The Titanic Museum in Branson, Mo. will host its 3rd Annual Wood Carving event on Oct. 8-10, 2010. Have you heard of the LogHoggers? They are a huge group of wood carvers who travel the country!
We also have a guy in the area that does this he will take a tree that was toppled in your yard by a storm or on purpose and turn it into a work of art so cool

We had a guy in my area that did this. he uses a special chain on a Husqvarna saw.
