Blizz is smart enough to check logs for everyone 10+ million characters so if someone sends mail to a friend they know about. if you get hacked and sell all ur items then Blizz would check the logs

Truth: No gold buying, acct sharing, or leveling services - and I had updated virus protection. I should've changed my password more often and/or had an authenticator. Oh well, serious lesson learned.

Rare? Really? I got hacked after falling for a phishing e-mail (lesson learned on that front) and Blizzard unfroze my account and refunded most of my gold and items within a few days. Friends that I played with who were hacked also had their items replaced, even things taken from the guild bank. They may have had to wait a few days but I've never heard of Blizzard refusing to refund gold or items unless the account holder deliberately broke their ToS.
My account has been hacked a couple of times by playing on cyber nets. Blizzard replaced my gear every time without fail. I must say that they are pretty fair when it comes to this type of thing. The time it takes is around 2 days at most.

A dead account of mine was hacked. The gold farmers used it as a prime farming account. I walked in on them and recieved a couple free expansions and about 200k gold in mats.
so in turn it is almost immpossible to be hacked Note DO NOT USE UR EMAIL FOR OTHER SITES IF ITS YOUR WOW ACCOUNT EMAIL use a diff email for personal stuff keep ur wow email completely issolated from other logins online (helps alot) you lose your email and it gets hacked they can take any account associated to it
blizz made a new log in system as of middle of wrath to prevent hacks, if somone logs onto ur account on a diff ip that isnt normaly used for your acccount the person logging in has to know the secret question your full name associated to the account and email address and password and has to reset the password via email and securety question and also has to be the first one the logg on its a new system used by blizz hence why i dont care for an authenticator

I got hacked back in BC and the worst kind of hacking, somone went on my account and transfered my 5 70s to a dupe account and i never did any bad services and Blizz couldnt do anything since they were transfered to a diff account... then i found the email adress asociated to the account i even talked to the owner of my characters and he said his freind gave me the account... those who get hacked and loss there stuff TRY LOSING UR CHAR IN WHOLE
Don't click on login links from emails, send scam emails to sites like spamcop or phishtank, use Google's "report web forgery" feature (it's part of Firefox's menu, but you can find it online by yourself), don't download programs from strangers and that includes stuff advertised on Youtube videos, like gold generators, keygens and such. It's ALL trojan horses that steal your private data. Report those videos, even if it's just a drop into the ocean.
When my account got hacked I got ALL of my items back I mean ALL of them. I even got extra! I got the items I posted from the Auction House too. I got all my gear everything and when I got it I was soo happy.

I just got hacked. Blizz was great, it only took 2-3 days for them to reinstate my characters, they gave back everything that was sold off and even let me keep the seahorse that my hacker got. lol Problem was that it was on my cousin's computer. She held it together while talking to bliz, but she was still so pissed anyway (worried about key loggers) that I ended up deleting my toons anyway. Maybe I'll create alow lvl and keep it there. No reason to hack someone who has nothing. sigh
I think the comprimisation of your computer that was the real crime. Everything within the game belongs to the game developer/owners. At any point they can terminate your contract etc.

Bliz does this all the time. You are a smart guy so this will come as no surprise - they just look at the IP login and if the location from the hacked login is different than the normal logins, they restore the account. Of course using a proxy could aid a person trying to fake a hack, but saying that most wow players know how to use a proxy is quite a stretch.
The Items do not belong to the player, even though virtual, they still belong to Blizzard, which is why Real world trading, is illegal for Runescape and world of warcraft and a ton of other games... So, You couldn't call the police if your items were stolen on the game, only Blizzard could, which is an completely unnecessary act.
You cannot call the FBI because the items that were stolen from your account are not your own intellectual property.

My account has been hacked a couple of times by playing on cyber nets. Blizzard replaced my gear every time without fail. I must say that they are pretty fair when it comes to this type of thing. The time it takes is around 2 days at most.

blizz made a new log in system as of middle of wrath to prevent hacks, if somone logs onto ur account on a diff ip that isnt normaly used for your acccount the person logging in has to know the secret question your full name associated to the account and email address and password and has to reset the password via email and securety question and also has to be the first one the logg on its a new system used by blizz hence why i dont care for an authenticator

on saying that ive had to change my names accounts detilas ect - blizzard did manage to get all of the items and gold that was taken away since then ive had no problems with my account.

I got hacked back in BC and the worst kind of hacking, somone went on my account and transfered my 5 70s to a dupe account and i never did any bad services and Blizz couldnt do anything since they were transfered to a diff account... then i found the email adress asociated to the account i even talked to the owner of my characters and he said his freind gave me the account... those who get hacked and loss there stuff TRY LOSING UR CHAR IN WHOLE
i still play the game but i do miss those 5 70s

Don't click on login links from emails, send scam emails to sites like spamcop or phishtank, use Google's "report web forgery" feature (it's part of Firefox's menu, but you can find it online by yourself), don't download programs from strangers and that includes stuff advertised on Youtube videos, like gold generators, keygens and such. It's ALL trojan horses that steal your private data. Report those videos, even if it's just a drop into the ocean.

I just got hacked. Blizz was great, it only took 2-3 days for them to reinstate my characters, they gave back everything that was sold off and even let me keep the seahorse that my hacker got. lol Problem was that it was on my cousin's computer. She held it together while talking to bliz, but she was still so pissed anyway (worried about key loggers) that I ended up deleting my toons anyway. Maybe I'll create alow lvl and keep it there. No reason to hack someone who has nothing. sigh

I got my account hacked several times (gold farmer) and the last time I was permanetly banned. Well I called the support and after 10 minutes or so of arguing, then un-banned my account. Most of my stuff was gone, like armour and weapons in my bags. I asked a GM to put it all back and sure enuff he did. Then I asked him if i could see some of his GM powers, but he said they were to busy. Pretty cool though

Bliz does this all the time. You are a smart guy so this will come as no surprise - they just look at the IP login and if the location from the hacked login is different than the normal logins, they restore the account. Of course using a proxy could aid a person trying to fake a hack, but saying that most wow players know how to use a proxy is quite a stretch.

The Items do not belong to the player, even though virtual, they still belong to Blizzard, which is why Real world trading, is illegal for Runescape and world of warcraft and a ton of other games... So, You couldn't call the police if your items were stolen on the game, only Blizzard could, which is an completely unnecessary act.
