  • I had the privledge of seeing "Mame" with the original cast. The only way I can describe Bea Arthur's Tony-winning performance is that she didn't really walk onto the stage. She strapped it on, and used it like Annie Oakley used a six-shooter!

    She was the BEST!!!

  • I have tears in my eyes....I'll miss you her so much

    :-)

  • Love it!!!

  • I remember seeing this "live" at the Hollywood Bowl. Love you, Bea! My hero!!

  • Apparently someone doesn't appreciate good theater.

  • Awesome!!

  • The song "Man in the moon" was written to the tune of "I've written a letter to daddy" sung by Betty Davis in "What ever happened to Baby Jane."

  • Bea Arthur is a tour de force! We love you always dear Beatrice:) Lance in beautiful Bremerton, Washington

  • HAHAHAHA...Sondheim could've...haha...

  • I'm Italian and maybe I'm a little bit dumb... ^^ Even if I can understand English I didn't get the joke about the rimes with Mame or Vera... Could anyone explain it to me?

  • Bea Arthur played the role of Vera in Herman's musical "Mame." Vera and Mame were "bosom buddies" each trying to outdo the other with outlandish things. Bea's joke was her recollection of the musical being called "Vera," not "Mame"

  • Yes, I know, but Vera rhymes with what? That's the point of the joke, isn't it?

  • Right. Vera rhymes with.... hardly anything. It was easier for Herman writing lyrics to rhyme with Mame (name, same, fame), so Mame "won" and got top billing instead of Vera. Her tongue-in-cheek follow-up comment was that even Stephen Sondheim could have have found words to rhyme with Vera, and perhaps if he'd written the musical, Vera (Bea) would have gotten top billing.

  • lmao, i love that!

  • Very nice clip of Bea Arthur. Would like to know what show this was and what year. Didn't Bea Arthur also do the Man in the Moon in the Lucille Ball movie, "Mame"?

  • Yup

  • She played Vera on Broadway opposite Angela Lansbury (who was Mame, rhymes with ... well you know) ... and yes she sang this song ... but in fact Herman wrote it for Hello, Dolly (Act II, the Harmonia Gardens scene) and then dropped it. He used to do it in a nightclub act at Provincetown with Charles Nelson Reilly. But Bea introduced it to Broadway.

  • I saw a play of hers around six years ago.

She dropped the F-bomb and got a standing ovation!

That pretty much says it all. Not many left like Bea! I adore her!

  • Her voice cracks a couple of times, but she carries it off with dignity. She's funny as always, though.

  • she is wonderful!!

  • o my god! o love this lady very much! she is the real actress!

  • Yeah, Bea! Love the hat!

  • Love this lady! Her one-woman show was fabulous!

  • Great moment, so funny!

PLEASE say you are going to post Rita Moreno and Leslie Uggams doing "Bosom Buddies?!!!

  • Although I am a huge Reba fan, Bea Arthur is still one of the best actresses of all time!! She is truly a comical person. I love this song, especially when she sings it in the movie Mame. I must tell you, if you ever get the chance to watch it, DO! It is one of my all time favorite movies!!!!

  • I think I saw this at the Hollywood Bowl years ago. She's an icon.
