I would love to move to Alaska some day but my line of work is very hard to find in Alaska (Machining...CNC machining or manual)..and from what I understand, Anchorage is my best bet. Oh well.
@TedH71 Many people who get to travel (as did I for this video) are often based in Anchorage. It might not be that far off of an idea to find a company based in Anchorage that you then fly out to for consulting or wahtnot...but of course I don't know your line of work very well. :-D
CNC machining is the programming of computers to cut and shape metal, ceramic, or plastic for various manufacturers for whatever they need. I only have a certificate in that and am trying to find an entry level job. I also have a 2nd certificate in Composite Technology which is just a fancy word for knowledge in how to manufacture high tech plastics such as what planes are starting to be made out of and lots of other things. Does that help?
I´ve been to Alaska by summer, urban and rural areas, but I ´ve heard by winter is very interesting too, I was born and And I grew up in the tropics, Probably I couldn´t live in there but I could be interesting to visit Alaska again but by winter.
i live here in shungnak, alaska. although i was not in this video.
to the people who thinks we're isolated, im sorry but we're not! we live in the most beautiful place there is in alaska. we have nice people here and i am damn proud to be an eskimo. only problem we got up here is our prices. we pay nealy 10 bucks for a gallon of gas. you all dont think its expensive, come live up here and see how we live. dont ever judge a book by its cover....
Alaska is a awesome place to live, but also unique in so many ways. I lived there for 19 years and miss it so much. My parents still live there and are moving to a small village about that size to a place called kotzebue. The one thing i miss the most about alaska is the peace, calm, quite, wild, landscapes. Like the newyorker said sick of the sirens, news, people, especially traffic jams. Anchorage still has bad jams, but if you live outside of anchorage it's not so bad. I miss it.
My daughter and family moved from Fairbanks to Kotzebue last month, it's been a difficult adjustment but they are slowlyl settling in. It's only for 2 years. I love Alaska (lived there for 12 years) but you couldn't pay me to live in the bush, although when I talked to my daughter she told me that a lot of people really like it there. I won't ever have the money to come and visit her but I wouldn't mind, I'd love to see Kotzebue (only in the summertime!)
To Mrs.Galyan: I just mapped Shungnak and discovered how truly rural this village is! The furthest north I got was Elmendorf! Not north enough..your video was a great production and a wonderful example to the world of rural life in Alaska. It must be a challenge to live in a so isolated place, but I could understand the appeal it would bring. Thank you for sharing your wonderful video. It is a beautiful place.
If you ever need a pal, you have me to say hello with.
Hi. Great video! I'm moving to Alaska at the end of next year. I always had love for Alaska and have decided that life is more than just money, it's about living!
Just got back from a 10 day Interior Alaskan tour! Truly God's Country!
I have the utmost admiration and awe for anyone who DOES live there year round--I for one could Not cope with 20 hrs of darkness a day in winter...or -45 oF average temp !!
Thank you for sharing a Wholesome, Healthy View of Life in your Neck of the Woods!
Beautiful scenery, beautiful people, the simple life, that's what life is all about, man you just can't beat that, someday I'll visit Alaska if its the last thing I ever do. Nice video montage too.
Revisting this video after many months. This is an amazing video, thanks so much for showing us the beauty of northern Alaska. It's a dream of mine to visit there one day. All the best :)
So true, my Mom still dosent understand why i want to move to Alaska so much. After living my whole life in San Diego California, she thinks im crazy to leave the perfect weather. And while some of my friends think im moving to a frozen hell, i know im headed to a paradise!
So true, Most people think of Alaska as nothing but a frozen hell but even in the winter we have some of the most breathtaking scenery. From the Northern Lights in the Dark of Winter to the days of July and June when the sun never goes down!! Where are you palnning on moving to??
thats the exact same situation with me. the only difference is that im in texas and im only 15. as soon as im 18, im moving to fairbanks. ive been wanting go to the last frontier scince i was 13!
same here! I'm 16 and I'm going to move up there as soon as i finish high school. I just built my first cabin in rural Oklahoma and I cant wait to do it again in Alaska.
you seem to be watching the same videos I did before I moved up here. Haha I wanted to move here when I was 17. Got a degree from KSU and then moved up here. Soon Ill head to the bush there I will be living in my dream.
