  • December 11 is Chester Thompson's Birthday! Happy Birthday Chester!

  • Saw them in Greensboro, NC, December 11, 1983. Indescribable! One of the happiest times in my life!

  • I love this version....I've loved this song... And just happened to find this version and I have listened to this longer version everyday since.... What a great great way they have of making an awesome song more awesome... I love u genesis, and again I just think that everything Phil Collins touches turns to gold!! Plus Phil Collins is just downright hot, handsome, Fu*kin hot however u want to put it!!!!!!I love u Phil.

  • @yankee3374 ever seen them in concert? its a even better experience, imo this is the best band period, case closed.

  • simply magnificent genesis. love 4ever.

  • I love the sound at "In the city"

  • Tony must be doing the bass part on keys. Cool.

  • @wrob2112 actually that's Mike on Roland gtr synth doin the bass

  • One of my favourite songs geez thnx

  • Great track but @ the uploader please correct the name in the title? Geneis = Genesis!

  • great GENESIS I love him

  • Love this.. but it does seem much slower than original tempo.. does anyone else notice that?

  • after phil's retirement youtube will be like a little oasis for me to come to just see them in there prime.magic

  • Wonderful song. Forever.

  • Is the intro to this song a sample, and if so, where can I find it? I wanna do a cover version of it.

  • @cubdukat It is not a sample. Tony Banks composed it. He was writing a classical music piece at the time and decided to create a loop out of it for this song. he explains this in the dvd enhanced Mama interviews

  • @poisson647 I read somewhere, pardon I can't remember where it was - that there is also an "old school" trick used on the opening namely playing the recorded tape backwards which obviously turns around how the sound behaves.

  • PETER GABBRIEL es mmierda, pura mierda! VIVA phil collins

  • A Genesis fan. Always have been, always will be!

  • Hi! First of all: THANK YOU!!! I'm a great fan of genesis. Can you say to me which is this DVD? Or show? I'd like to buy it. Thank you!! Is the three sides dvd?

  • @giorgiobrunet Ciao Giorgio,

This is taken from the concert video The Mama Tour, filmed in Birmingham, UK on February 25 and 26, 1984. The VHS tape was released later that same year and finally made it to an official DVD version as part of Genesis' The Movie Box, a 5xDVDset, released in late 2008 and also featuring the only DVD edition of the Three Sides Live video.

  • what a superb concert......thanks.....

  • did they keep this stage plot all tour? only time i've seen tony upcenter, usually stage left

  • @daddysevenpointfiver It is an odd layout with about 150 Vari-Lites arranged in six triangles to form a hexagon and several par lights in each segment, on an adjustable rig to be tilted in several directions. To accomodate this, the stage was arranged to have Phil's mike front and centre, Mike to his left, Daryl to his right, Chester's kit behind Mike and Phil's kit behind Daryl, and Tony's cage of keyboards between the drumkits, right behind Phil's mike.

  • @antster1983 I always thought the Mama tour had their best light show. The Mama tour and the Turn It On Again tour had the best light shows they ever had, and they have done many great lighting presentations over the years.

  • I think this song is so under rated. But it's got such a good rhythm, and lyrics, and it just grabs me at the "soul" level. I've always felt that ways about this songs. Most people have told me "oh that's just a boring Genesis song". I disagree, so much. It's got to be a very strong to me, JMO.

  • @tjrtherocksponge That's true - anyway, I got me hands on a full live recording of this show now, so thanks :)

  • great performance. truely one of the greatest bands ever.

  • life can sure suck sometimes but it's always half full, regardless

  • so reach out...hands in the air...don't care 3:42 just super cool with the music beat !!!

  • It's songs like this that make me enjoy Collins/Banks/Rutherford era Genesis as much as all the rest! :-) Amazing tune! One of my favorites!

  • All the scallies were into this album in the early 80's you know!

  • hell ya!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Like the song, not sure about this version. It sounds too slow and labored.

  • THIS IS DEFINITELY MORE ORGANIC THAN THE STUDIO VERSION. I STILL WOULD AT LEAST LIKE TO HEAR THE GATED-REVERB EFFECTS COMING FROM THE SNARE DRUM...ADDS A NICE TOUCH

  • I bet Tony told Phil, "Never, NEVER, put me between two drums kits again." LOL!

  • I have a question about this video/concert: Why - WHY - is half the show missing on the video? Did they not film the missing pieces?

