I have read many books on Dublin and Irish housing Policy and this is the general setup for a few hundred years prior... Now we might be able to understand why Ballymun appealed to so many at the time!
I remember the place well. I grew up on Rugby Road adjacent to the buildings. In the 70's as a child I found it a strange environment. As the kids there grew up many turned to drugs and joy riding and I know a few that didn't survive long into their adult years as a result. The entire place was demolished and there were a few straglers who wouldn't leave and held up the rebuild process. The site of all this is now old folks accomodation fronting Oxford Rd and Swan Grove is the main portion
I am living in Rathmines now, Gulistan pc. very close to Mountpleasant, where did these buildings used to be? I now Rathmines has changed up a lot for people of other generations, but I think some streets have a little of the past charm.
@nonearthlychildren whats your problem? your mother told you things like that about your fellow irish people. she sounds like a very well educated person herself. you idiot narrow minded ass hole.
Hard to imagine, how people could live in such small space. Like d family of 11. Despite the sadness of this pictures it is amazing to see his families still managing their day to day lives in such conditions. And we tend to lament bout ridicolous things sometimes. We are so spoiled nowadays .
I've been looking for pics of this place for years. Thanks for the upload. Although it is very sad to see. I actually had the pleasure of being inside the last remaining unit one night at a party around 1979-80. It belonged to the ******, a notorious family from? there. They held out while the place was being demolished. They were surrounded by rubble. Their reputation was so bad they weren't going to be rehoused. As far as I know it paid off for them.
Just up the top of Rathmines Road was Hollyfield Buildings where the famous General came from. It was pretty much identical to Mount Pleasant Buildings. These places really struck me as a kid. I'd be walking by all these big posh houses (which I certainly didn't come from) and then suddenly you came across these strange buildings. I have always wanted to see pictures but many folks from MTPLSNT told me none existed when I lived around there. Thanks very much again.
Jesus no such thing as social welfare back then and people still survived. To think of how the state gives money away to people without question these days is dispicable. People that shouldnt be on wellfare on it and still living beyond their means with no intention of joining the workforce. The gaul of some people.
@jackcharltonslad Yes, U rite, they should kick some a** of lazy ppl who live on the dole, not makin a single attempt on tryin to find work, while others who really need it, who are genuinely seekin work havin a hard time makin their livin on it. I mean, ok if one has worked before n payed their taxes they r entitled for support, as long as one's genuinely jobseekin. But the tax payers are also supportin those lazy f***ers who r livin happy life on the dole. The state should keep an eye on that!
@jackcharltonslad By Jaysus, isn't it only shockin, terribles the word, I tell ya, terrible, terrible is too small a word. Desperate altogether, to be sure. My Jaysus, Joe Duffy will be hearing about this, oh Lord isn't it terrible!
My Dublin folks emigrated out in the mid -50's. There have been many tough times for the Irish throughout history. When was this footage originally aired? Was this done by RTE?
Americans, I presume?? it's so sad to read those comments. Your comments are sadder than this video here.

Dublin Corporation put people in here for rent arrears. It was a form of punishment & how there was never a tragic fire or the like is incredible.
A disgrace.
