No self-proclaimed and hypocritical fanatics who used a faith and teachings of God (whom he granted to Earth, i assume, with good intention) and destroy our freedom of speech and freedom of information would ever succeed in censoring anything! They can go F*** themselves!!
geeesh, people acting like jesus was the only guy crucified and the only holy speaker of the time. he wasn't. and jesus is mentioned a hand full of times, the movie isn't even about christ. it's actually quite common for some dude to be mistaken for the son of god back in that day which was what the movie was about
Interesting how this film came out in the year of the rise of the religious right in America and the Islamic revolution in Iran. Timing, as they say, is everything, in comedy and life.
Other thing that the bible teaches, and I believe, but I think is hard to prove,is the influence of the phisical world in one's soul.
The only physical reflection that the bible tells of the soul is a persons eyes, and the way they look at the world.
It would be interesting to measure or try to scientifically measure the "light" of the soul through the way someone looks at the world. But It is highly subjective because, from what I understand, it only reflects on certain instances.
As I have said, you are free to believe what you believe. No one can terrorize you for it. The fact of the matter is, you do not choose what you believe or disbelieve. The only choice you have in the matter is either to accept and seek evidence, or avoid and ignore it.
Imagination is a wonderful thing, and it does lead to great discoveries. This is precisely why religion will never be or help science. Faith is neither imagination or a demand for evidence. It is the opposite.
Where science seeks to understand, faith asserts. If there is any tiny bit of evidence for those claims -- great! If not -- no matter! You cannot disprove it! I have faith! God cannot be touched by such lowly human ideas like "ration" and "logic".
Oddly enough, it does not work the other way around. You'll never hear a supernaturalist accept those statements as evidence for materialism!
As long as religion is what it is now, it will be the kind of thing that any rational dreamer despises.
I didnt decide that we lack the maturity to deal with scientific tools we develop.
The antropologists and other scientists that study our civilization are the ones that aknowledge the dilema and paradox between the scientific tools we possess, and how governments and societies, in order to maintain their way of life or to seek out more power, can destroy their ecossistem, therefore, not sustain themselves.
Also, how can someone decide that Religion and Spiritual belief isnt necessary ?
Although deciding whether something is or isn't "necessary" to yourself seems kind of funny. I mean, if you stop believing you can't really make yourself go back because "it's necessary".
I dont know how your brain works, nor your heart for that matter.
I have faith more times than others. I used to not have great faith when I was a teen, but my faith grew alot when I was down and out and started to read the bible.
So i went from not necessary to necessary.
If someone who has faith suddenly was cast with a tremendous bad luck and lost someone really close, maybe that person starts to lose their faith. Going from necessary to not necessary.
I used to believe that tarot cards predicted the future. Then I learned a few things, and stopped believing it. What was 'necessary' never once crossed my mind.
