  • MichaelRogge Fascinating videos of HK from those years. I wish you with all my heart good health, prosperity, and 150 years old! Thank you!

  • @bonola25 I wish the same to you and all other viewers.

  • wow..... how old are you now?

  • @bensontam 82 !

  • Your video is so interesting. I think Hong Kong Government should buy a copy of your videos and keep them in their archive for documentary, etc. You have talents of a journalist, perhaps. THANKS.

  • @udon890. Well, the major institutions keep copies of my films: University, History Museum, Govt. Film Archive, etc. So they will not be lost.

  • @MichaelRogge : You have done a very good thing. Thank you - on behalf of all the viewers.

  • I luv music background!! I miss Hong Kong~~~

  • Hello, I m a Hong Kong people, thank you so much you upload these old films!

  • HK was a beautiful place t live back then

  • As my most appreciative viewers are in Hong Kong I try to upload as much as I have on my stay there. When my material is exhausted I shall make clips of Holland and other Europeam countries.

  • Mr. Rogge, thank you very much for all the video you uploaded and I enjoyed them so much. You see, I am from Hong Kong. I was born there in 1943. I spent my childhood and teenage there. I left Hong Kong in 1964 for America. I still missed old Hong Kong. I went back many times since 1980 and nothing is the same. Old friends passed away, old neighborhood no more. I even moved back once but couldn't adjust but back to the States. Once again, thank you very much for bringing back memories.

  • Same here! I have enjoyed the old HK so much that I can't get used to the modern one and will never return again.

  • I think your most appreciative viewers are in Hong Kong because the pace of change is so rapid here.

  • Indeed. My most faithful viewers come from HK - around 1000 daily and some 600.000 in total. From the bottom of my heart I wish them good luck and health in 2010.

  • @MichaelRogge : We wish you good luck. I can see Hong Kong in those old days before I was born in your videos. You are wonderful. Thanks.

  • I made this impression for my folks back in Holland. They were not to see me in six years' time! I'm living in Holland now. All my DVD's are with the HK Govt. Film Archive, Museum and University.

  • You are handsome and smart here!

  • You are handsome and smart here, Michael!

  • A million thanks, Mr Rogge, for letting us see precious clips like this one. I was born in HK (in the 50's). I'm hopelessly nostalgic and really miss the place where I grew up. I still live in HK but it's so different now.

  • you are this young guy , or the man making this film?

i am very curious why all your films are filming so stable that just look using tripod.

and how much per film you shoot each time? and do you still remember how much one rolex they sell in hongkong at 50's ?

  • Yes, that´s me, twenty years old, 59 years ago. Most of the shots were taken without tripod, with a Pathescope 9,5mm camera. Later I bought a Paillard Bolex 16mm camera and shot in Kodachrome. I used 90% of the film I shot. No, I do not remember the cost of a Rolex then. But it was cheap alright.

  • would like to have been a fly on the wall then - lived in hk from 67 (a 9 year old) i can relate to many of the items in your clips - buildings, street scenes. thanks for sharing these

  • Mr.Rogge,

Just want to in evidence your good work is extremely valuable in HK history. I've been looking for old pictures/videos of HK for 20 years. So far your work is amazing and bring me back my childhood memory. The only chance to view 1 min of this type of video is from old HK movie & may be only 30''and no comparison to your work. (Ironically, all this good work is from a foreigner Mr.Rogge).

I do want to share some background and stories to you,can I email you ? Thank You

    Bob, Toronto

  • Great many thanks for your film clips. I just became your fan now. How long have you not been back in Hong Kong? If I were you, I would love to make another trip back to Hong Kong now. What a life experience! Hong Kong tv channel should interview you.

  • Thanks for your praise. The last time I was in HK was in 1990 and even then I couldn't believe my eyes that all that was charming had gone! AETN ALL ASIA NETWORKS have visited me in Amsterdam and are going to broadcast a series of short interviews with me.

  • Mr.Rogge,I was born in 1951. Hong Kong people don't care too much about history (see how many 20's-50's buildings still left in HK) heart breaking !Thank you and I really appreciate your kindness and effort to share this sweet memory with us. I always love and missed the pre-war building which I grew up . I don't even have a picture of my old apartment, sad !

Once again, thank you for your good heart and sharing. Bob Toronto Canada.

  • nice footage - made more authentic by the background music (many existing are silent)

loved it - before my time but as a hkfile am right there

  • I can't imagine that the city area was so hustle-and-bustle in the late 1940s as the streets looked deserted in many many photos of old HK. Thanks for the upload!

  • Of course it was rush hour at the time. In my other clips you will see almost deserted streets.

  • Oh, I see. Thanks for the information.

  • It was a march alright everyday to the office, but fortunately not interplenatary.

  • Thanks for the sharing. I am from HK. I once read your web and you do have a rich collection of film clips. Unfortunately I cannot read Dutch. It was a luxury to have a movie camera by then. If it had not been you, we could not have the precious opportunity of viewing these archives. Thanks again

  • Thanks. It was taken by a simple 9,5mm Pathescope camera. That size was unknown in the Far East, so I changed over to 16mm from 1952 and bought myself a Paillard Bolex camera becoming a member of the Hong Kong Amateur Cine Club.

  • the man walking on the street is you? MichaelRogge

  • Yes, that's me, twenty years old, walking to a Dutch bank I worked for. I stayed for six years in the British colony! Michael

  • thank for your reply

  • I think I see some of relatives walked by.
