You clear your ears. As you descend to deeper depths the air pockets compress in your body due to an increase of pressure causing discomfort. To clear your ears, the most common way, you simply add more air to the pockets by pinching your nose with your fingers and blow out of your nose at the same time. This forces excess air into the compressed pockets, be careful not to blow too hard because it is possible to blow your ear drum by doing this. Divers, like myself, commonly clear there ears be
One time my BC rapidly deflated for some reason... Luckily I was only 20-25 feet subsurf but.... holy shit, scariest day of my life. Shoulda Go Proed it.
@NiTr091 You might find some color aberrations during the dive, like the camera trying to compensate for the blue-hued environment and coloring the image red (nothing that can't be undone in the editing process). Still, I believe the camera was a great investment for the price.
@welderman27 The camera is rated to 180feet and I believe it would go as deep as it is rated (I have used it down to 150 without any problems). About the blurring that can be corrected by purchasing a new housing with a flat lens - check my Cormoran/Tokai Video for updated shots with the flat-lens housing.
@tidejp Thanks so the curve lens well looks like what I see on the boat was probably the curve lens and it was fine until going under water. So how much is just the housing itself with the flat lens?? I'm blown away at how good the quality is still though with this little camera and the dam thing only cost 300 thats amazing. Thanks
@Applesandfries No, he was actually visiting with his dad (the older gentleman in red shirt), so basically I was being the "chaperone" for both with them.
@tidejp oh good I was going to complain about him being a horrible guide being so far away from everyone :P and his low-hanging bottle gives me the shivers :D
how did you like guam? and what kind of education did you need to dive there?
@Applesandfries I have been living here for the past 3.5 years and so far it can be a pretty neat place to be (nevertheless, rather small and a little far away from the rest of the world). The Blue Hole is considered a deep dive, going a little further from 130feet, in my case I am an instructor but would require an experienced diver, or someone with AOW or deep dive specialty under the belt.
@Applesandfries Hi. I am a PADI instructor. I think your idea of becoming a dive guide is great, also think about the possibility of furthering your education in the next couple of years and becoming an instructor (or even tec instructor!), it is too way too fun to pass! By the way, where are you living?
@tidejp :) yes, that's what i was planning, but it all costs a bit too much money for a poor student. and all the work for education jobs are too long for my vacations from uni (i only get 3 months, twice a year). i live in germany :)
How is it taking pictures with the Go Pro camera underwater ? I'm thinking about buying the new camera that is coming, but i dont know if it beats the S95. But the S95 costs more than doubble of the Go Pro 2 so i dunno :S
@UGOTSMURFEDS I can do it automaticly I don't even think about it I just breath out my noise and it does it for me I can basicly go straight down when doing it and people are normaly like how you go down so fast.. I was like I don't know I just do
@meany1023 Well Done! Be sure to certify or at least get some proper training on deep diving, that will make you safer and less prone to accidents while in the deep.
@SMARTYN89 Hi there. I am not sure but I would guess with 2GB you could go something in between 38 to 45 minutes - I have been using a 8GB and so far it has been pretty decent... I would say use it with 2GB and expand later for whatever you can afford.
What settings do you use with the camera as far as center focus, etc. I'm less concerned on the resolution. I went to the keys last week and my videos look like crap. It would focus on the fish.
@edornac I use at 720p/60fps and can tell you that ever time I've tried to use the flashlight or any other source of artificial light the gopro White Balance went crazy and all the footage ended up curving to red and too dark...