I'm from Austin, TX but I've been going to school in Hawaii. I really want to go to Alaska next. I think Alaska will be a big adventure!! Thanks for the video.
Great video! I'm actually moving to Alaska in a couple years, probably stay in Anchorage for a little, and then when I get used to the climate, then maybe Sterling or Kenai.
And then after that I will see if I can handle a move to bush Alaska. ^^
dude im from Texas and i want to go to Alaska for 3 things good people not like it is here, snowboarding, and college its so beautiful i just hope that ill get there in 2 years
hey, im over here in denton texas and alaska is the only place i want to be at. you can ask any of my friends and they will tell you im obbsessed with this place. i know like everything there is to know about alaska and im only fourteen! as soon as im 18, im going to college there too.
really im here in Dallas i just cant wait to go to college in Alaska only 2 more years and i havent seen no snow in about 2 years i just want to be up there
Your music from Israel Kamakawiwo'ole (Iz) reminded me of my Hawaiian home . . . and seeing your video showed me why so many people from Hawaii settle in Alaska. It's a beautiful video - I can definitely understand why someone would want to live there. Thank you for sharing!
Thanks for the great video, I watch it a lot. I know know the man's name who sings I am so sorry he is no longer with us, but I am sure his music will live on. I know you have made a lot of people happy with this, peacefull, simple, video. Thanks again.
Krista, this is one of my favorite Video's and I really don't know why. The music is wonderful, who is the singer. The people are so real, Love there simple life Is there room for one more,Me! I listen to this often love it!
Oh and i live near anchorage and it really isn't that cold. I've been told that chicago has much harsher winters than we do only ours last longer. In the summertime it can get in the 80s and even the 100s in the interior. Alaska is very unique and diverse and it would take a lifetime to experience the full grandeur of the state.
You're correct, the cities on or near the southern coast of Alaska are a bit milder than the interior states such as Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota and the Dakotas. Northern Minnesota for example is often used by US automakers to test cold weather operation of their car and truck brands. No doubt there are places in the interior of Alaska are just as or colder, I think it's a travel and shipping issue.
People don't realize how big alaska really is. From the capital city, Juneau, to the northernmost city, barrow, is over 1100 miles. Alaska stratches more than 1000 miles from north to south! This means a big difference in how much daylight different parts of the state get. Above the arctic circle summer=light winter=dark but in southern cities like Juneau the daylight in the summer and winter is comparable to Seattle or Vancouver.
Same here. I've never even set foot on ALaska but I KNOW I want to live there.
Is there a website or a book about "how to" move an live in Alaska for people? (You know there's books about moving to Paris or London... but I can't find one about relocating to Alaska.)
Also, I've read that the cost of living in Alaska is high. Really???
honestly my first two yrs of living in the city side of alaska i hated it....but now its been 5yrs and living in wasila (which still isnt as rural as this) and i appreciate it and will be sad to leave
Ohhhh... I sure enjoyed watching this video! I think I'm going to have a piece of pilot bread with tea now (Alaskans know what I'm talking about eh?!?). I'm currently going to school in Mass. and seeing this vid made my heart feel all fuzzy. It's good to see where my dear friend Ms. Jack teaches too! Cheers.

Dear, old folk, sweet children...looks like a hard life. I second the commentarist from Europe, thanks for a glimpse of somewhere I'll probably never get to see any other way.
I love these little films of remote isolated places. It's like getting a glimpse of the moon when you come from a big city in Europe like I do. One of the best things about Youtube stuff like this.
When I first posted this, it was just as something fun to share. I never imagined that so many people would get so much enjoyment from it! I am very glad. :)
As far as getting to see more remote parts of Alaska, nothing would really be stopping you except for cost. To get to more remote parts, it will take usually another 1 or 2 flights from Anchorage to get to your destination, so it really depends on what you want to see; Alaska's pretty large and diverse.
Thanks for posting this. If I may, I have a question/favor to ask of those of you who were born in and live in Alaska. I plan on visiting this summer, but am interested in getting to see Alaska in its truer form -- in other words, not the typical tourist trip. Do you have any suggestions for the trip, and places I should focus on, or anything that I just can't miss while there? I'd appreciate your help very much. Thanks in advance.