  • does anyone know what mike is playing

  • @MrTomsanders he's playing bass

  • @MrTomsanders Mike is playing the bass part on a Roland GR-500 guitar synth

  • @MoneyMoog didnt know thanks

  • My favorite off this great record!!! This was there last and best tour in the 80's in my opinion.

  • Comment removed

  • I don't think anything tops Tony's opening chords

  • i want to see vids with the chit chat phil did between songs, this concert live he had the audience in stitches, one funny man, i remember laughing more at this concert than other concerts i went to

  • @LordoftheHornets When he put on the jacket before Illegal Alien he says "Can't buy these anywhere, you know", and an audience member replies "Saw one in Oxfam!"

  • @ aihoschema

As far as I know it was filmed at one show (Birmingham NEC - I know...my parents were there!) and yes it was an official release - I have it on good old fashioned VHS! Its also on Genesis - Movie Box

  • @squonkynut aww your parents were there and not you, i bet they make you know just how much you missed out on, i know coz i was there too, thing that pees me off is the vid lacks certain songs like dance on a volcano which they also played, i also remember a few genesis medleys played too aswell as the turn it on again medley which has non genesis songs cut into it, would love to find the whole lot in one caboodle lol

  • @squonkynut now then i have the same vid but i'm trying to find it on dvd because it is the best i have seen them live been a fan for donkeys....................

  • @squonkynut Is it me or is half the show missing from the VHS/DVD release? (the opening song was "Dodo/Lurker", not "Abacab", the "Eleventh Earl of Mar" medley is missing, and there are several other tracks absent from the video, notably "Los Endos" and "Misunderstanding".

  • Fantastic groove. Very much underrated, I think. Love the feel of the tune and Daryl's solo is sublime.

  • great video, great song, love the jam at the end

if anyone has the chords to this please send them to me...

  • No, genesis are never rushing, they always nail the groove ;-)

  • Tony between the drums???

I think that was the only tour where they did that, didn´t they?

  • Yep, very unusual. Perhaps the idea was to leave the lower front stage totally free for Daryl, Mike and Phil to move around. Doesn't look right though. I like to see Tony front stage right hand side (audience view point). I also noticed the great closeups of the musician, especially Tony - but I see no camera operator near them in the other shots. Conclusion: this was shot over at least two nights. Anyone know if that has been released officially?

  • I'm sure Darryl regrets that hair and bowtie now, if he didn't then. Mike's perm is a little wince inducing too, to say nothing oh Phil's silly trousers. But then it was the 80s.

  • This is one of those songs where the live version is much better than the album version

  • heck yeah.

  • Genesis is awesome

  • GROS CONCERT DE GENESIS .DALLAS 1984

  • the slower version sounds great!

  • That Harry Knows His Shit !!!!

  • phil acts the songs which makes them even more entertaining which goes back to the old days of Genesis.

the phil without the armani suits. sweatband and all.

  • incrivelmente lindo!!!

  • Hey quethetee,

Atmosheric, uplifting and surprisingly gay comment

  • Atmospheric, uplifting and suprisingly sexy song

  • One of the most successful musicians ever. With so much great stuff like this, I get why.

  • Phil always said, "I drum like a singer, and sing like a drummer" Indeed...

  • Was this recorded at the Forum in Inglewood?

  • It's the National Exhibition Center in Birmingham...

  • Genesis' best album! One of the best of '83!

  • every one's got their own favourite eras and albums but i think this is their finest stuff mama H B T S pt 1 2 and silver rainbow are just amazing and i think they sound better now than they ever did..............

  • Very cool :D

  • Thank you

  • MY fav song thank you for posting this i love it to bits

  • What is that Mike's playing? He obviously plays the bass lines, but why with a modfied guitar of some kind and not his bass guitar? Anyone?

  • Mike is playing the bass line on a Roland GR-500 guitar synth.

  • Thanks!

  • one of my fav songs i dont why i really dont but its the way phil sings it i guess.

  • Tony Banks is by far the best member of Genesis

  • Better on keyboards than Phil is on drums?

  • This is awesome! I love this album/song :D

  • wow

  • "Hands in the air, don't care". "Shout out". Two of the most popular Hip-Hop / urban cliches in a rock album from the 80's. Who knew?

  • All musicians have a prophetic edge-it's part of their God-given gift to prophesy the future...usually without their knowledge.

  • Maybe, but this song predates 'urban' music by about 10 years? Its probably closer to the soft soul of Lionel Ritchie rather than anything else - in fact I'd love to hear Lionel Ritchie sing this. (in fact its quite a hard song to sing as the range is pretty wide!! Love-it. One of the 3-man era songs I missed live, wished they'd played it more often.

