can you please help me,what articulation is best for V ittorio Monti- Monti Čardaš,dagadaga,or takataka double or triple help me please, when you see it you will know on what part do i meen. spe.on a allegro vivace part.
so when double tonguing you actually tongue t-t-t k-k-k t-k-t-k-t k-t-k-t-k while playing through your flute? or is it just ta tonguing all the way through?
I would like to get reacquainted with the flute after many years and have been watching your videos. Would a Haynes or an Armstrong be good to practice on? or take lessons with?
Do you have any tips for slurring? I always have trouble keep my notes seperate. When I slur, the notes always sound like they're "slooping" and running into each other.
Is double tonguing the same as just tonguing. My teacher has always told me to use "too" when tonguing. It is wrong to use "too" for regular tonguing? Or with double and triple tonguing? Do you have any tips for an easy transition for the high ledger notes down to high A or F?
What grade were you in when you learned double tonguing? I am in 7th grade and am worrying about if I need to learn double tonguing. Right now my private flute teacher told me to work on this piece and it is a bit difficult. I started in 5th grade. The piece is Fantasie Pastorale Hongroise by Doppler op 26. Could you tell me some hints?Anyone?
There's also a DID-DLL, DID-DLL (as in the word "diddle") articulation, spoken of by Quantz, Hotteterre, and by Rachel Brown [rachelbrownflute dot* com] free online pdf. Useful for fast 16th notes. Quantz talks about it in his book "On Playing the Flute" (section III of Chapter 6). It's also "a little prejudicial to tone or embouchure at the beginning" (of one's practice) but useful in fast baroque passages with 16ths. Can also use TIDDLE in some situations, or, as per Quantz: TID'LL..
I dont even play the flute, but thats very interesting. Thats why i think the flute is really hard, you have to like aim for the mouth part. I play the clarinet, All i have to do really is keep my mouth on the mouthpiece.
Please any Brass players or anyone! I can say the syllables outloud and in the mouthpiece just fine.. but without buzzing. When i put my face in the mouthpiece and buzz i cant do the 2nd syllable. Its very frustrating. Any Ideas?
you have some great videos nina^^ my band director is great at most instruments, with trumpet as his main instrument. he is giving me private lessons and when always directs me to your videos for flute, as an alternative perspective... im learning vibrato now.. ya... wrong video.. but i felt like saying that..
Thanks for offering such useful advice! As a saxophonist, I've have had a hard time adapting to flute articulation and vibrato. I've already seen great progress in my playing from your tips. Peace
Dear Nina, I am total flute analphabet, but one year ago I get a flute from my friend, cause love it so much! I have no teacher, and neither I know the notes (!!!) But I have good music ear love to play!!! Your lessons are for me very very great for me and I promis I will follow them and practice...Thank you veeery much !!!
oh my goodness! one particular part of this video was especiallly helpful to me! you described the "ka" syllable as the throat syllable! to be quite honest, I have been double tonguing for a couple of years now and have never really focused on the "ka" syllable that way. This relates back to another video of yours that explains how descriptions of different methods are very personal to the student. Thank you very much for your description! haha my private teacher will be ecstatic
Umm... I was just wondering about why I need tonguing. It's just that instead of tonguing, I've been stopping the air using my throat ever since I've started playing the flute. None of my band instructors have ever said anything about it and I was wondering whether there was a real reason to switch over to tonguing. I want to try to learn it and think that it would help motivate me if I knew the benefits of it over my current style. Any help would be great.
Its better to tongue because, you get better quality sound and you separate your notes. As opposed to doing it with air, where you'll slur your notes together and it sounds messy.
I'm no instructor, but I know from experience that that is the worst possible thing you can do. Definately practice transitioning into tounging. Stopping the air with your throat is bad for tone quality and will kill you. And when you start tounging, make sure you use correct syllables, or you might as well be stopping the air with your throat.
can anyone tell me if you can leave your right hand little finger on the Db key for the whole of a 2 octave arpeggio? it doesnt seem to affect the intonation and sliding to and from this key is an awkward and risky movement. thanks.
