I've always thought of evil as sort of the unnatural twisting of good things. After all, God didn't make anything to be evil. It's only evil when it's used for evil by daemons, and by people who've been tempted by them.
I have to say though, that I found this talk of his incredible practical, and I'll have to try some of the things he suggested with compulsions in my own life.
So, so, so true. There are only to sources in this world: Satan and God: everything evil comes from Satan, everything good comes from God. It's so basic, and Sheen (rather the Spirit through him!) describes it powerfully: temptation enters our life through habit and then compulsion; Satan consumes the poor Soul. And we have doctors and psychologists running around: but the true psycholgist and doctor is Christ and His love!!!! 2:15 is priceless-that woman coming to Sheen for freedom
Actually, alongside Satan there are many other devils. But they all need your consent - you're not forced to sin (if you were, it wouldn't be a sin, would it?). Your explanation is too similar to dualism. In reality, there is one source of good: God (you're right about that), but everything outside of God is lack of good, therefore bad or evil. It doesn't all come from Satan. Like Jesus is light, whereas sin separates you from Him, and exposes you to cold(and finally, ultimate separation is Hell)
Well, I don't agree with you when you say there are many other devils: there is only one devil and it's Satan. However, there are demons, which torment souls (I'm not sure if that's what you meant). You're right in describing the sin as consenting to Satan's will. But, I disagree when you say that all evil doesn't come from Satan. If that's the case, where does it come from? Our very fallen nature, Original Sin, the human inclination to sin, comes from the Serpent himself
Yeah, I meant demons. They are also fallen angels, just like Satan. They all tempt us. Now Devil (big d, so Satan) isn't the source of evil. Evil is uncreated - it is rather a lack of good (thus cold and darkness analogies). Because if it were created, it would be created by God, since Satan certainly cannot create (dualism is a belief in an evil god as well, but Satan isn't a god - there's only One). Satan didn't give us concupiscence. (cont.)
(cont)Our being able to feel the inclination to sin is a direct result of Original Sin. But Satan couldn't have forced us - we (humans) have chosen sin by our free will.
Since we're discussing concupiscence now: Regardless of whether the inclination was *caused* by sin, or our nature always contained it(I wasn't able to deduce from Catholic teachings for certain, but I think it might even be the latter), we were protected from it (didn't feel it) until the original sin when we wasted that grace.
OK, I get your point and I agree with it. Evil was not created, but it is a lack of good. You're right. In terms of Original Sin, Catholic teachings states that humanity was created for good, but then Adam and Eve's disobedience caused for Original to develop. However, each child born is born in original sin, but Baptism is the only way to remove Original Sin. DOn't get confused: it does not remove it for good, but it gives the Catholic the graces to try every day: it's our baptismal call
Well something like that. The original sin is removed for good (this much is clear from what I've read - only Luther thought otherwise), but the inclination towards evil remains. However, I'm not sure whether it is a part of our nature or is it a result of original sin. Cathen seems to imply the former, and that the original man didn't feel it only by grace. However, I fail to find support for this in offical doctrine - if someone can, please let me know. Btw. concupiscence itself is not a sin
He's right! Compulsion is not a disease. My mother was in AA for a week and she just yelled at them that alcoholism is not a disease and they kicked her out and then she sobered up from not being in AA.
Wow. That was inspired. I never thought to look at things that way. We can get so caught up in combatting the bad temptations that we do not let the good temptations in. This was fantastic advice.
Yes, he's beautiful. I don't know if his broadcasts will bring me back to the Church, but at least I can see that the sincerity, openness, wisdom, and overwhelming love of Bishop Sheen are a glowing example of Christianity in action.
Then I suggest you hear more of his words as they're full of wisdom and reflect a true Christian, not one who deceives under the guise of being one. You're right that his love just pours forth.
23And the city has no need of sun or moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and its lamp is the Lamb. 24By its light will the nations walk, and the kings of the earth will bring their glory into it, 25and its gates will never be shut by day—and there will be no night there. 26They will bring into it the glory and the honor of the nations. 27But nothing unclean will ever enter it, nor anyone who does what is detestable or false...
Bishop Sheen is a truly amazing person, this helped me so much to get out of my horrible habits of procrastination and choosing violent computer games over studying and improving my grades. May he be canonized a saint!
Profound as always... simply profound. The vice or evil inside must be purged and not simply "quit" or ignored but filled with grace and good actions and deeds. May Fulton Sheen be canonized a saint.
After two years when I found this video, i can´t stop to surprise all the acknowlede onthis man. Intercede for us, Fulton.
