  • I've always made up my own lyrics. Some of them are Grammy worthy. If I could just remember them... lol

  • The top comment has 40 likes.

  • Where was this played?

  • I'm with the people who don't want set lyrics. I just want a longer version than 45 seconds or whatever most of them are now. It's one of the most beautiful riffs ever imo.

  • "I don't know what the lyrics are...I never knew what they were," "It just popped out of you one night," "It just....blaaaahhhhh!....you know." I agree with other posters: Sing #40 with whatever words you want...we're gonna love it. Great post - thank you!

  • Anyone know where to get this concert??

  • Anyone know where to get this version or the Yoshi's concert?

  • @JujubND If you know how to torrent, sign up for antsmarching. org and go to downloads

  • After 45 shows, never heard this version... no matter how much you think you know, you learn something new every day...

  • absolutely...the greatest song ever (not really) written. says it all.

  • what documentary is the opening clip from?

  • which album was this on?

  • @slashkill556 #40 has not been released on a studio album. This version of #40 (considered by most all DMB diehards as THE #40) is from an audio tape of a radio show Yoshi's in San Francisco from the mid-90's.

I also really enjoy the Live Trax Vol. 12 version of #40. That's probably my personal favorite. Full four minute Dave Solo song.

  • @MonsterTruckManiaTV cool. thanks bro

  • I am so glad you did this, because when I saw that on the documentary, I said to myself that I should do something like this, but never did. Thanks for picking up the slack.

These lyrics have been deciphered and if he wants to see them, he can.....I was not happy to see this about the song on that show. This is, by far, the most complete and best version, hands down....and I think we all agree on that.

    So Dave, here it is.

  • Who cares if the song has no set lyrics?! Don't worry Dave, just keep making up random "Dave babble" to accompany that riff and we will all be happy.

  • I want it to end right now. Where can I get an audio MP3 recording of this take?

  • I don't care what the lyrics are just give me a version that lasts longer than 45 seconds.

  • I like the version that starts with "tables turned again, on you my friend..."

  • @shan4short agree that's my favorite one too, but like a lot of others, i don't want there to be set lyrics, i think thats a part of the mystique of this song.

  • @shan4short those lyrics have basically been set. thats always how he starts the song now. i like it too, but this version is unmatched, even by 06.21.08

  • It's Yoshi's alright...5.10.95

  • hey dickhead i suggest you change the tone of your title.. and dont even think of addressing dave in such a disrespectful manner ever again. but other than that awesome fuckin video

  • @NcStevo youre an idiot

  • i wish that i could climb, inside your mind, and spend some time in there, hug and hold you.....

  • Thank you for posting this. I ⓛⓞⓥⓔ Dave.

  • thats dave right there, he just made these lyrics in his head on the spot...thats talent right there.

  • The version everyone knows is from the Listeners Supported DVD/CD

  • @Jayrod521 uhh, no it's not?

  • I absolutely love this song. I love that Dave changes it up every time, but it's always so beautiful. Is there an audio download of this version available? Would love to have it lull me to sleep. :)

  • this is not from lillywhite...its from a live recording a long time ago

  • @irishbum11 yoshi's

  • hahthanx alex thanks for the info, but i do beg to differ on the greystrret bit... i mean they are the same lyrics yes same melody but sung in a different order. i get the point tho! thanks!

  • No one rate it, it's at 40!

  • beautiful

  • I'd give this 5 stars, but there's already "40" ratings.

  • @unvrknow22 i was gonna rate it till I read what you said

  • A friend is always good to have, but a lover's kiss is better than angels raining down on me.

  • i dont hear any clapping or cheering in this recording doesnt that mean its not in concert? maybe the fans are just in complete awe haha it is a great song

  • hey im a dave freak of nature haha so i have the answer to that question! it is on the album titled "lilywhite sessions" and its not done in a concert. but it is true he perfoms this song different every time he sings it. as well as grey street... but thats what makes him awesome is that nothing is fixed! anyway... not sure about where you can get the album shit i dunno how i even got it but its out there!

  • Hey, #40 is a much older song than that, and "THE" version that Dave (and the fans) are talking about is actually from 1995 or 1996 and is live, I forget the exact date. The one played in this video is the lillywhite sessions version. But, one thing - grey street is always sung with the same lyrics, and same structure. Some songs that change all the time are like, two steps intro, shotgun, or halloween.

  • its called the "yoshis" version, THE #40.

  • This is the BEST version. I really hope it is recorded some day so that we can have a complete version on an album

  • This song was mislabeled as Angel on one of his live albums with many of the same lyrics. Its funny I could never find the song because I didn't know it by any other title

  • this is THE EPIC yoshi with some great lyrics, but I also would never want there to be steady lyrucs to #40.. it's not he true nature of the song.... it's a song about a loves passed and how hes remembering it at the moment... it tells you a lot about dave at the time he played the song. It's wide open.. I love it anyway..

  • Live Trax 12, Salem, OR 1995 AWESOME!

  • The infamous Yoshis Broadcast, 5-10-95

  • I think I prefer the Listener Supported album version of the tune. That's just me.

  • Of course this is THE version of #40, this entire show at Yoshi's is considered one of the best of all time. But the fact that Dave is coming up with the lyrics on the spot every time he plays #40 is what people love about it and he should keep it that way.

  • someone post this on his myspace or facebook wall

  • I NEVER want this song to have steady lyrics. I love how the song's lyrics have evolved over the years. It makes every one so special. Almost like a continuing story, and I never want it to end.

  • I agree. It is perfect at about 90 seconds with the occasional new twist to the story/lyrics. It is something special

  • @RantingThespian I am right there w u! Woop Woop Endless 40...

  • million dollar riff

  • @Fromta So fun to play!

  • 4-7-1995 is the best one.

  • Fav!

  • Haha, poor Dave ;D But couldn't he just listen to it and try to figure out what he was saying? The lyrics should be the hard part. Well, the song is always amazing anyway.

  • May 10, 1995

    DMB Full Band Acoustic

On a Radio show in Yoshi's (in San Francisco I believe)

    Last song of the show.

  • The definitive version is probably yoshies

  • this is great