On youtube there's a man who can tongue so fast he can single tongue faster than double tongue, and he can do semiquavers with ease at 256. He does a 45 minute warmup of this every day, why? Because it's nice to be able to play things 2-3x faster than you will EVER need!
2:55 Nice! Very good lesson, and I wish I could play a double tongue that good!
I've been thinking about learning to double on the flute (from sax) for big band music. I'll have to watch all of your vids for sure! You play awesome, AND can explain it well. 10 for 10!
I totally get it! I never knew about "double tonguing". I have a lot of sixteenth notes on my solo. (Actually they're eighth notes in two-two time.) Now I can play them flawlessly. Thank you so much!!! ;D
beautiful!!!!!!!! From my ignorance, I never knew playing flute was so hard! Thats the magic of YOUTUBE, you can get inside the masters workroom to stare at their secrets! =)
Very helpful!! I can single tongue very very fast (I played the fast part of the Faure Fantasie with single tonguing) so learning double tonguing was something I always happily avoided..
however, now that I'm entering my second year B.Mus I've learned I can't get away with not doing it anymore haha. This has been an excellent excessive for me.. thanks bunches!! (:
I couldn't really get the hang of it a while ago, gave up, then I tried it the other day and I could just do it. I don't know why, but I suddenly got it. Just play as if you were tonguing it normally.
I've always had hard time with double tongue, but this is really helpful. But I find it really hard playing with a K or G-sound. I'll try my best anyway!
Heh, when you were demonstrating the uneven double tonguing, (with the strong "ta" and weak "ka",) it sort of sounded like when someone pulls the straw in & out of a fastfood soft drink cup!
Nina, i was wondering if you know the "Thick as a Brick" piece and could help me with a question. In Part 2, from 6:25 to 7:10, the flute part, is that double tonguing or some kind of effect? I'm just kinda curious, that sound way too fast for double tonguing, but who knows!
ps: i don't even have a flute yet but i'm going to buy one asap! :).
Thank you, Nina, this is the breakthrough I've been looking for, and on the clarinet, too! I've never had this explained to me before; I just always figured I was one of those poor souls who just "didn't get it". I still need lots and lots of practice, but this helps so much!
you are really good! It helped me with my double tounging thx! Ive been playing the flute since forth grade and its still hard for me but after this video ive been getting better. please add me
Thank you so much for this video. I've been struggling with double tonguing for awhile and I've already improved in two days of practicing this method!
you're very good at explaining stuff - my teacher told me to watch ur videos to help me learn to double-tongue - i like ur method, going back and forth between starting with tuh and starting with kuh :) very helpful!!!
duh it's gonna take you weeks to learn that. lol if it were easy, everyone would be able to do it. and I guarentee it will take you longer than a few weeks to be able to do it like her ^^
What kinf of flute do you own i own a Armstrong 303B Open Hole Flute i have been playing for about 6 years but im thinking to cange my flute what king do you think i should get
i've been playing for 6 years and i never learned double tonguing...that might just be because i never took formal lessons...just played band stuff....maybe i should take lessons...hmmm
hey i've been playing for 5 years and i never learned double tonguing. i still learned how to do other stuff. just because we didn't learn doube tonguing yet, doesn't mean we're ot good flute players. dumbass. stop trying to act all BA
my applogies for offending your feelings. you are right - you're most likely better than me. you got to be great flutists, i'm just a pitiful amateur.
I started 3 years ago and I practice almost 6 hours everyday sometimes 10 hours but I love flute more than everything in life I can play anything. When I first started I havent seen anybody for one year just stayed at home practiced
I teach the syllable to say is tu and ku (as close to the forward sound of the French tu, as in et tu). This system helps to keep the tongue a little flatter, a little more forward and not lock up in the back of the throat, avoiding the arch that usually blocks the throat off. What she means by even is not only tempo, but also that the ku isn't more airy comparatively. One can be even tempo in a run of notes, but the imbalance could arise from the tu and the ku having different clarity.
