my husband and i would sing this song to our daughter to calm her when she was first born. now shes almost one and she still recognizes it. this is a beautiful song.
I'm not a giant dead fan, but I always felt really bad for Jerry Garcia. I've always felt like it should have never happened. People always talk about "when your number's up". His number wasn't up. It just wasn't.
the day Jerry died I was on a youth group trip to San Diego, & some of us had actually even been talking about Dead/JGB shows on the way. we were caravaning somewhere, and at a gas stop, one of the girls who had been in the other car ran over and told me that Jerry Garcia just died. I was like "NO!!" - just stunned and devasted, and the rest of the ride was totally despressing. I remember that Pretenders song Back on the Chain Gang - which sounds kind of Dead-ish, playing on the radio.
@bartmcfarling there were so many great eras of the dead but the late eighties up until Brent death were really great. I saw all my show from 83 and on. But the 73 74 were great years. Also check out the Rockpalast 81 shows incredible. As my best friend said at his first show at foxboro 87 "it's the best thing in the world" he just kept repeating that for 8 hours after the show. The dead just blew his mind with a litttle help from the Hogs farm.
@notmefuckingname They are 7 aliens that don't like this particular GD tune. Seriously, I think they're still pissed by over-shooting the Moon on the final approach.
Anyone know why it was still lite out and not dark out cause i know this is kentucy downs just asking??? Or am i just crazy and have not checked the setlist cause this is a 2nd set song lol...
i wish no one was fighting on this song, Jerry wouldnt have wanted that.. I love you Jerry, cant wait to be with you angel, you always help push me forward <3
This song gives me goosebumps every time I hear it, but now that my Love of my Life died 3 months ago - It not only gives me goosebumps but tears fall like rain! I'm still very, very heartsick over my loves death! RIP Dave Valdez I love you! and RIP Jerry, I miss you for a long time now! I'd rather be with these two men than standing on the moon!!
@Posterharpua Actually this was a serious highpoint in his career, jerry is wearing -SHORTS- and his little scuba booties, he was going scuba diving in hawaii during all his offtime, he was in great shape at this time, still clean. He was feeling very confident here, otherwise he wouldn't be wearing shorts, trust me this era didnt last more than a few years. Not until Brent and Bill Graham died did he really lose it. But yeah the guy aged dramatically, a whole empire rested on his shoulders.
@phyuckyeu Well Jerry was the leader of the band...but the weight rested equally on all of their shoulders. The music has its own life. And so it goes...
I had to hear this song (one of the last great Hunter/Garcia compositions), clicked on this version, & found it was recorded exactly 21 years ago, today... I remember my Dead Days like they were yesterday; I wish some were tomorrow. Thank Goddess Jerry lives on You Tube, a bit more tangibly than in my heart. I was so lucky to be alive & with the Dead when they shone; it is one of the greatest miracles of humanity that these guys came together, to make the most transcendent music ever heard...
So why is there an ad on this video? Is it not the deal that you can trade back and forth live shows and they could be taped- as long as you don't make money from them. Seems to me that you are making money off of Jerry here, but you really don't own the rights to this video.

