I almost got sick when I saw parts of this movie in a seminar... no water, just oil, everywhere, and everything drowned in it. And all that humanity can do is to burn the "precious" black gold because the situation is out of control. Also a comment from the movie that struck me: "Our children started to cry black tears." (Arabic mother)
The clip in combination with the song's foreboding lyrics evokes anti-capitalist or even anti-civilization themes. A sort of "this simply cannot continue" feeling. This video is phenomenal.
The Kuwaiti oil fires were caused by Iraqi military forces setting fire to 700 oil wells as part of a scorched earth policy while retreating from Kuwait in 1991 after conquering the country but being driven out by Coalition military forces
Herzog's " Lessons of Darkness" is probably one of the most beautiful and most disturbing films I have ever seen. I'm not sure, if I ever want to watch it again...it left me speechless for many months...and still does. So, I cannot comment any further on it.
Great choice of music, great film. Reminds me of some distant mining planet, but shocked to realise that this industrial wasteland is not so far away. Thanks
Terrific images (must get hold of that DVD some time !!) .....not the best music though. There must be so many other pieces that could have fitted better and been nicer to listen to ! :-)
i can't argue in any way that i have created anything near as brilliant or perfect as Lessons n Darkness, it's just something i kinda liked and wanted to put out there.
@iwokojance Completely agree, the original soundtrack works so well - Radiohead sounds affected and a bit puerile in comparison... (Does anybody know where I can get my hands on it? I used to have it before an accidental formatting accident, help, anyone?!
yeah... the planet's destruction and radiohead songs...I watched an interview with thom yorke (on youtube of course) about his album "the eraser" and he actually pointed out "the clock" as the track that is the most explicit song about environmental concerns...just a comment, this clip reminded me of it T_T

I feel the song is more personal and introspective, whereas the footage is on a grand scale, so it didn't fit well for me.

the images are from herzog's 92 film: lessons from darkness. the original score is amazing.

the film is amazing!! herzog manages show the utter madness of it all!!...and i agree the music he uses is just amazing.. eventho i like radiohead!

The original film by Herzog is brilliant. And so is the music. I like Radiohead, but the classical music that Herzog used is way better, imo.
