  • This is the album version!

  • Oh jeez...where'd ya FIND this. First album is as rare as hens teeth now.

  • Didn't discover old school Oils until the early 90s but once I did I never went back. Great vid

  • Ohh,Garrett had a sexy body

  • Got Rob's towell one night (yellow) sweat an' all . What happened??

Mum went and bloody washed it......Faaaarrrkk!!!

  • what a meat head

  • Delightful Deja-Vu! I was there. Have never Loved any other Band as much as The Oils! They never failed to deliver. Big memory is waiting to see what Pete's Rant of the night was going to be! Always went home wanting more!!!

  • lol@88

  • Not bad guitar work! And young Mr Garrett, who could ever explain that boy?! Youd never think that these boys are, have been and will be the voice of their generation and a few that follow....

  • Love the first album-i was 15 and still was able to get into The Narrabeen Antler to see them...

  • You mean 1988?

  • @robram818 this clip was shot in 1978 the same year their first album was released.

  • Sums his political life really.....

  • Never seen a better band live.

  • Great band!

  • Damn he is fit Looking there.A Great song.

  • My wife met Peter Garret the other day. She said you won't meet a nicer bloke.

  • wow! what a change a year made huh? this is more like the album track.. still i loved that 77 live vid

  • i got a feeling that the Oils purposely played slower for the sake that they were on television... I'm very surprised how slow their performance was on that Flashez clip...

  • @dazph I think this is the album track and they're miming to it?

  • Listen to that solo at 1:48, man! I haven't heard it in about 10 years, SO GOOD!

  • Jim Moginie CAN play an axe that is for sure. Plenty of great solos on their first 4 albums

  • I saw him standing in the street on The Gold Coast onces .And No he wasn't jumping around lol

  • be quiet...you know nothing, AND youre from new zealand

  • Yeah well...you're from Australia AND you're a bastard. Midnight Oil had a good connection to NZ, Shipyards of New Zealand, Put Down that Weapon both songs about NZ. Plus Bones Hillman was Kiwi

  • irrespective of any of that...to suggest garret choreographed anything is bollocks

  • Hey bastard, I'm no expert on Midnight Oil. All I know is they've written some great songs, and that the above video is a shocker, so put down that weapon Sean, you bastard.

  • What's the story behind 'Put Down That Weapon'? I always thought the song was about nuclear bombs.

  • Indeed it was, I read it in 'Beds are burning' by Mark Dodshon (A great read) Put down that weapon was written in relevance to French nuclear testing in the Pacific, aswell as the sinking of the rainbow warrior which was most prominently acknowledged in the song 'Hercules'

  • I too read the 'Beds Are Burning' book. I guess I just couldn't recall that part.

  • they certainly were a fucking awesome band. I supported them a few times in a few of my bands around Lismore, Grafton and Coffs Harbour, even had a beer with Peter Garrett once (he spilt mine waving his hands around and had to go and buy me another) Their first album still sends shivers up my spine. But I think he should have joined the Greens instead of Labor - then pushed for a coalition.

  • If Peter Garrett was in The Greens he would not be a Federal Minister, could not legislate, would have no authority to allocate funding for turtle hospitals, native language preservation etc, and would be in permanent opposition.

    He would be useless.

But, it would be nice if he was a Green.

    Yeah,sure.

    Greens are nice. Politics isn't.

    Peter Garrett IS a green.

He is the only one we have at a high level.

Garrett is the most effective green in the nation's history.

    Vote Green, preference Labor.

  • wow jimmy boy had a tash

  • he looks a bit like santana during his solo

  • Peter Garrett should go to work dressed like that :)

  • Agree. Lets all just be greatful that we can claim to have these great bands as our own.

PS: check out La de Da's and Chain from mid seventies.

Absolutely awesome stuff. We can truly be proud.

    nznoz Regards argus

  • Cheers, and thanx for the recommendations. La De Da's are from New Zealand, incidently. I recorded a few old Lobby Loydd stuff on Rage recently and will be uploading that on my NZOZearly1970's accent very soon.

  • The Oils are the Greatest band that Australia has produced. If anybody has any of their unplagged performance from 1993 to post it would be great.

  • Steady, steady... Midnight Oil are one of my favourite bands, but I'd be more comfortable saying that they were one of the greatest bands Australia had ever produced... not THE greatest. Saying they're the greatest puts them above AC/DC, Cold Chisel, Radio Birdman, the Saints, the Easybeats... *runs out of breath*

  • Midnight Oil is the worlds greatest political band, as voted by Rolling Stone magazine. Midnight Oil was Australia's U2 in many regards, and Bono respects The Oils greatly. Thanks for uploading this, it was choice to see this gem.

  • No worries... I'm sort of glad Midnight Oil didn't become as big as U2. Could you imagine Peter Garrett in those shades and with that ego?

  • Christ... I thought about Midnight Oil becoming as big as U2 and got an image of REM!

  • Sorry i disagree. Cold Chisel were great but did not make it in america. The Saints did not have the longevity of the oils.Easybeats were trailblazers but again lasted only 5 years. AC Dc are HUGE but misically they do not compare to the oils. Olis had No1 album in US and recorded many great albums over 25 Years. Also a White Hot live band.

  • Very true, although I don't think Cold Chisel's failure in America makes them less of a band. But like AC/DC, they were very much formula clingers.

  • When they started, they were just a pub band

  • where is this

  • I think they started at the Royal Antler in Narrabeen in Sydney.

  • Just to answer Smm's question; this was filmed at channel 7's studio, who finance 'Powderworks', the Oils' first label.

  • Thats because M7, a branch of ch 7 helped made their album