i m glad to know that many of us have a same feeling about grateful dead. we feel the same thing when we listen to em. i don't want to compare their music with nybody else because grateful dead has a special place in my heart. and i know a lot of you think the same. haven't u guys read a comment and felt "omg i feel the same". wow. i am so happy. coz this was the whole idea of grateful dead.. bringing every stranger together. i am glad i have friends like u. my personal youtube deadheads :)
@blish101 the day Jerry died i was driving from toledo, oh down I-75. I was working so dressed in quite undeadlike attire - but it did not matter. i stopped for gasoline somewhere around Lima. Notice several cars at gas station were gathered in a corner of the parking lot. One of the folks lingering in the lot saw the small dead decal on my rear window. i drove to that corner. @verbenco Dude...you're good! I saw them last in CLT 95, like it was going ot be forever. I had no clue how wore out his body was, but I sure was gladder that Fuck that I got to experience once second ot it. ENJOY
In this he actually sings pretty well, something that Jerry often didn't do. In most of the recordings of this song the song seems largely atmospheric, or, I suppose for this song, lack of atmospheric, so to speak.
i love how the dead dont care what you do with their music. they let people openly tape all the concerts and spread it around. they werent in it for the money, all they wanted was to play music and be happy.
Love the Hippies! In view of the SUPER MOON this was even better. Love peace and pass it on! Been Jammin all afternoon to the classics with my daughter lol times change My Dad (rip) was tryin to smash the l.p's. feel the love Rick Wichita Kansas
LOL bob and phil: nice legs. was it really in style in 1990 for men to wear shorts that didnt even extend halfway to their knees? i was 5 months old at the time so i wouldnt really know.
Honestly many boys were wearing short shorts then....I never really dug that look - even on Phil and Bobby. LOL. However, Standing on the Moon was always sooo nice to hear.
I've listened to many versions of this song and this one has to be the best. It's so calm and mellow. The guitar work is so clean and simple and the keyboard work is beautiful. These fellows really worked good together. There's a time and place for everything. Just glad it's recorded.
One of jerry's best but I disagree about Jerry's heart attack, I cannot believe that they left him unsupervised so long, if they had checked on him earlier he could still be with us. Just think of the years of music everyone could have enjoyed. I am still grieving about losing him.
First time I heard this live, I thought I knew Jerry's heart. Then I learned that Robert Hunter wrote the lyrics....and chosen by Jerry to do so, because he represented Jerry's heart lyrically, better than anyone else.....That was when I earned how important Robert Hunter was, to Jerry.
I was 5th row right in front of Phil...I still crack up at his gym teacher get up. Phil does not have the legs for shorts and tube socks!!
GREAT version none the less, and I second the emotion of the person who decried the lack of the He's Gone > Jam to follow. That was one of my personal favorite moments in music shared with the Grateful Dead
at one time a great person said "if we knew about scuba diving, thats the only drug you need" or maybe thats it.(perhaps I should have scuba dived more) maybe I would remember more . but not be who I am today? its a fence line no?
at one time a great person said "if we knew about scuba diving, thats the only drug you need" or maybe thats it.(perhaps I should have scuba dived more.
Did you asses(the one that call him a junkie) ever think it takes a lot out of a person to do shows + fans, friends, junkies shoving shit in the mans face. He said in an interview if he goes back on tour he's picking up. It's a rough life on the road if your old and in pain....sad but the man was broke needed $ went on tour and it killed him he died for you(the fans) and $ to live R.I.P. JG hope you've got the peace you needed in life>>>
Oh man, it SUCKS that the jam is cut off right before it starts... It's what makes this SOTM SO special ! Get the DVD ! This bonus track is better than the entire concert that procedes it.....
@Darkstarno801 Withdrawal can induce a heart attack -- it's very hard on the body, even under medical supervision. He might have lived somewhat longer if he kept using, but at his age and with his medical history, neither option was particularly good. Apparently, though, his habit had reached the point where he wasn't going to be Jerry if he kept using. He did the wise thing, admittedly a gamble, and it just didn't pay off in this instance. It was too late. Conspiracy theories kill.
When, towards the end, Jerry would take the tempo to that ultra slow and ever slowing zone I can not help but to think it has something to do with the heroin which is sad. I know people who were very close to him since the beginning and all say how incredibly isolated and alone he felt, in large part and ironically, because of the pedestal that people placed him on. He didn't want to be called "God" or be a father figure. He simply wanted to be a normally accepted person. Junk eased that pain
@dockaiser brotha: thats a direct quote from Dan Healy (who went on tape saying exactly that in an interview I did with him last year), one of Jerry's longest and closest friends and long time sound man for the Dead. Really don't care how much of a head you are or how big an opinion you have, when someone as close to Jerry shares something of that nature its beyond obsessed speculation and more of a report from the reality of one man's life.
I will set the scene for those of you who weren't at this show, Over 500 people were arrested by Louisville authorities before the band even took the stage. Bad scene.
sounds like a good thing!! such a beautiful song huh!! I could feel my friend shining down from the moon tonight!! I guess he is up there with Jerry!!
i was generously "splashed" by a close friend and as i recall, you had to enter via your seat/section #. i was seperated from my gal and friends. heavily dosed w/ the setting sun behind the stage, i held on to my lone chair in the back row, alone and prayin' to jerry to ease the trip! the sun finnally set behind the stage when they pulled this, one of my fave newer tunes! i felt blessed! what a beautiful start of a long strange tour!the last tour w/ Brent.RIP.
@AlabamaRiverMan Because it was over 95 degrees that day. I was one of the fortunate few who got under the pavilions where the fans were blowing:) The band had a rough time that day with one of the amps overheating and shutting down, constant re-tuning after (and sometimes during), each song. To top it off Brent had to go to their trailer for about an hour due to dehydration, so Bill and Mickey put on a long drum solo then Jerry and Phil did a really long rendition of Spanish Rose, aah memories
I only saw them once. Wed night show at the Omni 1995. Absolutely amazing experience. I had been doing east coast tour for years though because I loved the lot scene and shakedown. Once I saw them I was hooked... then Jerry died... sux. But I'll never forget that one show. Wish I could find the tape from it.
@AlabamaRiverMan Err, or was that the Oakland show earlier on that year that I'm thinking of? Ah hell, so much for memories. Too much liquid LSD was going around back then to really remember one show over another. They kinda blur together. I remember what happened there but not necessarily where or when 'there' was, lol!
When I was a little kid I cried when my dad told me Jerry died. This band was a huge part of my childhood (and still are). Don't forget this good music folks, don't let it get buried by the mainstream radio-trash of today!
Jerry. God blessed us with his "being" and music.....no one has ever lived life through their music / lyrics as Mr. Garcia did;. "standing on the moon" 1990--07-06 is the most poignant song ever played. Jerry suffered from "depression" as do I. This song cries out...........restt in peace Jerry, God blessed us with you and the Dead. shs
@Tomaldinho9 your definition of "responsible" strikes me as very different, and infinitely inferior, to my own. I double dog dare you to further investigate this existential inquiry.
@tristramshandy3 yes, yes I get it. The universe is objective and the concept of "responsibility" is subjective therefore it holds no infinite truth blah blah blah, ive heard it before.
@Tomaldinho9 That is not at all what I was going to say or what I meant. Perhaps I presume too much from your post, but you seem to link responsibility with work- but put no stipulation or value on the KIND of work.
I have seen this from Americans before- they value work, but don't go the extra, necessary step of acquiring work that is HONORABLE and MEANINGFUL to society
What kind of work do you do?
Does it bring you honor? Does it have meaning? Or is it just for a paycheck?
@tristramshandy3 And what you think is valuable, honorable, MEANINGFUL information may be complete BULLSHIT to someone else. Go preach somewhere else jive turkey. No one listening to this song right now needs to listen to that shit.....
I was at the Carter Finley show 4 days later in Raleigh NC. Was in HIGH school at the time - My first show - one of many over the next few years. Good times indeed.
Boy this song gives me goose bumbs, They all play so well together, much love for those lost and still living!

