Great! Brendel, admirable pianist, satirically demonstrates here what we have known all along that Beethoven really is: empty bombast. To recover from this: listen to Brendel's heavenly interpretation of Schubert's Imprompty Op 90/3. Now THAT is a composer, THAT is music and of course, that is Brendel in all his splendour.
@lovethepiano Perhaps. Probably because Schubert had a delicate and refined personality which boorish and rude Beethoven could only dream of. As for empty bombast: listen to the ending of his 5th symphony yawningly boring (para bostezar!). As for his boorish attitude: read the history of the Diabelli variations, which Beethoven wrote to show off and humiliate Diabelli. Musical bullying I call this.

It would appear that you've contradicted yourself. I wasn't referring to the lack of decay, but to the audible "warble" of the decay, which you're pointing out to be "wow". The fact that it comes from a VHS is entirely relevant, particularly because it's from a worn-out VHS, as "wow", which is caused by jittery playback, is much more obvious on a tape that's been played over and over to the point that it becomes stretched out to some extent.
According to an article with pages upon pages about maintaining archival-quality VHS tapes: "Tape, being a long plastic ribbon, can contract and stretch
depending on temperature, humidity, cassette tightness, and
tightness of your rollers inside your VCR."
Read that section, it specifically uses the word "jitter", even. Presumably, "cassette tightness" degrades after many playbacks of the same tape.
If you think this improv is bad, you guys should hear the Stan Kenton plays Wagner album. The man has his orchestra literally "scat" Siegfried! hahahahahaha
Alfred Brendel can come over as the purist's purist until you see him skitting his pretentious colleagues like this.......!! (or as we say in Lancashire....taking the pi**!) Pure magic!!!
hilarious and brilliant. :33 is a special moment. this is much more subtle than most shreds which makes it all the more hilarious. challenging my bladder control with this....
You don't get it. He isn't parodying the music, he is parodying the pianists, both with the pedal, the fingers, the facial expressions, the stature. It is an inside joke and it is friggin hilarious.

Seriously, people! The video and the audio are not the same performance. Someone either mad genius with too much time on his hands has synced a Brendel video with a brilliant parody.
brendel is the worst pianist i have ever heard in my life - fortunately only in recording...if this is not him playing we are perhaps fortunate...i just dont understand why anyone likes him!
listen to something else from him .he's a great pianist and has played really wonderful things. This one doesn't sound good .The playing of arrau in boston is rotten for waldstein though he's a monument :))
God knows what happened to him that day.. It's like he put a bag full of money on his car roof, and than forgot about it and just drove himself to this concert
Hey wait a minute... After reading GolbalHuntMan's commment, I'm starting to feel that Alfred Brendel is quite mean. Yelling at a lady in the audience just becuase she had a slight cough.....
he's not the only one - Keith jarrett's even worse. I can't understand why people so entwined with the spirit of music can feel so dispirited - I also get frustrated when i see grumpy music teachers...WTF!!!! It's like having anorexic restaurant critics - why would you do the job???????????.
I don't know how willing he would be to join in on the laughter. He's a pretty mean-spirited guy. At a concert of his I attended, he stopped playing to yell at and completely humiliate this frail old lady all because she had a slight cough. She started to cry and then got up and left the auditorium.
Sorry you had this experience. Seems like he's given everybody that showstopper, he did it at Chicago at a concert I attended also. We should check to see whether it's the same old lady! you never know when people need a crutch! But seriously, he can get po'd sometime too though.....
Herein the combination of Beethoven's magnificent musical architecture, along with the stunning technical virtuosity of Brendel, serves to create one of the most memorable performances the concert stage has ever known. It is indeed hard to imagine a finer performance of this timeless masterpiece.
