You know I have some respect for Angel, because on the Magician reality show he stood up against the "psychic" for claiming he was really a psychic, Blane said he's just doing tricks.
I'm still not a fan of him in general, but I can never really dislike him.
@BatmanOneOhOne I know completely what you are saying. I don't think he has ever made a point that I haven't agreed with and it really annoys me because no matter how hard I try I cannot find a video of him saying something I disagree with.
Are you people sure he's talking about David Blaine? Earlier in this interview he praises Blaine (though he criticizes him, too) and says that the original Street Magic "is the best TV magic special ever done and really, really does break new ground." Did it occur to you he may have meant David Copperfield?
While Copperfield did once do a camera trick, it was a very, very long time ago and no one really remembers it. All his famous stunts; Flying, Portal, Vanishing the statue of Liberty etc... all of those are 'real' and not camera tricks.
Blaine however has used several camera tricks in his most famous illusions, and uses stooges in about half his tricks it seems - but often just to make the trick look 'better' than it naturally would.
I always knew there was a reason I like Penn. I'm a theater person, and people are always astounded when I say that I'm no enamored with Movies. It's for exactly the same reason as Penn has said- it's easy to do an emotionally taxing scene 50 times, and get ONE good take. It's also easy to memorize lines when you're only going to be doing that scene one day. I mainly like movies for their stories. I'm not saying that all movie actors are crap. Thanks, Penn
David Blaine uses common cheap magic shop tricks, which is why he no longer does TV magic, but rather he does endurance spectacles. Blaine is fairly good with card legerdemain, but has no real ability to perform original card tricks or close up magic that isn't available to you and I at the corner magic shop for $13 bucks. Don't disagree with me, go to your local magic shop and see for yourself.
I always liked MindFreak until I saw Criss Angel's live Vegas show. It was terrible. The tricks were terrible, the jokes were terrible. It's clear as day that his "illusions" are mere camera tricks and don't translate to a live stage show. Penn is a true magician. Criss is an actor.
I have tried to explain to an 18 year old friend of mine who thinks Christ Angel has real powers that it is camera tricks and planted people, I explained that in 1977 I saw 30 small ships fly into space and attack a giant ship and blow it up. I did not think it was real because no one claimed it was real. I bet Christ Angel could not do a real live show on a small stage.
@SubconsciousGatherer Penn once said: "the biggest break through done in our lifetime was David Blaine's 'Street Magic,' where his idea was to do really simple tricks but to concentrate... to turn the camera around on the people watching instead of the people doing. So to make the audience watch the audience, which that first special 'Street Magic,' is the best TV magic special ever done and really, really does break new ground."
I once met James Randi after a show in the 1980's. There was some great conversation and then he did the spoon melting trick for me and a couple of friends. We were all at most 2 feet away from him. No television performance could ever be compared to seeing him perform magic with nothing less than artistic perfection.
He says he has a very real sense of the things being done and how they're doing it...well, okay, he himself is a professional magician who's ALSO had a television show, so naturally he already knows HOW most of the tricks are done, and I'm sure he would have picked up on what sort of camera techniques to watch out for as well. To the average person, they're hard pressed to see the difference from one shot to the next, at least a majority of the time.
The point is that using camera tricks to accomplish the effect is cheating - it surreptitiously, without the audience being told, puts the trick into a different category where it's really competing with ILM and Weta Digital instead of traditional magic. And making a coin appear out of thin air is not impressive compared to doing the same with the Death Star or Minas Morgul.
Roar of Magic here on youtube is the only good magic show.

It freaks me out sometimes how much I agree with Penn. The fact that he's such a genuine, nice guy is just the best bonus.

I live in Vegas and seen Criss do random upclose magic and his show. His show is so-so, but the upclose stuff is amazing.
Penn and Teller's show is awesome

The fun of magic for me is seeing what they are doing, and still being fooled. Camera trick magic is no fun for me.

I enjoy illusion, performance, and comedy. There is charm in a movie, but there is no substitute for live performance.

@CairnsMC3 He's not a magician. He's an illusionist. A magician tricks people, Penn will admit how something is done.

Penn & Teller should work on a new trick for their show: making Criss Angel and David Blaine disappear for good.
