  • Derek Watkins must surely be one of THE greatest trumpeters the UK has ever produced. "Benny Goodman Live in Stockholm" was the first record (and double LP) I ever bought in my late teens, and Derek's solo performance on "Willow Weep for Me" still makes the hair stand on the back of my neck over 35 years later. That album is STILL the best record I have ever bought! I think I'm about to start enlarging my DW collection!

  • Wow! What a player. Wonderful rendition of a fabulous song!

  • Great artist, very smooth interpretation!

  • youtube -> yves paquet - mcarthur park

  • Thank you YouTube for introducing me to Derek Watkins! And god bless that he's still very much alive and performing at his peak! Usually, my new discoveries of old timers are either dead or retired. His rendition of "Remembering Chet" at the John Barry Memorial Tribute on June 20, 2011, at the Royal Albert Hall, was what brought me here!

  • FREAKIN AWSOME FLUGLEHORN. and the trumpet is very epic

  • First time I ever heard this man play and amazed that he is not more well known.I put him on my favs list and hope to hear more.

  • Wonderful! Derek Watkins is probably the best trumpet/flugelhorn player ever in the UK but hardly known outside the jazz/big band world.

  • @petergmo63 pretty much everyone will have heard him play many times without knowing it.... James Bond, Chicago etc

  • @JoshyDude15

    C D E F G A Bb C D Eb, for trumpet transpose a whole step up - it is is basically a C mixolydian scale landing on a Eb

  • Thank you Sir!

  • and I'm meant to be playing the solo at 3:07 in Trafalgar Square.

    FFFFUUUUU----

aside from that, Derek Watkins is made of genius.

  • making the trumpet players in the background in the james last orchestra look like beginners this man, pretty awesome, soft and yet powerful - that's the spirit.

  • WONDERFUL

  • amazing *o*

  • great..

  • 7:24 What a scale!!!!!

  • 7:24 What a scale!!!

  • Znakomity trębacz...

  • i'd expect no less from the master himself, hands down

  • Adooooooooooooooooro!!!!!Nos faz viajar no tempo,lindo!!!!

  • This is how good you can get with constant practice from the age of 4 onward. I wish I had that kind of time on my hands.

  • I prefer for the piece to arrive at the up tempo quicker. I think his Trumpet playing was better than Flugelhorn.

  • Ahh i just love Derek's Tone quality I just really think he has alot more control and adds more emotion to his music than Maynard does. Derek is truly a great player and has inspired me for a future playing trumpet

  • Sweet flugel...but, my god, such a pale comparison to Maynard, RIP.

  • who are the 14 people who had bad aim and missed the like?

  • I don't have as much opinion about who's better on this song. both Maynard and Derek are great on this song. there's no question about it.

  • hello lokk of my list for video..please

  • Lol. It never ceases to amaze me with Derek Watkins. I'm there thinking to myself, "Right- he can't POSSIBLY hit the note that's about to come up!" And then he goes and plays a note a fifth above it!

TRULY extraordinary: the things he can do with brass instruments is not human.:-)

  • Absolutely Brilliant.

  • I have much respect for Derek Watkins. I think he is better than Maynard ever was.

  • quelle trompetiste ce derek!!!

  • i hate to be one of those guys, but the doc's version is just so much better

  • when did this concert take place?

  • Very dimple, some of them play a lot of notes, some of them make music. And Derek is making music

  • Derek Watkins ---- Mr. Lead

  • JAMES LAST- MAcARTHUR PARK"

  • Que Precioso. Precious. Thanks for the MUSIC.

  • WOW! Just taken up flugelhorn after 10 year break from trumpet. This man's breath control is astonishing.

  • super trompetitste

    quelle finesse et classe

    un des meilleures au monde

    bravo l'artiste

  • Nice. But the more I hear other trumpeters do this song, the more I appreciate Maynard Ferguson's stamina and chops.

  • I think Derek Watsons playing is more fluid and has a better tone than maynard. Maynard can get those high notes but probably couldn't play a song as sweet as Derek does

  • @meaksam Derek Watson is good. However, when he's impersonating Maynard Ferguson songs, he doesn't have anywhere close to the tone that Maynard had.

In Maynards time, videos werent really big, and so almost every single video of Maynard is right before his death -- which, albeit great, is not anywhere near his prime. Look up "Maynard Ferguson Maria" and you'll see how amazing Maynard was. Derek will never really match him.

  • i would love to end my high school career by playing this song

  • you mean college. Sorry but this is a huge piece.

  • just for school dip wad...its not like im gonna go play it for events...hater

  • So you don't care how you sound?

  • of course i do...but just cuz a piece is hard doesnt mean tht u cant play it.sure if you dont practice then you wont play it, but i practice everyday when i dont have essays

  • Derek Watkins in the fluherhorn!!!!