Even if I had believed that believing was necessary, it wouldn't have stopped this knowledge from changing my beliefs.
It's not like I could stop in the middle of the process and say "Hey, wait. I need to believe in this, because it makes me feel more comfortable in an expanding and chaotic universe. How about we rewind a bit."
And as I said, one has to have the right to believe in what one wants, as long as it doesnt interfere with the well being of those around him, let it be by reasons of religion, money, science, christmas trees, whatver.
I just meant that it was a little silly to think of it in terms of being "necessary". Even if I thought believing in tarot cards was necessary, there's really nothing I could do to make my brain erase everything I've learned and revert back to a former state.
Self-inflicted brainwashing is all I can think of, and even that seems like it would have certain complications.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
My problem is with people calling it brainwashing.
It is your own right to not want to believe.
It is not your right to deem someone ignorant or stupid , thus self-inflicting-brainwashing, just because they believe.
Even science can be brainwashing, depending on where in history you are, which field of science are you taking for truthful, and what "common sense" is.
My point again, and this i'm sure you agree, is we must have the right to believe in what we want, even not believing.
I was trying to explain how one might go about making herself believe something if it wasn't working through any other means. Self-inflicted brainwashing doesn't even really sound possible. People don't come around to their beliefs because they think those beliefs are necessary to have -- that's why it's silly to think about it in those terms.
Also, having to assert your right to believe all the time makes you seem fearful. It takes a screwed up person to want to take that right away from you, and if it ever happens I'll be the first one to protest.
Proper science cannot be brainwashing, because science is a process -- not a belief. That process is the opposite of faith, because it encourages skepticism and demands evidence. (The opposite of brainwashing, which forces any beliefs into a person's head without any evidence or logic.
And, if I wanted to -- it is my right to call you ignorant or stupid. That is the whole point of free speech. You can call anyone you want anything you want.
It doesn't mean I will call you those things, and it doesn't mean I would be right if I did.
Hum ok, I understand the name-calling free-speech thing.
As for science, well.... Try seeing it this way.
In order to defend what theories exist, faith in something else must give way to proven evidance, like you just said.
But in order to move on, and discover new things, sometimes people have to be lead by their imagination and intuition , and let their faith and belief in those aspects take control.
After forming that idea, one needs to learn through rational thought if it is possible.
Yes, it is true that God killed people in the Old Testament. However, that was under the Old Covenant. We are currently living in the time of the New Covenant. I believe that, in this current dispensation, God will only kill wayward Christians, and, consequently, take them to Heaven.
"Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them."-Matthew 7:12
Even then, we have this little problem called hell. Just what exactly is the crime that a person is damned for? And isn't eternal torture a bit of overkill?