whats the difference between an open-holed flute and a closed one?...I know the open-holed flute has open keys...but is it different in sound wise?...and I've only played flute for about one year...and that is hard to play...my band teacher tols us to try it out.
The only diffrence that I know of is that the keys are opened. I don't think it sounds diffrent because there are inserts that can make it a closed hole flute whichy would sound the same as any other flute.
Heyahh I Have Been Playing The FluteFor 10 years Since I Was About 6 And I Have Just Come Across Double Tinguing And I Find It Really Hard To Do. It Is Amazing How You Can Do It So Fast.
I play trumpet and i am trying to double tongue, but whenever i try to do the taka taka thing, the sound for the ka does not sound accurate. It seems as if i can't tongue while doing the ka, because i'm not using my tongue.
violinmuse14, i am a flutist... :) and well tounging is where you play/blow normally, but you say the word 'two' like your kind of flicking the roof of your mouth with your tounge... its kind of hard to explain and not to show you... so if the way im explaining it is confusing you, sorry! :) but thats what my flute teacher told me... if you have anymore questions, feel free to ask... :)
violinmuse14, i am a flutist :) well the way i learned tounging is you play/blow normally, and then you start saying the word "two". its kind of like your trying to flick the top of your mouth with your tounge... i hope that made sense to you! hope that helps! if you have any more flute questions, feel free to ask!! :)
thankyou so much for posting this, its helped me immensly, i love especially the ttt, kkk, tktkt, ktktk exercise because i wasnt sure how to practice it other than outside of flute practice and in scales going tk tk on each note or t on one note and k on the nest etc.
but i incorporated this into my normal practice routine and its already helped after only a couple of days!!
With the highest three or so notes I really don't like the way I sound and, I make that "p" sound. I feel tight lipped but, I can't get the note out otherwise. It seems like I'm just spitting them out. Which one of the double dounging methods works best for the highest octave?
Easy. on your left hand you use your thumb and index finger. on your right hand you use you index finger and pinky. (I know the notes from low Bb to high Bb) :)
Meddle75 I can't say without hearing you but probably you are losing your embouchure, letting the tongue get in the way, and also forgetting to keep the air moving--blow while you K
hey nina, im getting the same problem as meddle72, its like the k is very weak compared to the t, if u know wat i mean.. ive read books and got lessons from a few musicians, even though i practice 6 hours aday, it just doesent get better, and the thing that ANNOYS ME the most, is that i cant keep the double tonguing flowing, any tips, hints? check oput my videos, i have a few flute ones on there, mostly whistle, thanks nina
Thanks Nina. You are a wonderful flute player, a very good teacher and a very beautiful lady. Im a flute and saxophone player and college profesor in San Juan P.R. and Im using your videos with my students with very good response. It would be great to have you visiting us for master classes!
I've been watching your videos, and am always looking on ways to improve my playing. I've been playing flute for about 7 1/2 years now, but I've realized that there are some problems I have while playing. One that really bugs me is when I play different notes, and then they either crack, or go fuzzy. Could you please help me?
dear harkflute: it sounds like a basic embouchure and air angling problem. Try adjusting the emb position and I really recommend singing and playing, a LOT. I have a video on that. That is the most I can say without hearing/seeing you.
I'm a recorder player who wants to become a better technical player and next week I'm starting lessons, and your videos will allow me to better my playing even more! What an amazing universe this is! Thanks very much...
I'm using Trevor Wye's practice books. He says to start out doing the articulation exercises by just using your diaphram/abs in order to train the muscle so you can get a good "bounce" on your articulation. This is probably a good route for me as I haven't done much with breath control yet, although I seem to be able to do a pretty good vibrato using diaphram/abdomen breathing, so I guess I'm getting the hang of it ;-)
nikaeda: I do a lot of practice with breath articulation and I will be uploading a video on how I use the Bach C major sonata as one example of this kind of practice. Stay tuned...
i just realised today, after almost 10 years of playing that i haven't been double tonguing at all, ive merely been single tonguing really fast, but not fast enough for it to work!
but HOW do u double tongue??? i still don't get it.....

