  • In thosedays ,I got invited in the dutch embassy The Netherlands ...tie...costume and everything.

    The Ambassador wore nikes and sat on the ground while we had to take place on luxury sofa's...

    When it came to art and so...I asked him if he knew Genesis: he said : "follow me" and in his music room we had a ball with Eleventh Earl of Mar and the whole wind and wuthering, so I trew my tie away...while the others were sitting there.We nearly missed the dinner BUT shared ART-and-Music!

  • woow you are lucky while in the other side of globe at mid 70 not too many knew them and share the music.. prog rock. Now my daughter listen them. I alway enjoyed this ALBUM.

  • Genesis never was "a popular" band.Progrock has a different audience as you said yourself. Indeed it's a good memory to see "a person with very high status" running around in his nikes and talk about the simple things of life, like we do now.

    It made me realize that the higher one is in society ...the better and the more careful they are able to listen to the world.

  • I'm not sure if I'm understanding the argument over Hackett vs. Stuermer. In the first 60 seconds we see a guitarist that appears to be Daryl Stuermer - he stance is more upright and mobile than Hackett's. Subsequently, it is without a shadow of a doubt, Steve Hackett all the way. So 2 different performances here, at least.

Now to address the matter- It is Stuermer in the opening live sequence, it is a show from Oakland in 1984. And yes it is Hackett the rest of the way..um..obviously - no secret there.

  • You guys do realize that the footage here is put together from different sources, right? Obviously, the intro is taken from a more recent show (hence the varilights, probably from the 83/84 tour as stated below, where the intro of this song was played in the old medley) - and then the rest of the song is from an older performance (which is why we see/hear Steve).

  • Exactly but some people just don't listen or don't know the difference between Daryl and Steve. The rest of the video (not live) is a promo from Wind & Wuthering.

  • Peter, I too have seen Hackett from 15 feet (GTR-Chicago 1986). This is Hackett here, not Daryl.

  • It is not! Nevermind that I can tell the difference in sound ( Hackett did the slide faster and with delay), look at the Vari lights. No such lights existed in 77.

  • Here's one clue. Daryl played the glisando or slide sound slower,like this. Second, they are using vari lights which weren't used until 82 on the ABACAB tour. Hackett left in 77. Nice try though....

  • Hi Peter, promise you that is Hackett. I have seen Hackett from no more than 15 yards on his Les Paul Gold Top hooked into a Roland guitar synth (watch him kick the pedal in on the octave drop 30 secs in) and I'll nae forget that sound.

    Daryl first played with Genesis at Knebworth in '78 after Then There Were Three. Eleventh Earl was dropped from the set by then and I believe it has never appeared on a Genesis set since - there butt naked and ready to be shot down in flames...

  • Magnificent, spine-chilling ending.

  • A lot of old Genesis songs had that musical change to a different kind of musical part where you could feel "it goes right down inside of your soul" (to quote them from "Supper's Ready")... They had so much to offer. The slower musical part coincides with the lyrics because the Earl of Mar is transforming and deciding he isn't a war monger... This song could easily apply to a lone U.S. soldier in Iraq after he was in battle and fallen down a hill. Old Genesis rules!!!

  • First Genesis show I saw was in the fall of 1978, Hackett had recently left the band, Daryl Stuermer has joined as it was the "And Then There Were Three" tour. They opened with this tune. To this day, one of the best shows I've even seen. Large pivoting mirrors above the stage with the 747 lights above (as seen around 6:16-20 on this clip. Nobody was doing that at the time except these guys. Phil's voice was so strong. Thanks for the quality post.

  • Genesis music upto the early 80's was pure quality some music critics look back and say its self indulgence and pretentious well it certainly beats some emo strumming 3 chords most of todays bands are nothing more than manufactured shite the likes of this band are true musicians although i do hope they don't release any new material.

  • Pretentious? Who are these critics, their opinions are worthless. It certainly wasn't pretentious for its day. Right along the lines of brilliance of their contemporaries such as Yes and Pink Floyd. (don't really care for them post Steve Hackett however)

  • there was no intent to deceive here, I made this music video to appear as a promotional video. With lip-synched music videos as part of the main culture now it's unbelievable that some people still can't realize that is what's being done here. Think classic VH1.