on gopro's site they sell the standard housing for like $40 is that the same as a flat housing? also do you have the lcd bacpac? I was wondering if the gopro is good for macro shots under water.
@GALANTXVR4 Hi. Sorry for taking too long to reply. No, the standard housing is very different from the "flat housing" - compare this with mymost recent one (Tokai and Cormoran Dive)... In this one things are way blurry when compared to the newest video, that is because I am now using the flat housing. Macro photos it should be okay, as long as you have the flat housing - they will be blurry with your normal one. Another thing you should be concerned is White Balance - the gopro is always auto.
@tidejp thanks a lot for the reply I see some places selling the flat housing and a color correction film that goes in the new flat housing will that fix the white balance or is there a way to fix the adjustments on the go pro? I have the gopro 1080 and have not had the chance to play with it underwater yet so any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.
@GALANTXVR4 The GoPro is pretty much a full auto camera, no way you would be able to do white balance underwater - but fear not, the image quality is pretty good and no major color distortions most part of the time. I don't use any kind of "filter" (most likely a piece of red plastic that goes in front of the lens), and if I need to do color correction I perform it through the editing software (I've used Vegas, Premier, and Final Cut and all worked well).
@tidejp thanks a lot again man, I really appreciate all the help. I will be going back to the Philippines in Jan. to get my dive certification and do some more diving as well in Tubbataha Reef that is why I got the gopro because it seems like a cheaper alternative then those expensive dive cams they sell at dive shops here in the states. Maybe when I get some more dive experience I'll join you guys for a dive in Guam =)
Hey I just finished my open water certification and going on a night dive in a couple of weeks and would like to take a camera, I have a GoPro motorsport with the standard housing, where can I find the flat housing? Have you tried it with the standard housing? Cheers :)
@ryno2085 you should master air consumption and boyancy control before taking a camera underwater...how? dive a few more times then take the advanced and dive some more.. and only then...
@Valtyful Air consumption definitely, but I have boyancy control sorted. My go pro is smaller than my 2nd stage so I'm sure it would be fine to take down, I wouldn't attempt to take anything bigger down though, not yet. Thanks for your advice though, always nice to hear from other divers.
@Valtyful Definitely, and people should keep in mind that the GoPro is a small camera, and any small movement looks like a big shake if you have it on your hand like a do.
@ryno2085 BTW, I've tried it once during the night and it wasn't good footage. Even though I kept it shallow, with a full moon, and a UK C8 eLed light the footage still was unusable.
@tidejp I had a feeling it wouldnt be ideal for night time, I have seen some people use the go pro on their helmets at night and you just cant see a thing, so under water would be nearly impossible at night with the go pro. Cheers for the feedback, i think im going to start looking at other cameras for under water.
which setting do your have it on? like r2 or something? im in Guam now and working on my Advanced Open Water. planning to hit that up here soon. i have a gopro motorsports package as well, just really worried about taking it diving with me...
@3gWReX Hey, hit me up through a msg... I live on Guam and I'm a instructor, can help you if you are looking forward to getting your Nitrox, or other specialties like deep, wreck, etc. I also have the motorsports package and so far no biggie. The only thing I did was buying a housing with a flat lens (aftermarket part) for underwater shooting. But as far as it goes, it withstands 140+ feet (that I've tested myself). Just make sure the white rubber seal is clean before closing the casing.
hey tidejp, i have an important q. what software did u use to edit the gopro raw footage? im seriously considering buying the gopro hd helmet hero but im trying to decide how i would go about editing it. please do reply :)
@misterabuse I have been using Sony Vegas 9 to edit, but whatever software you try to use (as long as you're using a PC) try to install KLite Codec Pack first. It might increase the chances your software will read the encoding. I have the helmet mount, and as far as it goes, it is a pretty good buy if you are planning to record while biking or skydiving.
Porque usando la Go pro HD 960 bajo el agua en una pileta el video sale demasiado obscuro aunque la iluminacion con luz artificial es bastante buena, como se soluciona ya que no lo puedo hacer atraves de la camara, gracias
@ooyuma you cannot zoom with it but as a warning due to the fact that the housing curved over the lens it gets blurry underwater. Eye of Mine sells flat housings for $80 if you are willing to pay.
Good video and music selection. I love my GoPro. Check out my videos on yourtube too as I wear my Go Pro on my head for hand free filming. Also have video on vimeo titled Key West Adventure 2010.
@mydogyoshi Hey I know this one... you can buy anti-fog inserts... they work about 4 times, then you put them in the oven, and they work a few more times.. One pack will last you at least a year. Can't remember off the top of my head but probably costs me $12
Have you gotten the new housing yet and is it better? Did it get more blurry with depth? Have you been pleased overall with it or do you wish you had gotten the HD1080p? I was looking at buying one soon for a trip next month to Cozumel and liked the ease of use.
Man I dont know why but this video just looks totally cool! I guess it's the music + mellow skinking you guys doing to get to the bottom. But yeah, totally looks like you guys sky diving in slow motion but in water. :P
I can't wait to get a go pro! I didn't know they were capable of that deep! Pretty incredible!! Any word on the new housing or when it will be out? Wondering if I should hold out on getting one..
@10xneil Yes, it was in my hand and I haven't mounted to my mask yet. How do you do it? I have the helmet mount with it, but don't think it would help much, right?
@tidejp Or you can use a sorte of bar (aluminium), and fix the cam at the end, and hold the bar on with your hand ( take a bar of 1meter), now, there is a beautful view of youre self diving :) (Sorry for my english, i speak french)...
@tidejp well there is elastic straps like those found on a headlight or you could try to use an adhesive mount if you can find some flat surface, googles maybe? :)
@tidejp. i have this same camera and was wondering which of the settings you find best for underwater? I have the surf hero hd not sure if its the same one you have. Are you using the r2 setting?
@John087w Hi John. Some people like the r4 setting for diving (not my case, though), I am using r3. The 60fps make slow motion sequences look clean and smooth in the editing, and not a noticeable difference in the use of the memory card.
@tidejp. i have this same camera and was wondering which of the settings you find best for underwater? I have the surf hero hd not sure if its the same one you have. Are you using the r2 setting?
@Alex85788 Yes, it should be about right, 180ft. I have recently ordered a new case to correct the blur image underwater... if you are looking forward to buying one for diving, you might want to consider this case by eyeofmine too...
the blurry image is caused by the unsuitable shape of the domeport. As you mentioned; we all need a "scube type dome port" for the GoPro... Hope to get it soon.

