Great idea for writing boards, but for tablets or bigger surfaces used by artists, you should find a way to work together with palm rejection (which is turning off touch sensing when active digitizer pen is used). Future tablets (which are developed the fastest today) for sure will use pen and touch input.
Honestly these people saying it laggy and not ready for commerical use and blah blah. If it wasn't already obvious this is cleary in a R&D lab and a technical demo of a IP in progress and not as a product about to be released if ever.
People also saying that they don't see this is useful. That just depends on you imaginationa and the power of the software behind said product. Besides it is in its infancy cut it some slack honestly.
@wendileona You're right in that stuff like this should never replace the real thing. But most of this can already be done in some way with a computer. You can already crop, snip, use stamps, change transparency, etc.; this just shows that you could do it more efficiently with pen and touch, though that won't always be the case. As Microsoft's own Bill Buxton would say, "Everything is best for something and worst for something else. The trick is knowing for what, when, for whom, and why."
Enough R & D already! Make a freakin product. You guys made a huge mistake axing the courier. That would have made the Ipad look like a joke. But no lets not take any risks. The market needs to be tested until nobody cares anymore.
The difference between MS and Apple is that MS does show you their developments and prototypes, whereas Apple saves it all and then shows it in one "magical" product. Honestly, I prefer having the insights in development even though they can not be bound to a "magical" product yet. And besides, this is shown on the MS Surface and its also possible to do this on the Dell XT2. Just have patience :) it will come to your home one day
anyone who uses any creative software suite knows that the key to working fast is using Keyboard shortcuts+pointing device (mouse, wacom tablet etc).
Ive been using Maya since Maya4.5, AutoCAD since vs 2006 for design and 3D viz work. I did an internship editting mocap data and QT for crowd simulation package Siggraph 2001. So i do have a little bit of a clue.
Damn, I thought (even though I'm only 15) that if I stayed focused on computers, that I could keep up with my kids one day. But now you see that our minds just wont be open enough to understand/remember all of these SIMPLE features that would make perfect sense to a fresh mind (Infant) but nothing to us, because we will have developed a more narrow mind lacking imagination.
I don't get why they need to make this so close to reality... Why do the notes have to look like real post-its? Why do pictures have to look like real polaroids? When i rip a piece of paper in half it looks like shit. I don't want to rip a virtual piece of paper in half so that it looks like shit. All of this "realism" is useless... otherwise, great stuff.
I like the direction this is going. However, it is FAR from usable as it is, I would even consider it inferior to using a desktop computer with a mouse. But someday I hope to see the real good stuff that we are shown in movies come to reality, eg mass used holographic touchscreens.
This is very cool. It seems like a more visual/creative tool, so its lack of mobility doesn't bother me. Some of the stuff seems trivial/gimmicky, but there's so many different movements and combinations with pen+touch that I'm not surprised. I'd run out of ideas too.
I think the problem with this technology is mobility (or lack thereof). Don't get me wrong, I love this, pen+touch does seem really obvious and intuitive. But look at the size of that screen, it takes 2 hands to operate to the fullest potential. We live in an increasingly mobile world, as great as this technology is, I don't think I would buy it, because it can only be used in one place.
a real nice tools to design.. it's gonna be a hit i think.. a very creative way to combine using stylus and touch.. but i think it will be better if we can use it in many more ways.. :)
@Greeneyeskater93 My uncle is an artist/sketch designer and I showed him this and he flipped out with excitement! You see what you see, I see an evolution in art/design technology. Great use for architectures, video game designers, animation, a new way to present a power point, data logging... come on man. Use your imagination when it comes to this king of technology!
i think this is how touch will get into the desktop. mobile phones = iphone, mobile computer =tablet/ipad, desktop something like this.. maybe not on table top, maybe angled a bit up but something like this would be nice for a desktop computer..
No one ever talks about smudging all of this after about 10 minutes of usage from oil from fingers and more importantly the damage to the fingers skin by rubbing it all the time will lead to some nice problematic nerve damage.
@SuperSexyCommando whoa, i've been using Tablet and Touch for 10 years now and I can promise you that me and all of my fingers are doing just fine. ROFL
I like it, but a finer detail would be nice especially for the note pads, from your demonstration it looks like you could get maybe 3 words on one, but I'm sure there is probably a way to make the pen smaller
Ever since I saw the Courier videos, I knew that anyone who was developing touch and eschewing the pen completely in the process (I'm looking at you, Steve Jobs!) was doing it wrong.
As for any complaints about the pen in this video, remember that it's just a stylus that emits light from the tip when pressed on, not much unlike one of Johnny Chung Lee's Wiimote hacks. Imagine the possibilities that would result if Wacom's pen technology was used...
Or give adobe the resources they need to make an Illustrator or Photoshop lite version for the Currier. I want this to design concepts when i'm not on my desktop.
Looks amazing but it doesn't seem very user intuitive. I take it you'd need to get through a tutorial or quick-start guide to know what hand/pen combination will do what you want it to do. Copying and stapling for example, couldn't it have been done more user intuitively with just the fingers instead of using finger + pen?