not really some are easily offended just by say oh my GOD
and some are forcing people to say happy holiday for merry christmas etc
the thing about uk is that there are too many religion to keep them all happy at less we don't have that nutter around to offend every religion, so in a way yes it got better
Also, many countries still have them on the books, they're just never actually applied. Ridiculous, sure, but consider them a remnant of less enlightened times.
I'm a christain and of course i don't agree with most of the stuff they do, but blasphimy..my word that lady gives us christians a bad name. No wonder the Iranian's want to rid the world of us...some christians are just as bad as the terrorists. Im just saying my mind...pleas dont get mad at me.
Well, if we truly do have free speech, we Christians should be able to say what we jolly well please. It is the pinnacle of hypocrisy that, in our supposedly politically correct times, the Christian community is the only minority group that people are permitted to ridicule.
And Muslims. And blacks. And Chinese. And gays and lesbians
For all the ridicule, we still elect them into politics, give them money, get angry when people make fun of them, and I can't throw a rock without hitting a cross.
I beg to differ. People are absolutely vilified when they make fun of Muslims, Chinese people, African-Americans and homosexuals. However, if they mock Christians, nobody bats an eyelash. That is what annoys me intensely.
I really don't see much ridicule outside of a few films like this, which is less about Christians in particular and more about mindless bigots like yourself
You beleive in the bible Theres 1 story that always made me think No theres not a chace thats true The Ark how did polar bears get there to be saved and was there big huge Water tanks on board so that 2 whales great white sharks etc Even Kangaroos Thats some journey them animals had to make across oceans to be there to be saved WOW
To be perfectly frank, I don't know very much about Greek Hellenism. However, I am 100% convinced that Christianity is true. If you don't, you have my sympathy.
You seem to be avoiding my question about why you believe in the Arab pantheon of Christianity as opposed to any other. To say 'I am 100% convinced that Christianity is true' isn't an answer, you're merely reasserting the statement which provoked the question.
Ha. youre right. I am not an aetheist but it's true. I don't see anything blasphemous about this movie. its just those crazy super christians. the only reason theyre like that is cuz theyre bloody hipocrites. wow, aren't I a cynical christian...
Atheists believe the universe created itself. The great Christian preacher Mark Driscoll rightfully stated once that nothing tends not to create very much.
"I don't know how, therefore God did it" doesn't give much confidence in the logic of whoever uses the argument.
And using "nothing created itself" to explain science is about as ignorant as Catholics devouring human flesh for communion or Africans living in dense jungles
I'm offended by the tax free status that all religious organisations have. Why dont they pay taxes???
I'm also offended by mass ignorance and the fear and lies that religion teaches. I'm offended by christian groups telling me what I can and cant watch or do.
I'm offended when these nutters tell me that Australia is a christian country when it fucking well isnt.
I agree however the reason churches don't pay taxes is because if they did they could legally have control of the government. Since the taxpayers supposedly are the ones who control the government (yeah, right), if churches were taxed, they could legally have a say... But it sure would make a shit load of money.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I can understand how my fellow believers could find the movie offensive. And it is NOT a matter of "dislike," it is a matter of deep offense. Jesus is our Lord, and His time period is important to us. Perhaps in the '70s, because non-Christians were expected to be more sensitive to Christians than they are now expected to be, there was a lot of distress. Now I have a different set of expectations for non-Christians. I just expect them to offend me, even if they don't mean to. Makes life easier:)
But people have to understnad that the movie is not about Jesus. It's about the people who followed him who didn't think for themself and ust blindly follwed one man
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
But who blindly followed him? You have obviously never read any of the gospels, for they make clear why the disciples thought Jesus was the true Messiah. It wasn't a blind following. There was evidence. But, anyway. Whatever. There are some today who blindly follow Jesus, and there are others who blindly follow atheism. I think most people probably have a lazy streak when it comes to what they believe :)
there is nothing offensive to christianity..in this movie it merely points out hypocrasy of ALL religionsin fact my favorite parts are where leftist secualr groups are ridiculed.. like the peoples front of judea
Look around. There are so many religious fanatics everywhere, none of whom think for themselves. That doesn't mean all believers are blind but unfortunately a great deal are. That's a fact. Life of Brian doesn't just go after the religious either. It also has a go at militant far-left groups who also didn't think for themselves.
the problem is that christians are so easily offended. Atheists put up with a lot of crap about religious people preaching to them but if an atheist says one thing about their beliefs christians are in uproar about teaching children atheist values.
yet christians have no problem with teaching their beliefs to kids.