so what do you use for storage, the 32GB SD?

@mydogyoshi Hey I know this one... you can buy anti-fog inserts... they work about 4 times, then you put them in the oven, and they work a few more times.. One pack will last you at least a year. Can't remember off the top of my head but probably costs me $12

that was amazing.

which version of the GoPro HD camcorder is this?
ussprinceton2004 1 year ago
@ussprinceton2004 What do you mean? This is the GoProHD. The other version is the Hero. If you're wondering about the package, it is the motorsports.

Nice! I take it you were holding it in your hand? Have you tried mounting it on your mask?
10xneil 1 year ago
@10xneil Yes, it was in my hand and I haven't mounted to my mask yet. How do you do it? I have the helmet mount with it, but don't think it would help much, right?
tidejp 1 year ago
@tidejp You can put it on your head with the helmet fixation :)
PARaIRdrenaline 1 year ago
@tidejp Or you can use a sorte of bar (aluminium), and fix the cam at the end, and hold the bar on with your hand ( take a bar of 1meter), now, there is a beautful view of youre self diving :) (Sorry for my english, i speak french)...
PARaIRdrenaline 1 year ago
@tidejp well there is elastic straps like those found on a headlight or you could try to use an adhesive mount if you can find some flat surface, googles maybe? :)

MegaBORI51 1 year ago
@MegaBORI51 those are the flashes of the cameras of the divers that are below the exit of the blue hole.

@tidejp. i have this same camera and was wondering which of the settings you find best for underwater? I have the surf hero hd not sure if its the same one you have. Are you using the r2 setting?
John087w 1 year ago
@John087w Hi John. Some people like the r4 setting for diving (not my case, though), I am using r3. The 60fps make slow motion sequences look clean and smooth in the editing, and not a noticeable difference in the use of the memory card.

Nice clear water! What's the maximum depth you've taking the camera to?
poyorudo 1 year ago
@poyorudo Thanks. I've taken the GoPro down to 131f / 39.9m and did not experience any problems with it. The housing is quite sturdy.
tidejp 1 year ago
@tidejp i'm looking to buy one says the max is 180ft that's a lot of pressure
Alex85788 1 year ago
@Alex85788 Yes, it should be about right, 180ft. I have recently ordered a new case to correct the blur image underwater... if you are looking forward to buying one for diving, you might want to consider this case by eyeofmine too...
tidejp 1 year ago
Well done...
the blurry image is caused by the unsuitable shape of the domeport. As you mentioned; we all need a "scube type dome port" for the GoPro... Hope to get it soon.
Thanks buddy.

*****Very Weel DONE
Do not worry about blury image.
It is normal, after 7meters deep there is no colors only blue. Unless You will use dive-light
