@KrautRockJock "Mammy's Little Baby Loves Shortening Bread" was a tune popular on t.v. when Mingus was young. The song popularizes a notion that black kids love to eat shortbread, an oatmeal biscuit which, tasty or not, is not a high-class delicacy.
Mingus parodies the old tune with a new sensibility. "Who says mama's little baby loves shortnin bread?" he wants to know. Mama's little baby likes truffles, caviar and -- in case the politics of the song aren't clear enough -- African gold mines.
Thats Hysterical! I love Mingus. I gaurantee the audience was predominantley white people too. (was that Montreal? I know it wasn't Castle Hill!))As notoriuosly bad tempered as Mingus was he was equally resourceful and always hired the most qualified musicans regardless of race(same way a classical composer would.) I don't care what you listen to you have to respect that. If Charles mingus were a gunslinger.....
OK they don't like SB,.....but they DO like African Diamond mines......wtf....get your priorities straight......Why do most African Americans Dislike the song" Shortnin Bread"?
@miltonsuggs Thanx for being "Typical" and not helping me understand why most A,Americans do not like this song........i figured it was for a good reason.....but i want find out from your, temper"mental" outlook
@ObjectiveApproach Thanx for enlightening me.Never heard Whites or Crackers called "shortnin bread".But i will take your word for it.I thought maybe the original performers wore black face or something like that.
@ObjectiveApproach Oh! well i knew that part. It's fairly obvious he's full of hate(for the white man, course I'm sure he remembers the past all to clearly).I thought the song it's self was an insult,to African Americans.......Then he has to turn around and contract white musicians.....Thanx Bud
The fact that theres a white guy in the band doesn't change the nature of the song whatsoever, It's not a contradiction he's in the band because he wanted to play with Mingus spoken from his own mouth.
@krautrockjock i don't believe he's referring to white people as shortening bread, it's the little baby that is the white person, with the expensive/exploitive taste.
Charlie... once he and his axe were gettin out of a cab, I, a small woman was gettin IN, and the whole thing turned into that scene in the Marx brothers movie where everyone piles into one cabin. maybe you had to be there. I was terrified for the instrument, Mingus was a polite giant, there were 349 people tryin to steal MY CAB! and he was late for his gig. I recognized him but was being too embarrased and cool to really acknowledge it, he knew I did, and well, we finally hadda laff!
Miles and mingus should have a group of the angry mother fuckers of jazz both angry, never understood why they need to let everyone know they arent happy within.Other people went through worse then them they arent angry at the world.I hate negative people in the spot light, mingus turn your hearing aid on.
Anger produces some of the best music through frustration
Jazz and Blues would never exist if African Americans weren't angry, frustrated, disappointed, and upset about their social conditions in this country.
How can you play and feel the blues without an aching heart?
haha this is funny. some of the song was in the movie death at a funeral. with chris rock and martin lawrence. chris was saying my father was an acceptional man born in 1938. an acceptional yr xDD. all he said was acceptional. and he said the song at the time was Short"n"bread. he said mamas lil baby love short"n" short"n" mamas lil baby love short. and evry body looked at him all crazy xDD must c movie!!!!
damn i love this song...used to listen to it over and over. It is from his composition 'cumbia and jazz fusion' on the album of the same name. this part appears around minute 18. it is superb. dig it.

Not overdubbed... that's an audio illusion. I believe you're hearing the toms, tuned to a similar pitch. (It's a Db, btw.)
After all, if they were overdubbing, wouldn't somebody do something about "Turn the fucking mic on!" ? :-)