Being offended...offense is a matter of how deeply and strongly you believe something. Expression of offense is a matter of perceived power and support. Atheists who believe in atheism as strongly as Christians believe in Christ are just as offended by preaching. They don't express it, because they don't perceive they have enough power/support to do so successfully (or persuasively). It's also possible that many atheists don't believe very strongly (or are ampathetic), and so aren't offended.
thank you for a balanced and well though out debate, i'm sure the atheist community has been shocked by your revelation and will therefore convert to one of the various made up religions.
forgive me for not choosing christianity as although it seems to be "true" i can't be dealing with all the bullshit that comes with it!
thanks for your recycled logic but how do you presume to know what made the universe?
science hopes to understand incredible things but we have to accept that not all these answers will be answered in our lifetime. Religious people cutting corners and guessing really doesn't help!
believe what you want but don't be narrow minded and take other people's random guesses as the gospel truth.
But I have a real problem with the idea that people can so readily dismiss the vast amount of scientific evidence for evolution and the big bang, when they apparently know nothing about it. And I find religion, quite frankly, dangerous and insane.
I think that Science vs Religion is a false issue.
Science can also be dangerous and insane, given that we as a species do not possess the maturity required to deal with such great power possessed by these knowledges.
So for me, both religion and science, and whatever other cultural elements we have, are both beneficial and dangerous, given that they are driven by the wrong motivations, in all cases, the quest for power and domination.
And one more thing. There is nothing in the Bible that disprooves Science.
In fact, one of the main advices that God gives us is to seek knowledge, even if it costs us all our gold. In the bible, true gold IS knowledge.
Any idea that God is against Science only exists in the minds of those that take Religion for what it was "sold as" by fanatical cleregy throught the ages.
This is where the Bible is entirely contradictory. Do you not find it ironic that, whilst what you said may be true, God also didn't want Adam and Eve to eat from the tree of knowledge?
God aknowledged that we did seek out knowledge. So the best that we can do is to try seek all the knowledge we can. Not only phisical and scientifical knowledge, but also spiritual.
Yeah, I would agree in general. But according to the Bible, God punished Adam and Eve for eating from the Tree of Knowledge. He kicked them out of the Garden of Eden.
Thus, "seek knowledge, even if it costs you all your silver, for it is worth more than gold".
I truly believe our scientific knowledge of the world is not in the way of our divine belief. I believe there is another realm of existance, but since we are living in this one for now, we must do what we can with what tools we can to shed light onto the darkness.
On the other hand, many men of Science ( but not Einstein for instance) rule out any notion of a God. But what science studies, exists beyond our knowledge of it. We didnt invent all these forces in Nature. We are just becoming conscious of them now. And I say God is related to that same nature. He gave us this beautiful planet to live in. A shame we are wasting it....
It isn't for anyone to decide whether we as a species lack the ability to deal with knowledge. Education is a fundamental human right.
You're right, everything can and almost certainly will be corrupted by the powers that be, but religion being used to do terrible things is a huge waste. Religion isn't necessary and whether you like it or not, science is. The only way society can progress is to discover more about our world.
If you fail to see that we as a civilization are still immature to deal with the scientific tools we have at hand, than just look at all the polution and bio.weapons we have, and look at how the greed for power is amongst those who control these tools.
It also isnt for anyone to decide that Religion isn't necessary. It is a fundamental part of our right to exercise belief and to have faith, very important in millions of people's lifes, their happiness and well being.
*LOL* OTTO THE JEWISH NAZI *LOL* -> just look at how Israel is trying to put into practice the Nuremberg racist laws ... DAMN why did they delete this character ... British humor at it's truest!
Wow, I had no idea that it caused so much controversy!
Anyone who is that freaked out by an innocent comedy film needs to grow up and get a life. It's frigging insane, especially that they'd have to take out a will!
Especially since it parodied only the most militant Jews (of the first century) and portrayed Jesus as actually performing miracles, preaching, etc.
I'm starting to think that the best way to end these problems is to go iconoclast and simply forgo art relating to religious figures (especially since the more blasphemous stuff is more accurate: At least Brian keeps his yarmulke)
as a Christian pastor, I think life of brian is one of the funniest films ever and is spot on with the micky taking that it does on religion in general. Although my church may not agree with me, but i say, well done monty python.
Me too. I really wished that scene were in the movie.
And the end, where Otto goes to "save" Brian, that was bizarre because it seemed like, "Here's this samurai army out of nowhere?" This deleted scene explains it, and is !bonus! ridiculously funny.
And that's right, it's wrong to "skewer" different religions differently. Unfortunately, society views certain religions with different sensitivities. Judaism (and somehow the gov't of Israel is sacred too), Islam, all those are pretty touchy. :(
why is religion so untouchable? i will laugh at any religion i want until its proved factual.

