on the Phantom Firebird slope soaring with the camera on board. It is amazing it flew in the fierce wind.

  • ye that was impressive. that firebird is £50 in the UK and cos i want to make use of my spare servos, TX and RX and batteries i bought an ARTF glider, problem is my brand new motor is making a clicking noise and twitching like crazy, tried another motor and that one is ok. dont know what the problem is but the motor is brand new. both are brushless and on a DX6i Tx the guy i bought it from said some motors do this and not to worry about it :/

  • Hey I always crash my planes right when i get them. So my mom keeps telling me not to buy planes, can you tell me a cheap plane I could buy?Don't want to waste anymore money then i already have.

  • See my latest video..."Learn to fly for $55".

That is the plane to get and you will have it for a while, as it is really fun and easy to fly...really.

  • Ok nice and cheap looks nice( and of course i LOVE the ACT) think i'll buy it later today

  • Great. Make a video when you fly it.

  • I bought the plane NightFlyyer is suggesting and it's still in one piece after my first day ever of flying an RC :)

  • See my video "Learn to fly for $55". The Firebird Phantom (with autopilot ACT)is a good choice and fun too.

  • Another nice video Dave, thx !

Seems to fly pretty good. My best regards to Brandi by the way. =:-)

  • Ha ha. Thanks. Brandi appreciates the comments too.

  • look 4 replacemennt parts man...u dont always have 2 buy a new plane

  • Thats for sure, but since moving here from California, I have built lots of stuff from spare parts, (as you have seen in my Junkyard dog video). Sometimes it is nice to buy a fresh kit and why I just produced a video called "Learn to fly for $55. That is pretty cheap and the plane is very fast and fun too. And someday it will be spare parts too. Ha ha.

  • very nice, looks like fun

  • Thanks.. I will have part II soon....the ducted fan without the duct!

  • you are great

  • Thanks, you are kind to say that.

  • Dave,

Just goes to show that the old parts box can still be depended on to bring us fun. Looks like not only was it windy but maybe a little cold. Another great science project. Reminds me of Mr. Wizard.

    papadewey221

  • Ha ha. Thanks. Wait til you see what is next. Did you know Mr. Wizard's name was also Mr. Herbert?

  • another 10 minutes video...

  • hunted* not unted LMAO

  • Great. So did you get anything or did the wind blow the game away? Ha ha.

  • lol i've unted out there before! used to live in Ottumwa

  • i know you have heard this before but how do you put the image above your name?

    (p.s. IM SUBSCRIBING!)

  • Go to your channel and click on Account and then you will see on the right where it says new features. Some are only available to Youtube Partners, which I am. Thanks for Subscribing.

  • hmmm is this feature available for me(not anything special like a partner) do you know?

  • You can experiment with pictures on your name, and text there, but mostly the fancier stuff is a Partner privilege.

  • what do you mean put it in my name?

  • top video nightflyer!!! it sure look very windy!!! great stuff

  • Thanks very much for your comments. Yep pretty windy.

  • Great work. You could make a deckchair fly man, awsome

  • Thanks very kindly... Hmmm Deckchair, eh?

  • The music is what got me, I wasn't even watching the video. The sound rocks.

  • Ha ha. Thanks a lot.

  • So awesome i wish i had rc's

  • hey exellent work !! that looks very powerfull!! I just notice that the 2 extra arms on servo arms are touching the inside wall of the fuse and the servo is moving from its holder!! you need to cut those 2 extra arms !! keep with your exellent job !

  • Thanks for your comments. Yes, they were hitting and I noticed it when I made the video. I cut them off right away. There servo is mounted with rubber grommets, and moved, but could not come out, but your right. Good Eye!

  • Looks like alot of fun!

    Nice job mate!

  • Thank you.

  • great vid again dave, that fan is one hell of a bad boy lol, sounds really powerful to,please keep them coming mate.