This comment has received too many negative votes show
hahahaha; you've been just jingling, not learning. if you wanna play flute, not just jingling - take lessons; stop joking around.
exerhlp 3 years ago
hey i've been playing for 5 years and i never learned double tonguing. i still learned how to do other stuff. just because we didn't learn doube tonguing yet, doesn't mean we're ot good flute players. dumbass. stop trying to act all BA
bupbers 3 years ago 3
bupbers is right. I got to a 9th grade level in half a year, just 'jingling'
You dont need formal lessons to be good. (most likely better than you)

my applogies for offending your feelings. you are right - you're most likely better than me. you got to be great flutists, i'm just a pitiful amateur.

Boostthestreetracer 3 years ago
The only diffrence that I know of is that the keys are opened. I don't think it sounds diffrent because there are inserts that can make it a closed hole flute whichy would sound the same as any other flute.
CourtneeMalakian 3 years ago
I'm pretty sure open holed flutes let you kind of 'bend' notes like on guitar.

Hello
I play trumpet and i am trying to double tongue, but whenever i try to do the taka taka thing, the sound for the ka does not sound accurate. It seems as if i can't tongue while doing the ka, because i'm not using my tongue.

I'm having trouble with having enough breath while playing my flute any suggestions?
AngelInAqua 3 years ago
Fill your stomach making it becoming bigger and without raising your shoulders. That should let you keep your breath.

I'm not a flute player, but I am curious as to what tonguing is. Could you please explain?
violinmuse14 3 years ago
violinmuse14, i am a flutist... :)
kabamodernluva33 3 years ago
violinmuse14, i am a flutist :) well the way i learned tounging is you play/blow normally, and then you start saying the word "two". its kind of like your trying to flick the top of your mouth with your tounge... i hope that made sense to you! hope that helps! if you have any more flute questions, feel free to ask!! :)

thankyou so much for posting this, its helped me immensly, i love especially the ttt, kkk, tktkt, ktktk exercise because i wasnt sure how to practice it other than outside of flute practice and in scales going tk tk on each note or t on one note and k on the nest etc.
but i incorporated this into my normal practice routine and its already helped after only a couple of days!!
you're the best

With the highest three or so notes I really don't like the way I sound and, I make that "p" sound. I feel tight lipped but, I can't get the note out otherwise. It seems like I'm just spitting them out. Which one of the double dounging methods works best for the highest octave?

I'm having a hard time articulating the stacatto eighth notes
and I can't play clear enough for the chromatic notes A to high C.

How can I fix it?

hello nina, when i use the K in the lower register the sound disapears. what am i doing wrong?
Meddle72 4 years ago
Meddle75 I can't say without hearing you but probably you are losing your embouchure, letting the tongue get in the way, and also forgetting to keep the air moving--blow while you K
ninaflute 4 years ago
hey nina, im getting the same problem as meddle72, its like the k is very weak compared to the t, if u know wat i mean.. ive read books and got lessons from a few musicians, even though i practice 6 hours aday, it just doesent get better, and the thing that ANNOYS ME the most, is that i cant keep the double tonguing flowing, any tips, hints? check oput my videos, i have a few flute ones on there, mostly whistle, thanks nina

Hello Nina
I've been watching your videos, and am always looking on ways to improve my playing. I've been playing flute for about 7 1/2 years now, but I've realized that there are some problems I have while playing. One that really bugs me is when I play different notes, and then they either crack, or go fuzzy. Could you please help me?
harkflute 4 years ago

dear harkflute: it sounds like a basic embouchure and air angling problem. Try adjusting the emb position and I really recommend singing and playing, a LOT. I have a video on that. That is the most I can say without hearing/seeing you.
ninaflute 4 years ago
I'm a recorder player who wants to become a better technical player and next week I'm starting lessons, and your videos will allow me to better my playing even more! What an amazing universe this is! Thanks very much...
harrykatz 4 years ago
I'm using Trevor Wye's practice books. He says to start out doing the articulation exercises by just using your diaphram/abs in order to train the muscle so you can get a good "bounce" on your articulation. This is probably a good route for me as I haven't done much with breath control yet, although I seem to be able to do a pretty good vibrato using diaphram/abdomen breathing, so I guess I'm getting the hang of it ;-)
nikaeda 4 years ago
nikaeda: I do a lot of practice with breath articulation and I will be uploading a video on how I use the Bach C major sonata as one example of this kind of practice. Stay tuned...

Great. Look forward to seeing that one.

thank you so much.
i just realised today, after almost 10 years of playing that i haven't been double tonguing at all, ive merely been single tonguing really fast, but not fast enough for it to work!