Well, if we truly do have free speech, we Christians should be able to say what we jolly well please. It is the pinnacle of hypocrisy that, in our supposedly politically correct times, the Christian community is the only minority group that people are permitted to ridicule.
Samalamalamdam 2 years ago
And Muslims. And blacks. And Chinese. And gays and lesbians
For all the ridicule, we still elect them into politics, give them money, get angry when people make fun of them, and I can't throw a rock without hitting a cross.
Tareltonlives 2 years ago
I beg to differ. People are absolutely vilified when they make fun of Muslims, Chinese people, African-Americans and homosexuals. However, if they mock Christians, nobody bats an eyelash. That is what annoys me intensely.

Atheists believe the universe created itself. The great Christian preacher Mark Driscoll rightfully stated once that nothing tends not to create very much.

"I don't know how, therefore God did it" doesn't give much confidence in the logic of whoever uses the argument.

I'm also offended by mass ignorance and the fear and lies that religion teaches. I'm offended by christian groups telling me what I can and cant watch or do.
I'm offended when these nutters tell me that Australia is a christian country when it fucking well isnt.

TwoOpposableThumbsUp 3 years ago 6
I agree however the reason churches don't pay taxes is because if they did they could legally have control of the government. Since the taxpayers supposedly are the ones who control the government (yeah, right), if churches were taxed, they could legally have a say... But it sure would make a shit load of money.

Makes life easier:)
freeindeed7 4 years ago
But people have to understnad that the movie is not about Jesus. It's about the people who followed him who didn't think for themself and ust blindly follwed one man

It's also possible that many atheists don't believe very strongly (or are ampathetic), and so aren't offended.
freeindeed7 3 years ago
Christianity is true. Atheism is horse dung. That's why.

Quite frankly, I don't see how the non-existence of God could be possible. Do you think the universe made itself?
Samalamalamdam 2 years ago
thanks for your recycled logic but how do you presume to know what made the universe?
science hopes to understand incredible things but we have to accept that not all these answers will be answered in our lifetime. Religious people cutting corners and guessing really doesn't help!
believe what you want but don't be narrow minded and take other people's random guesses as the gospel truth.

This is getting a little too personal. I have had an education.
Samalamalamdam 2 years ago
I apologise. My last comment was nasty.
But I have a real problem with the idea that people can so readily dismiss the vast amount of scientific evidence for evolution and the big bang, when they apparently know nothing about it. And I find religion, quite frankly, dangerous and insane.
FranBMan 2 years ago 4
I disagree .
I think that Science vs Religion is a false issue.
Science can also be dangerous and insane, given that we as a species do not possess the maturity required to deal with such great power possessed by these knowledges.
So for me, both religion and science, and whatever other cultural elements we have, are both beneficial and dangerous, given that they are driven by the wrong motivations, in all cases, the quest for power and domination.
miguelbaptista 2 years ago
And one more thing. There is nothing in the Bible that disprooves Science.
In fact, one of the main advices that God gives us is to seek knowledge, even if it costs us all our gold. In the bible, true gold IS knowledge.
Any idea that God is against Science only exists in the minds of those that take Religion for what it was "sold as" by fanatical cleregy throught the ages.
miguelbaptista 2 years ago
This is where the Bible is entirely contradictory. Do you not find it ironic that, whilst what you said may be true, God also didn't want Adam and Eve to eat from the tree of knowledge?
FranBMan 2 years ago
No.
God aknowledged that we did seek out knowledge. So the best that we can do is to try seek all the knowledge we can. Not only phisical and scientifical knowledge, but also spiritual.
miguelbaptista 2 years ago
Yeah, I would agree in general. But according to the Bible, God punished Adam and Eve for eating from the Tree of Knowledge. He kicked them out of the Garden of Eden.
FranBMan 2 years ago
Yes, but the story doesnt end there.
Thus, "seek knowledge, even if it costs you all your silver, for it is worth more than gold".
I truly believe our scientific knowledge of the world is not in the way of our divine belief. I believe there is another realm of existance, but since we are living in this one for now, we must do what we can with what tools we can to shed light onto the darkness.
miguelbaptista 2 years ago
On the other hand, many men of Science ( but not Einstein for instance) rule out any notion of a God. But what science studies, exists beyond our knowledge of it. We didnt invent all these forces in Nature. We are just becoming conscious of them now. And I say God is related to that same nature. He gave us this beautiful planet to live in. A shame we are wasting it....
miguelbaptista 2 years ago
It isn't for anyone to decide whether we as a species lack the ability to deal with knowledge. Education is a fundamental human right.
You're right, everything can and almost certainly will be corrupted by the powers that be, but religion being used to do terrible things is a huge waste. Religion isn't necessary and whether you like it or not, science is. The only way society can progress is to discover more about our world.
FranBMan 2 years ago
If you fail to see that we as a civilization are still immature to deal with the scientific tools we have at hand, than just look at all the polution and bio.weapons we have, and look at how the greed for power is amongst those who control these tools.
It also isnt for anyone to decide that Religion isn't necessary. It is a fundamental part of our right to exercise belief and to have faith, very important in millions of people's lifes, their happiness and well being.
