an american principal? at the bolshoi? hhhmm.. i could see hes a good dancer but.. i guess after Osipova and Vasiliev left the Bolshoi will have to come up with something more shocking?!
OMG!!! our Amercian Prince dancing at the Bolshoi??? well. this are breaking news! the bolshoi ballet open its doors a principal dancer from a non-ex-Soviet state! he looks so fantastic, I can see the Russian Technique in him, he is showing the exquisite Russian Upper body, arms and elegance...Bravo!!!!
@palubob Wow...those are news...one of the articles here in the USA states that this event is the first. Well in that case this is sad that we have not heard of any news of other poeple performing at the Bolshoi. Thanks for the information,,,Cheers!
@palubob Wow...! those are really news...sadly we have not heard of it here. The news papers and articles here are stating that David is the first ever. I would love to know who else have performed then....fantastic! tahnk you for the info...
@consuelo1962. Perhaps the first male American principal dancer?? French dancers have been performing there as guests fo many years. Carlos Acosta, among others, has performed there.
@palubob No, Consuelo1962 is right. He is the first foreign principal dancer to JOIN the company as a regular dancer and not as a GUEST. So indeed it is quite surprising, especially coz one of the reasons Hallberg went to the Bolshoi was to partner Osipova as well as Zakharova. But some weeks ago Osipova (and her fiance Vasiliev) have announced that they will be leaving the Bolshoi and will be joining the Mikhailovsky ballet in St Petersburg.
@natashkk. Thanks for the information. The previous comments didn't make it clear that he had joined the Bolshoi. I admit that I spend more time trying to keep up with happenings at the Mariinsky. The last good news that I heard from the Bolshoi was that the delightful Kaptsova was promoted to Principal
What's one to think of that dilettante who oversees the Mikhailovsky? He used cash and promises of a roomy apartment in St. Pete to lure the couple away.
On that note, I suspect that Osipova's absence will have limited effect on Hallberg's legacy at the Bolshoi. His performances will be regarded as sublime, whoever his partner.
@DrVivianBell The reason why NO and IV left Bolshoi was mainly due to the fact that they were not given new roles anymore. They wanted to have a change, which is understandable. Definitely, Hallberg´s dancing will not be limited by any of his partners, but it would have been great, however, to see him partner NO. That was my point.
Not so surprising; he won the Prix Benois de la Danse for Danseur in 2010.

Amazing that he did the whole ballet even though he said in an interview that he injured his ankle on the first entrance!

Wonderful entrance - such innate elegance and perfection of technique - and he just cruises through the air!

@consuelo1962. If I am not mistaken the Bolshoi has opened its doors to foreign principal dancers for at least three decades.