  • GRANDE GENESIS LO MAXIMO

  • Fantastic era from them brilliant few albums

  • a fav!

this is the Phil I loved the wrist band and all.

  • iv' e bin drinkin all day feel all nostalgic and this is chillin me out !!!!

  • Daryl Stuermer's the MAN!

  • In reference to my previous remark, does anyone have MP3 rips of the 12" extended versions of this song and Mama? If so, then send me a message and I'll give instructions on how to send a copy to me.

  • love this tune.......and many others :)

  • I appreciate Genesis regardless of the length of the tracks. Though I do like the longer tracks a little more. :)

  • What's that Mike's playing? I mean, he's doing the bass lines, but on a guitar? Via an octaver? Anyone?

  • 6-string bass?

  • He's probably got a Roland pickup coupled with an octaver, it's not a six string bass

  • IMO, a lot of Genesis songs are better live(like Domino, Land Of Confusion, Abacab, Brazilian, Second Home By The Sea...) and this song is another example. I really don't like Phil's falsetto in the original, his singing in the live version is much better

  • You know how it is...most bands put all the good strong trax at the start of the album, but Genesis saved the best till last. Bought the "LP" back when released in the 80's. This tune never looses its shine.

  • Best song on the record!!!!!!

  • I have listened to Genesis for years, and when I listened to the Genesis album, I would never get this far (I heard the beginning) and wrote the song off. A couple weeks ago I hear this song on SIRIUS radio and heard Phil's voice but couldn't place the song, low and behold this song is a good surprise, I should of listened years ago!

  • I have often said, people need to listen to the WHOLE album of their favorites singers/bands. This is one song that is highly under-rated. Pure and simple, its one of their best songs. I get tired of the stuff that they play over and over on the radio. It is good, but, come one, there is more to these bands than just what is played. Explore the bands people, you won't regret it. :)

  • I totally know what you mean. I have followed 'em for years and normally know all the words on all their albums. But I heard the song's beginning and thought of it like "the Brazilian" on Invisible Touch. I was happy to hear it! Great song!

  • This is indeed one of the most "forgotten" and underrated songs that Genesis has from the eighties, and yet it's so good. I love this song - the whole mood and feeling of it. (Weird thing: I've thought that it would be good for someone to cover this as a hip-hop song.)

  • I was quite surprised when I heard those different lyrics. Does the version on the Archives CD also have these different lyrics?

  • Yes.

  • this is a jam

  • Very underrated Genesis song. Always loved Phil's voice ... very unique and his songs always have interesting lyrics.

  • Great song!! Genesis rules!

  • Never saw the live performance of this song. Super!

  • Always loved this one

  • Great song. I think they play the song a bit slower than it should be

  • Great indeed :D

But no, the speed is okay, imho. But longer than the original.

  • they should have done it just a snap quicker...love this song, tho!

  • Funny you should say that :) Longer versions of this song and Mama were recorded (About 7-8 minutes in length for each one), but they both had to be edited down to 5-6 minutes for the album - the uncut version of Mama was released as a 12" single with the uncut version of It's Gonna Get Better as the B-side. Neither version has been released on CD.

  • True, except for the "not released on CD" part. Both songs were re-leased as B-sides on German re-release of Mama single from 1993, which is pretty easy to track down through e-bay. There was also an original (1983?) UK single which has these longer versions if memory serves me.

  • Ebay? No way, then. But thanks anyway :) I'm still hunting for the extended cuts via Torrents.

  • amazing !!!

  • This is one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. Very uplifting, inspiring. If you're down in the dumps listen to this song- it'll pick you up.

  • Love this song!

  • from the first time I heard this song on the second Genesis boxed set I fell in love with it. thanks for posting this video, this is definitely one of their best tracks.

  • Wow, different set of lyrics :) Something for a change, overall it's a great song, underrated ♥ .

  • Great Song! Great Lyrics! Great Performance! I should come back to the mood of this song to give myself the power I need to get myself out of all this ugly shit I'm stuck in. Turn it on again!

  • god i gotta get my records back out lol

  • Thank you! A classy, beautiful song.

  • I agree. One of the best from the Mama LP. And Daryl's solo on this version from the "Mama Tour" video is just a bit better than the one on the Archives CD. Anyone agree?

  • Thank you

  • Excellent tune

  • Ha! I still forgot this song. Thank's for it!

  • Beautiful song !
