When will people admit that Tiger Woods is NOT BLACK. He has some asian in him, some white, and some black. You never hear Asian or white people making noise about him. only black people do that shit. WHY? Cornel needs to shut up and start a business, a lemonade / hot dog stand. DO SOMETHING!
@Mrcbclobster tiger woods' official race is far from being the important factor in Dr. West's comment. His appearance may not be what /you/ would classify as 'black,' but he is undeniably of that decent and therefore a member of that culture. As a member of that culture, fellow african americans are free to identify with him and call him 'black' if it serves them. As to his official race, Tiger Woods is American, the son of a melting-pot society.
@Mrcbclobster i dont understand what your trying to say, your generalizing. i dont give a fuck about tiger woods. i never hear any black people talking about tiger woods. that nigga dont wanna be black, so let him be cablasian, or whatever the fuck he calls himself.
@mayer8356 If you think that talent is wholly subjective you are wrong, and if you think 50 sent is talented you are one of the MTV generation there is no hope for you.
@itsgabony To promote the idea that talent is something which can be tangibly approximated and measured is ignorant. All artistic output is subjective. To reiterate an almost tired mantra, "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder". Now I never professed to solely absorb the music of 50 "sent" as you called him, nor am I one of the "MTV Generation". So don't pretend to know anything about me or make sweeping judgments. And don't act as if commerical hip-hop is without a shred of creative merit.
@mayer8356 I did not say talent is something that can be tangibly approximated and measured. What I said is talent is not wholly subjective. I stand by that statement. If you think about it a bit more I think you will find yourself agreeing with me unless you want to believe that an artist like Shakespeare is equal to The Fast Food Rockers.
@itsgabony Whilst I would obviously agree with you on the matter of Shakespeare vs. Fast Food Rockers - clearly one is of much greater creative merit :P - I have to take responsibility for my own reactions to art as a consumer and ergo, a critic of art. After all, we are all critics as we all choose and discriminate the art we consume based on our own reactions and thought processes. I suppose I have trouble with stating outright that someone is totally devoid of talent or purpose.
@itsgabony All art is relevant, no matter how good or bad it is because good or bad can never truly be agreed upon. It's simply not quantitative. I personally feel that Gil-Scott Heron, Mos Def and Common are greater artists than 50 Cent, Soulja Boy and Lil Jon (comparatively speaking). Yet does that mean I'm right?
Sorry if it's getting heated. I do enjoy the debate :)
@mayer8356 I’m sorry but you are not making a coherent argument. You can’t say you agree with me on the matter of Shakespeare being a better artist than the Fast Food Rockers and then say All art is relevant, no matter how good or bad it is because good or bad can never truly be agreed upon. It's simply not quantitative. You accused me of being ignorant but I am not the one contradicting myself.
@mayer8356 All art is NOT relevant, nor is it relative. Art is founded on passion and inspiration, and any art that lacks such is only an attempt to dissemble art. Read some books & some critics, it seems to be a very contemporary (and extremely ignorant) idea that all art whatsoever is equal. No one in their right mind agrees with that, only people who are attempting to flatter, philosophize, or defend their opinion say such nonsense. This idea can only come from the nanny-state.
@Profitnation You don't even know what you're saying. Art is absolutely relative. I like something you don't like and vice versa, that is how you'd define relative. But it is absolutely not equal, no one has ever said that. But since it is relative you have to treat it equally.
And this is not contemporary. Bach, Beethoven and Mozart all had cheerers but also critics.
You sound like you've been reading Ayn Rand, she claimed objectivity yet she opposed homosexuality, a purely subjective opinion.
@itsgabony There is plenty of talent in the collective output of commerical hip-hop, it's just conveyed differently to other artists. So please get off your high horse. No-one likes a faux-hipster acting like he's above popular music.
Immortal Technique, Dead Prez, , Brother Ali, The Grouch, Zion I, Living Legends, Atmosphere, Tupac, Common (pol. conscious)
Every mainstream hiphop artist was once probably a decent lyricist. But now they are just making tracks for $. Feeding pointless information to the youth. So now everyone thinks hiphop is this mainstream version of it..
Other than pol. conscious artists, the music of hiphop itself, is empowering. Gets you through alotta shit..
Hip Hop artists are not to blame. It is the media moguls who have determined to frame Black men and women in terms of their worst caricatures. Qui bono? Follow the money and see the social engineering which seeks to actively promote racial conflict.
Yeah but if the money ends up in a dude's pocket because he/she accepted it as payment to sell us up the river, you damm right, I'm gonna blame him or her and they need to be checked.
Well, I never thought it would happen but I found my first point of contention with Dr. West. Brother West, 50 Cent is absolutely NOT talented. I know what you were trying to say but I think that should apply to the likes of Jay-Z or Nas (back-in-the-day-Nas that is) or Kanye or some select members of the Wu. 50 Cent is nothin but a business man. His claim to fame comes at the expense of mass ignorance and name dropping to start beefs. That and Vitamin Water. He has no lyrical prowess.
@jaganmaster Meh. I was referring strictly to talent, not talent as a rapper. It seems the only person you didn't agree with me on was Jay-Z. Personally, I like Jay-Z as a lyricist. (Some) content issues aside, he is good with flow and wordplay.

It is the music moguls having their way with otherwise good folk. Address it.