    *footnote - the 'soundstage' sequences are originally lip-synced for Japanese television and not live. The only real live sequence here is the opening.

  • That's such a close call that one. But Banks wouldn't have worked in Yes and Wakeman wouldn't have worked in Genesis.

  • Tony's sounds are awsome I like them all a lot but technically Wakeman is superior.

  • I agree Rick Wakeman could run up and down scales a lot faster than Banks; but, who cares? Banks was more about the song. He had a fair amount of classical chops. Wakeman could never match the level of complexity of "One For the Vine" for example.

  • Even if you are not the youngest genesis fan, the true will still love your energy. I am now in my thirties, but I was 14 or 15 when I truly began to love Genesis. Granted I remember Invisible Touch, which not is my favorite musically, but as a 9 or 10 year old something, it was still better than most all of what was happening in music between 1986-7. Anyway peace. I at least hope for a new live album from the 1970-1975 line up. In any event we'll always have the "lamb".

  • True, CC27Miller. Genesis music seemed to change with the times - In 86, I was 17 and didn't completely hate "Invisible Touch" but I knew it wasn't what I was growing up with. Genesis, Peter Gabriel, Mike & the Mechanics and Phil's solo stuff ruled the media in 1985 - 1987. Having said that, they were able to control anything they touched. Not too many bands/former and current members of a band can state that. They did what they needed to do to survive - WTG guys.

  • I was lucky enough to see The Lamb in San Diego, which was unquestionably the best concert I have ever seen. Also went to the Trick of The Tail gig at the Starlight Amphitheater in Burbank with Bruford backing up Phil on drums, which rocked. I kept going to shows up through We Can't Dance, then quit, although I even liked parts of Calling All Stations. Nowadays, it's mostly Porcupine Tree and Flower Kings for me.

  • While Gabriel and Hackett certainly did have a presence in this band when Rutherford and Banks took the lead with Abacab and Duke the new sound was quite good, albeit quite a bit less technical. One of the issues was that they could not find a drummer for a long time that could play songs like Dance on a Volcano suitably. Chester did not come along until after they had fired Bill Bruford twice.

  • The fact (& sad truth) is that the live intro isn't even Hackett playing - it's from the "And Then There Were Three" tour. It's Daryl Strummer (who can't compare with Hackett) Genesis hasn't done anything really worth a darn in over 25 years (just bits and pieces). I gave up a long time ago...

  • when hackett left, genesis died. trick and w&w were good albums, although i missed gabriel, but after those collins took over and genesis became a middle-of-the-road popband. what a waste!

  • Sure they slowed down on some of their creative, odd time signatures, and extremely complex chord changes. But their song writing abilities never went away they where just getting tired of the stuff they were doing. If you listen close you can still hear the progressive feel and the astonishing abilities shinning through in the latter albums.

    It wasn't all Collins that made the shift in direction either, it was everyone including Daryl and Chester. But most of all Time.

  • I respectfully disagree. I didn't see it as a matter of "time" or "getting tired of the stuff they were doing."  In the early '80s Genesis made an obvious, calculated decision to start writing simpler, more commercial songs for the unsophisticated masses. This was around the time Phil was doing drivel like "Easy Lover" with Philip Bailey, "Against All Odds," "You Can't Hurry Love," etc. The disappointing shift in Genesis' direction reflected Phil's increasing influence and was, IMHO, a shame.

  • Considering what a lot of prog musicians morphed into in the 1980s, I'd say that Genesis come out of it slightly better than most, at least in the first half of the decade. Up to Genesis (1983) they managed to still produce some great stuff while other artists like Mike Oldfield and Yes turned into tacky cabaret acts

  • I agree with you. I remember thinking, Phil is using Genesis as his backup band, it was totally his style taking over a great group. But also I don't think that w/Peter Gabriel would have been much different, since He also went comercial with that album: SO. There were the 80's: Reagan, comercialism, Gordon Gekko delivering his unfamous quote, "GREED IS GOOD", "GREED WORKS"...now go figure what was happening in the Music Industry at that time....