    Thanks for posting

    AMAZING !!

  • impresionante

  • Wow Dad, amazing. I could listen to this forever xxxx

  • Great...no other word

  • Great ... no other word

  • best bit is 5:20 on wards great trumpet playing

  • Great stuff! Brilliant!! I could listen to this over and over...

  • Just brilliant!!!

    vlado is der beste

  • genau meine meinung!!!

  • koennte das jeden tag hören...

  • MacArthur Park... a piece of music so melancholy, beautiful and full of tremendous emotion. thank you

  • fantastico, trompetista alemao detonando.

  • is there a note sheet of the trumpet part?

  • Derek is einfach ein Hammer..Wonderful

  • Brilliant !! loved this! D Watkins plays it so well!

  • Does anyone know what mouthpiece Watkins is playing in this song?

I think it is a Bach 3C, but I'm really not sure...

  • Gardineli 7s (old version)

  • Brilliant performance.

Where are the instrumentalists of that calibre in popular music today? I fear the skill required to interpret a melody like that has been lost forever.

  • I would urge you to look away from the charts music, and more towards the youth music of today- so many of them perform with such depth that can evoke such great things!

  • Ok, Gibby, please give us some names, links so we can see, thanks.

  • I havnt got videos, but I do stuff across london and the south, and the depth and passion of young musicians these days is greater than ever. Come see some of the music college big bands, or some of the big bands in west sussex and hampshire! we all put our heart and soul into it! I myself am 17, and live for performances like this, and big band music sets something errupting in me! so passion is mostly not dead in the music of the young!

  • its not completely gone. its just not as popular. which is sd. cuz its some of the best music ever made.

  • Ooh! I like this flugelhorn version.

Watkins and Ferguson both have great interpretations but I prefer the Doc Severinsen version. :) Check it out! Screaming trumpet notes that makes you crap your pants :D

  • Shit ..Derek !!! man ..you realy can play ..i love that !!!!

  • What is the full name of the person who arranged this version? This would be SPECTACULAR at half time, arranged for marching band, of course. mjp

  • You know, the most impressive aspect about this legend is the seamless switching between exceptional, lyrical, beautiful flug playing to total powerhouse mastery on the Trumpet in the same number. Control and clarity is out of this world. Inspires mortals like me to stop complaining about how difficult the horn is and just blow the thing.

  • Spot on dude, spot on.

  • Derek Watkins hat auch in the good old Germany seine Fans. Ich bin total begeistert und höre Ihn

    regelmäßig bei you tube.

  • i agree with dirk... beatiful song!

  • entitled to your opinion, but judging by the comments you are in the minority on this one .....

  • dont get me wrong, the sound is nice and everything but its not the best version ever

  • I beg to differ.

  • One of the best versions I ever heard. For real.

Derek Watkins is one of the best trumpet player ever! He can not only play high and strong. He s got the whole feeling. The Flüglhorn-Part is soo damn beautiful. Its like he is telling a story and only REAL musicians can give people such feelings.

A lot respect for him and his playing!

  • best version of that song ever

  • How have I never heard of this guy until now?!?!

Something is wrong with this picture.

    He's amazing!!!

  • screeched it at the end but still amazing

  • I very like Derek Watkins

  • @SteffenFausA Dem ist nichts hinzuzufügen . 1 a

  • why would any person try to make a cake outdoors!

  • that's why it took so long to bake it

  • brilliant!

  • mr lead indeed.

  • I have to be honest, normally

i don't really care for Derek Watkins, but his version of the song in this video is awesome! I generally don't like him cause he seems really detached from the music itself, but I believe he really was feeling the music here, not just playing it. My respects and props to you, Mr. Watkins.

  • anyone have music for this? including the solo???

  • BEST TRUMPET PLAYER EVER! OMG O_o

  • This is ABSOLUTE The best ever. Who has negative reactions to this let's hear him play this live.

This is pure emotion on the merits. And even though he had to re-sit for the last upper C it's still the world's best live performance of this piece.

I would give anything to hear that live .

SO JAMES , I'm going to the concert in MAY this year in Belgium Please get DEREK FOR that SOLO on the show. PLE......A.............SE.

And I ( not only me) will be the most lucky guy on this planet .

" EMBRASSEZ QUI VOUS VOUDREZ"

  • Love Derek Watkins

  • hes veeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeery nice^^

but trumpet part is toooo hard...

  • Man he is the lead

  • Where is Donna Summer?

  • Having played this myself back in the 70s- 80's and you have ot remember the composition is changed forthe flug vs a hi octane trumpet section. James Last was known for this style ... and the song isadapted for this performance as you hear. Maynard (rip) and others were just fantastic in their own way. Am sure Bill Chase performance would be unique too (rip)

  • This was pretty good, don't get me wrong, but in my opinion, this song has to scream!!! Watkins's version has excellent musicality, and Maynard's is very exciting and high, but my personal preference is Wayne Bergeron's version from the MF tribute concert. It had both aspects rolled into one package

  • Just awesome...

