Just used fraps mate, which you still receive fps drops with.

I seem to remember when recording this though, there was no AI active meaning that the game itself was using minimal resources and therefore allowing fraps to do a better job.

The best way to ensure smooth recording is to lock a framerate at a level in which the recording software would not drop below - i.e using fraps on a game running at 60fps and dropping occasionaly to 35fps, just lock the games fps at 30.
