I work with the same voice teacher that Groves did at LSU and have met him before. Its just makes you inspired and honored to meet and sing for such an exception tenor and he proved it again here
@r0614c I competed with a girl in NATS last semester who takes from Grayson! She delivered a good solid performance. I would love to study with him maybe for my Masters. I believe LSU has a great great vocal dept!
This is a VERY, VERY good performance - well sung, great tone and intonation from both singers, good balance and blend, good characterization. Thank you for sharing this with us. BY THE WAY: who is the conductor?
Incredible how many of life's mysteries you'll discover on YouTube. I was a childhood friend of Paul's in Lake Charles. Paul - I wish I'd followed your career more. I shall now! A Friend from Ms. Nelson's choir and First Methodist says hello.
I'm sure some cretinous modern-day composer has set that immortal phrase to music! I heard the word "vajay-jay" (or however it's spelled) in a performance of new opera scenes quite recently!
I'm curious about the negative comments for Groves. Maybe it's just my speakers, but they seem very well balanced. Both voices are the right size for the roles and I've rarely heard a tenor sing that opening "une femme apparait" with such ease. Groves' voice isn't particularly big (nor is Dmitri's) but it's clean and has an easy top. All the naysayers need to spend more time in the hall listening to live singing instead of recordings. This is what it's supposed to sound like.
Hmmmm, I think I have a different view than many of you. I think that Paul Groves is amazing. His technique is so consistent, and his voice is so free. Hvorostovsky is also a great technician, but in this case, the expression just isn't there. He sings his half of this unearthly beautiful duet like he's scolding a disobedient child. I wonder why?
Having seen Paul Groves perform at the Met and having the chance to meet him, I think he is underated. He is a great, solid performer. I see him taking over the roles of Alfredo Kraus, who I think was also underated. No flash; no bells and whistles; just good solid singing. I can always relax when I hear either of them, knowing that each will always deliver a consummate performance.
@iltenoredramatico Not all tenors are dramatic tenors... god, that would be boring. Paul Groves is a good example for a french-style lyric. I would never want to hear Mario del Monaco in this duet.
I love this duet...but neither of these men are my favorite. I prefer Terfel (even though I know everyone gets all upset when I say that) in anything over Hvorostovsky (who admittedly has a beautiful voice, but I don't find him interesting otherwise). The tenor is only okay, but I give him props for pulling this off! It's a tough duet.
i went to high school with paul.. he was a very bad boy...his singing was above the rest then...mutual friend and i were talking about how proud we are of him for making like that...neither of us recall him dating anyone..for that long a period...and our gang was always together...band geeks that is...
The fach does not really have to do with the color of the tone, but the weight. Dima's voice is overly dark which is why it's hard to hear him live in the opera house with colleagues that have good sized operatic voices. I've heard him many times at the Met and am always surprised at how small it is. Recordings are very deceiving.
What a good example of extraordinary voices to the service of a glorious composition as this duet demonstrates! Thank you for sharing excellence in music.

Both voices have the right texture and weight for this.
First class singing.
I have favorites too, but I enjoyed this posting.

@junehilde I agree, he is an amazing performer, I believe the fact he is American hasn't worked in his favor in the world of opera

Dimitri forever!!!

Wunderlich and Prey in the german version.
But in this one i think the tenor is to "weak" for Dimtri who is one of the best baritons alive

He's neither a bass nor a bass baritone. He's a baritone. A lyric one.

really? well i wouldnt know lol...i thought hampton was a lyric baritone, and hvorostovsky has a much darker tone.