I will set the scene for those of you who weren't at this show, Over 500 people were arrested by Louisville authorities before the band even took the stage. Bad scene.

i was generously "splashed" by a close friend and as i recall, you had to enter via your seat/section #. i was seperated from my gal and friends. heavily dosed w/ the setting sun behind the stage, i held on to my lone chair in the back row, alone and prayin' to jerry to ease the trip! the sun finnally set behind the stage when they pulled this, one of my fave newer tunes! i felt blessed! what a beautiful start of a long strange tour!the last tour w/ Brent.RIP.

AlabamaRiverMan 1 year ago
@AlabamaRiverMan Because it was over 95 degrees that day. I was one of the fortunate few who got under the pavilions where the fans were blowing:) The band had a rough time that day with one of the amps overheating and shutting down, constant re-tuning after (and sometimes during), each song. To top it off Brent had to go to their trailer for about an hour due to dehydration, so Bill and Mickey put on a long drum solo then Jerry and Phil did a really long rendition of Spanish Rose, aah memories

@muzzickman
AlabamaRiverMan 1 year ago
@AlabamaRiverMan Err, or was that the Oakland show earlier on that year that I'm thinking of? Ah hell, so much for memories. Too much liquid LSD was going around back then to really remember one show over another. They kinda blur together. I remember what happened there but not necessarily where or when 'there' was, lol!

When I was a little kid I cried when my dad told me Jerry died. This band was a huge part of my childhood (and still are). Don't forget this good music folks, don't let it get buried by the mainstream radio-trash of today!

I went through a divorce at this time, and my dead shows got me through it.
Some songs for me hold specific importance to that time and those places.
this is one of my favorites.

To sing the blues as Jerry did,you have to 'live'the blues.
planzk455 1 year ago

I double dog dare you to further investigate this existential inquiry.
tristramshandy3 1 year ago
@tristramshandy3 yes, yes I get it. The universe is objective and the concept of "responsibility" is subjective therefore it holds no infinite truth blah blah blah, ive heard it before.
Tomaldinho9 1 year ago
@Tomaldinho9 That is not at all what I was going to say or what I meant. Perhaps I presume too much from your post, but you seem to link responsibility with work- but put no stipulation or value on the KIND of work.
I have seen this from Americans before- they value work, but don't go the extra, necessary step of acquiring work that is HONORABLE and MEANINGFUL to society
What kind of work do you do?
Does it bring you honor? Does it have meaning? Or is it just for a paycheck?
I am a teacher :)
tristramshandy3 1 year ago
@tristramshandy3 And what you think is valuable, honorable, MEANINGFUL information may be complete BULLSHIT to someone else. Go preach somewhere else jive turkey. No one listening to this song right now needs to listen to that shit.....
didgNdrums 1 year ago
@didgNdrums I would ask that person what they think is valuable, and why my idea of honor and meaning is "bullshit", and you so eloquently put it :)
Keep bringing the love
