Birth of a Nation was pretty much the first modern feature length film. As marcolopolis stated, the cinematography was revolutionary, especially the battle scenes. When it was released it was the highest grossing film of all-time.

It's a cold reminder how far we have come in race relations but at the same time, such intense racism was common place not so long ago.
