  • Great!

  • Sweet sound! Is that a lathe cross slide connected to the pushrod? genius! Later, Rick.

  • @popnstart Yes, that's the compound slide from a Hardinge HLVH lathe! Good eye.

  • Forgive me for writing this I luv that engine but it sound like the first stag flim evermade like a creeky old bed and someone huffing

  • it's kind a fast stoping, why?

  • What would happen if you didn't let it "miss"?

  • @slurp812 It would overspeed, this is the speed governor system.

  • whats the rpm and torque

    what can this convert into

    how much fuel is used

  • You know.. Some people keep those little boxes in their bedroom that sound like rushing water to help them sleep. Personally, I'd take one of these. Very soothing sound :) That or fire, because something about crackling and popping fire is very comforting for me. Anyways, awesome engine! Now you just need to rig up an old pumpjack in your yard so you can give it something to do ;)

  • huffs and puffs like a hot dog.. haha.. nice engine :)

  • I dare you to stick your hand in there. Im kidding, dont actually do it.

  • @LakeErieFising Funny you should mention that, I actually did get my hand ripped open by this beast about 5 years ago requiring over 150 stiches.

  • @USRIFLEM1 Damn.. That sucks. Could have been worse though..

  • so sweet.

  • the cylinder looks like a gallon tomato soup can...with the label ripped off!..lol..nice work!

  • looks nice

  • Like the dovetail slide for the pushrod!

  • tama iowa i live near there

  • It sounds like a bulldog breathing.

  • That thing you build so very very nice. Beautiful "dachshund" sound too.

  • Congratulation for this wonderful work!

I think its work for months to build this engine.

    5*!

  • That is a very nice engine,

  • Beautiful piece of engineering, what were hit & miss engines used for?

  • They were used to power almost everything from washing machines to farm equipment to water pumps to generators to boats. Anything that could be run off a belt could be powered by a hit and miss.

  • We still Use Them in MtVernon Illinois

area To run oil well pumps -- many

of Our engines are 50 plus years old

still working --they run off -" Well" gas

or --for city folk --natural gas -- and they

    run forever --!

  • bit of a wobble on that lefthand flywheel

  • Yes, there's a story behind that! I had a rather exciting pre-ignition while experimenting with different mufflers running on gasoline, it sucked a flame back in through the base port. The engine stood up on end & loosened one of the pins on my crank assembly. The crank is now welded, but not perfect. Someday I may machine a replacement.

  • 1.3L, eh? It's bigger than most motorcycle engines. I like it.

  • now THATS what a hit n miss is supposed so sound like :) verry neat

  • Sounds like a Dachshund with the sniffles !!!

    Good work BTW.

  • @J2OLDS haha lol,

where the heck do you have the word "Dachshund" from??

In german it is either a "Dachs" what is a badger or a "Hund" what is a dog, but a

Dachshund??? This is too funny in german.

BTW I agree with the sniffle lol.

  • @J2OLDS

Ah, I just learned that "Dachshund" is a common word in the US for what we call a Dackel, that is a very popular shot legged dog around here (that once was supposed to chase budgers),if you also call them wiener dog, than it is really the same dog, I never heard this word before, but I will keep it in mind.

  • Nice job on this engine, sounds good!

  • Did you do all the castings at home aswell as the helical gear drive??

  • The base was fabricated from .75 flat steel & ground to look like a casting. The flywheels are from an Associated Chore Boy.The gears were from a John Deere 4020, and the cylinder machined from an 8 inch solid aluminum bar, no castings.

  • How did you make the crank, rod, and piston? Does it also have a cylinder slieve? What is bore and stroke? Thanks. Awesome engine and great work!!

  • Oh my Gade thats lovely, tell us about the building of it, was it from plans ??

  • Yes, the ported exhaust idea was stolen from Gade. No plans used here but my own. Thanks