  • Thanks very kindly. The fan really spins all right.

    Stay tuned.

  • Yet another great video from you...Plz dont ever change you background music/tune it relly adds to the fun element of your vids... This one reminded me a little of Laurel & Hardy... great.

  • Ha ha. Thanks very much. We ARE Laurel & Hardy, climbing that hill in the windstorm. Glad you liked it.

  • so neat herbert! =D over 22 planes from gliders to ducted jets and NONE are that neat inside. =S

  • Thanks very kindly.

  • cool!any hints on making a rc plane?im going to make one with my friend and a teacher at school!it will use balsa and mabey have 3ch and then later i will add aleirons.

    wilz

  • Thanks. Good luck with it. Post a video when your done.

  • Thanks. I already did after seeing it that day. The servo is on rubber so no harm. Thanks kindly for your comments and being so observant.

  • hey more than anything i liked Brandi a lot. thats a cute thing you've got. he's lucky to accompany you on all these great experiments. nice video.

  • I thank you kindly. Brandi is my best friend.

  • WOW!now that is pretty freakin cool

  • Thanks for that remark. It is pretty cool to me too.

  • nice flying :)

  • Thanks very much.

  • Nice video Dave. It looks like it is still cold up there in Iowa. Good flight and great work on the camera Jeff. 5 stars.

  • Hey thanks a lot, Eric. Wait til you see what is coming next. Yep, kinda cold this week still! I appreciate the high rating from you.

  • got any pointers on how to fly 3d i just got my first one typhoon 2 3d and i need help got pointers

  • Well, 3d simply means 3 dimensional stunt flying. SO begin with learning inside and outside loops, stall turns, cuban 8's, spins and Snap rolls. Then if you have a plane that has an aft cg, designed for hovering you can do that.

Practice all this on a simulator, so you can learn to stay oriented. GOod luck.

  • closa call at 08:06 due to a stall... hehe...

  • Close only counts in horshoes and hand grenades, as we Marines say. Gusty winds are hard on big gliders like that for sure!

  • Nice build and flying Dave. Great camera work as usual Jeff. Does that Iowa wind ever stop? Can't do much thermal work with all that wind. Pretty much restricted to ridge soaring there. Brandi likes the planes too. ha ha I would guess that the ducted fan has more drag than a folding prop motor. Still, you work with what you have at the moment right? Bye

  • Thanks kindly. Yep...I work with what I've got, because sooner or later they get re-kitted! LOL.

  • wow!! the motor is so powerful!5*

  • Yes, it cranks, all right. Thanks very much for the rating.

  • always 5*

  • Thanks very much for that high rating.

  • that looks fun to fly, may i ask 1 question, how come it flies so nice slow and smooth through the air and how come a ducted fan is better that an unducted one, how does it make it better?

over all i enjoyed this video :) and hope to see lots more. (BTW WHEN CAN WE SEE A VID ON YOUR BLADE 400 I CANT WAIT I MISS IT LOL) :)

p.s i took my good old ef sabre to my hobby shop and bought a new tail motor along with some new tail rotors and ive conqured it, i know how to fly it well, thanks dave!

  • Gliders fly very smoothly and actually hold lots speed records for aircraft. Big wings help too.

I am waiting for a good day, for my Blade, and there just haven't been any! :(

In this video, you can see what the wind was like yesterday, so you know, if I am going to get crazy with my Blade, I want it to be a calmer, sunny day.

Great news on your Sabre. Have fun, and thanks for your comments.

  • very nice!

  • Thanks kindly.

  • looks hard to fly

  • Not bad, but it was very windy yesterday.

  • thats look great dave

  • Thanks kindly.

  • Great Idea Ive got and old Carl Goodberg Gental lady I might try an electric motor on it.

  • Thanks. WOW, Gentle Ladies were great. Try the motor mod and have some fun.

  • first comment:D...nice vid mate;)

  • Thanks kindly.