  • Derek Watkins é o principal trompetista da Orquestra James Last ( nome artístico do maestro alemão Hans Last )

  • Yes, James Last is German

  • All i can say is 6:39 to 6:46 WOW

  • @dmelv

jeah i was like WTF too

  • fantastico, incrível performance do trompetista alemão Derek Watkins.

  • I remember from way back seeing a one off tv show of a band called Nelsons Column that Derek used to play with along with many of the absolute greatest sessioneers of the time. It must have been late 70's at a guess. The show was presented by Spike Milligan. It featured amongst other numbers a rendition of 'we've only just begun', the Carpenters tune and Derek was absolutely stunning. I wish someone could post that original TV show. Does anyone else remember it?

  • which is it? :D

  • Derek plays on a Giardinelli 7S. But its the OLD version not the new, which is not in production. They will, at much expence, reproduce one on special order.

  • phenomonal.

  • I want the notes to this!! Someone help me out!

  • no! the last one is a high C. :D

at his first try at the end he played a high G. but the last is a c...!!

  • maybe he has a homepage where you could contact him?

  • Does anyone know a way to contact Derek Watkins? Email him or something of that sort? I am doing a project on him and would love to ask him a few questions directly if thats even possible. If anyone can help me please do!

  • I have his business partners email address, Richard Smith if thats any help. He contacts Derek if I have a question, the last one was about the mouthpiece he uses on trumpet..

  • I also like the part at the end better then the part with flugelhorn, but mussically this part is also good ;)

    @ midnightman991:

i think you haven't heard the last 2 or 3 minutes of these song on trumpet, because then you wouldnt say that it is a "relaxing version" :D

  • This is a very relaxing version of the song, personally I don't like Maynard's version. This version is ok, but I like flashy excitement and beautiful pitched high A's and such so I like Doc's much much much more. But this is much more playable for people without high ranges, and people who can solo...

  • didn't listen to the whole thing did ya? the man is a monster of the horn!!!!

  • high C at the end there btw

  • that's a G

  • did you not listen to the end?

  • Just to put a balance to the comments, Both players have given the industry individuality and excellence that would be difficult to surpass. Listen to and enjoy both of them, hero's to anyone that has ever picked up a Trumpet/Flugel or Cornet. Have been and always will be my idols...........

  • Derek Watkins is awesome. Maynards not bad but personally i like Derek Better. I feel like Maynard is to much of a visual entertainer then an actual musical entertainer. But they are both great players

  • I love Maynard's flair for flash and excitement, but he really abuses his chops to barely squeeze out those high notes.

Derek has a much more musical and sustainable technique. His highs come from "down deep", and overall his playing has more depth.

  • just for the record.Derek was fired by Maynard for playing higher and lounder than him.

You should here him play a beautiful cornet slow melody. There is nothing this man can't do on the trumpet/cornet/flugel.And he's a very very nice man.

  • wow your comment just shows that you have no musicality whatsoever. maynard ferguson only knows how to scream and that's it.

  • if all maynard ferguson could do was scream then please explain to me why he has so many fans who look up to him which include his own players and why there are so many tributes to him.

  • people look up to him because of his range on the trumpet. as far as playing actual music, derek watkins surpasses maynard ferguson because derek watkins add musical lyrics that flow. you can see that by him using the flugelhorn for the ballad part of the piece. if all you're looking for is range when comparing this version and maynard's version then yes maynard ferguson is better. but MUSICALLY, this version is completely blows ferguson out of the water.

  • i can understand you saying that most people look him up because of his range. but you still havent explained to me why there are so many tributes to him. there are tons of other people who can scream, but they sound like shit. besides that there are MANY PROFESSIONSAL PLAYERS who admire his playing and consider him to be a god of the trumpet.

  • i'm tired of going back and forth with someone who doesn't know what music is. it's obvious you can't see that derek watkins' version has more dynamics and musicality compared to maynard's version with the dynamics of loud and louder, so i'm just gonna stop this nonesense and say that you're entitled to your opinion but be respectful when you voice it.

  • i can accept that. we obviously have two completely different opinions on music which we are both entitled to.

  • I have this video at home. How many of the original members are still performing?

  • best song ever heard!!

  • Are flugelhorn fingerings the same as Bb trumpet fingerings.

  • yes

  • yep

  • nope.

  • (just kidding, for the sake of disagreement)

  • NO!

  • Awesome

  • Derek just sells this solo. It is amazing his control and tone in this solo. I think this is definitely one of the best virtuoso performances of any trumpet player!

  • as a trombone player I have to say when I hear this I wish I'd have learned trumpet!

  • Very nice, but derivative.
