Informative and charming. I have a real passion for the 18th century. From it come my favorite composers (Bach, Mozart, Corelli, etc.), two of my favorite painters (Hogart, Gainsborough), and one my favorite writers, Dr. Samuel Johnson.
When I look at the portraiture of the 1700s, it seems bizarre to think that at one point people (of a certain class) actually conducted their affairs looking so done-up and stylized. "Unnatural" was their ideal. It's all very far removed from today's world...
@GMJ7 Thank you. Yes, I find history fascinating too, especially the mindsets of the people - their standards, their fashions, their sense of humor, etc. I like the music of this time too but must admit that I don't know much about Corelli apart from some of his Concerti Grossi. And yes, the extreme formality during some points in history is just fascinating - especially the heightened manners to match the stylized fashions.
@lookce I have my next few videos tentatively planned. Another fashion video is on that list, but I am not sure when that will happen. I have some fashion books with stunning pictures that I’d like to show, and some neat facts about corsets, underclothes, and hoopskirts that I’d like to do a video on. So, sometime . . .
@SaturnSputnik Thank you. :) I find it interesting that nowadays not many people wear wigs, but a fair number of people wear some kind of weave or hair extension.
if i can recall correctly, in the now children's nursery rhyme "Yankee Doodle" the term macaroni was used satirically, mocking the ridiculously "grand" hair of the Europeans
@enthnd03 Yes. It sure is interesting to figure out the meaning behind nursery rhymes. And speaking of Yankee Doodle, I just looked it up and am surprised to find that (at least according to Wikipedia) there are a bunch more verses. One being: "And there was Cap'n Washington, / And gentle folks about him; / They say he's grown so 'tarnal proud / He will not ride without em'." Who knew!?
@WreckSector Ah, yes! The macaroni fashion from “Yankee Doodle.” Thank you for reminding me of that. The pictures from Wikipedia are too funny.
And yes, I like to think our fashions have become simpler and more comfortable too. While a part of me yearns for the clothes of yesteryear, I am glad that I do not have to get all “suited up” to go out of the house.
@mursie100 Good point. It's always been the wealthy and famous who set fashions. The fashions I experience are much simpler in relation. If I compared my clothes to poorer/average people in history, then perhaps current fashion with emphasis on self expression and individual style and fashion statements is not so simple. And yes, I do agree with/like your description of alternating between attention and comfort. And Gaga? After Googling, I realize I'm even more fashion ignorant than I thought!

Splendid video! I've always been intrigued by diversity of the powdered wig. It's interesting how styles change over the centuries.

@SPimpernel1 That is honestly nice to know and if I may, your videos always manage to grab my normally lackluster attention.

@AudioVideoClips Hehehee. You should have been there for a school speech I once gave on the microscopic insects that live on the human body! :D

This reminds me of the "macaroni" fashion (just look on wikipedia). Men would wear these GIANT wigs with tiny hats on top.
I'd like to think our fashion has gotten simpler and more comfortable, but who knows =)

@WreckSector
Fashion is getting simpler !!!?
I don't really know much about fashion, but if Lady Gagas clothes are the latest in fashion (or so I heard), then that is far from true :p
What I think is that fashion is just circling around with time alternating between huge and craving for attention, AND simple and comfy