  • It's from a live performance in Oakland in 1984 and that's the only part of the song they did live, that's why that's all I used. It was part of a medley. I don't have the rest of the show.

  • Wow, nice live piece for the intro.  I had a tape once with all in a mouse's night from this tour. Awesome live! I think they really screwed up the mix on Seconds out and basically down played Steve Hacket's awesome guitar work. They did get it right on the Archives volume I live Lamb though. W & W definitely the last "great" genessis album. After that moments of greatness but nothing like before! This song still gives me chills thirty years after I first heard it!!

  • I'm glad you enjoy this footage of 11th Earl of Mar that never existed before. Shame some people can't enjoy something that they never knew existed before. That's the internet culture for some people, they see things they never saw before and still complain - a disgrace. To answer your question that beginning of the song is the ONLY live footage of 11th Earl in existence.

  • Tony Banks is God. All the people who bitch about Gabriel Vs. Collins need to understand that without Tony Banks, there is no Genesis.

    I was happy to see Genesis in Sept., regardless of whether Gabriel was there...Mr. Banks was, and therefore so was Genesis.

  • EXACTLY. Without Tony, there is no such thing as Genesis. (Or Mike, for that matter, but the way I see it, the brains of the band is Tony) I remember shouting Tony's name at the beginning and end of the Genesis a couple of months ago. He's my favorite keyboardist ever. (Besides Rick Wakeman and Keith Emerson, but IMO Tony is underrated and is #1)

  • But from what i've read, having Hackett around was (in around '71 or so) like Tony had finally found a 'sympathetic soul'(my own words). Not Banks' words, but Steve definatly was an ally in Tony's visions of grandeur.

  • No I am from Switzerland but am an American.

    I never saw the Gabriel nor Hackett era Genesis but for sure it was the best period for Genesis. They really went down hill after Hackett left and had a short revival period during the Duke tour. The last tour was nice but just too impersonal and mechanical to my taste..I would rather see them in smaller venues then these large stadiums which are totally impersonal. best

  • A pity that that whoever placed this video did not specify where the live show was filmed or shows as it seems the opening is from another concert then most of the song.

    This is the tour where Steve Hackett really EXPLODED and stood out so strongly in the music of Genesis...then he walked out..the rest is history.

  • I saw them in '78 at the Philly Spectrum. This was the first tune. Phil was running all over the stage as I recall. Me and my buds had a giant banner that said 'Squonk'. Laughs! Great show. Awesome 747 landing lights. Steve Hackett and Peter Gabriel were great live around this time too.

  • This is actually one of the best songs they ever performed live, it was the opening song for the W&W Tour. There is a live recording of it out there, I had a bootleg European "Live" album (that's vinyl record) from the early 80s that had most of W&W on it. All four of the guys were in their musical prime here, and Chester, only guy around that could perform Phil's work, beat for beat...

  • A terrific track from Wind & Wuthering and also one of my favorites. Too bad they did not have the guts to play this on the current tour in place of one of the crap songs they felt compelled to perform. Saw them in Chicago on 10/3 and they were as powerful as ever. I thought Chester's drum kicks during "Mama" were going to cave in my chest.

  • This was not done with the intent to be malicious or to deceive. Aside from the opening live intro, the intent was to make this appear as a promo video from the 70s and that's why the studio track is used, as with all promos. Most people DO understand this concept. It was my attempt to create a visual for a song that NEVER HAD A VISUAL before.

  • Yep, Robb3737 is right. You're only about 15 or 16 years off, radsoft. Nursery Cryme was the first album Phil drummed on, and it was released in 1971. And, IMHO, his best work with the band was on his first two albums in the spotlight, "A Trick Of The Tail" and "Wind And Wuthering". Some of Steve's best work on those albums, too. And, this shouldn't come as a surprise at this point, but, I think Land Of Confusion is probably the only good song on "Invisible Touch."
