I was there when Fred recorded his live version of this at the Elephant in Woodstock NY with Monte Dunn on 2nd guitar, Monte was Karen Dalton's old man and she preformed with Monte as well...
I have just discovered Eddi tonight and I'm in awe... her connection to the material is so moving. Reminds me of the beautiful, late Eva Cassidy. She, too, had that ability to transport you to another place and truly move you through her masterful and soulful performances. Thank you for sharing. x
I think this may be the best version of this song! The combination between her voice and this song, is just, amazing! I have listened to this more times than I can possibly count. (to see who I am-- google or you tube: chris king demo reel)
This is so...there are no words that can adequately describe how beautifull the interpretation of this song is, Eddi sings it with such passion. rosstyuk, I an so gratefull that you put this here on YouTube. Thanks. : )
I'm in love with this woman since the Fairground Attraction era. Eddi, you are the best!...I just hope someone here in Québec city could invite you in our summer festival. Well, we are posting the organnisers the idea. Peace!
Let us not bitch about `who or where or how`.....Fred Neil....thank you. Eddi Reader...thank you for reminding us how great he was and how great you are!
The TB version is not "easier" unless you are talking about the Baritone of Neil versus the five octave range of Buckley...which still does not make it any easier! The lyrics are not that dramatically changed, and there is just as much passion in TB's version. This is a horrible pseudo New Age piece of drivel.
Geez,ID.. that 's a little harsh, don't ya think? Also, really NOT accurate.. this does not qualify as New Age..it's Folk Music, plain & simple.Reader's take on the tune is,
to be sure, a little eccentric,(vocally) though honestly felt.Still a tremendous tune.
Who said anything about TB's version being "easier"?
"msbfd" above said that perhaps people start with the Saturday's child verse because TB's version does, & that version is "easier to find".
& as timjmoran says, there's nothing particularly new age-y about this version - just a woman with a huge heart & a great voice (several octaves too, I'd guess ;~)
Anyway, I'm off to see her play on Tues - can't wait.
WOW..... i adore this womans voice and intelligence and originality.....Best export from Scotland methinks xxxx a tribute and treasure xxxxx so versatile xxx
Why does everyone insist on starting with the "Saturday's Child" verse when Fred didn't? Also, there are some songs that just are "owned" by their authors...this is one of them. Nobody can do it justice but Fred. He and the dolphins are one now.
No, Fred Died in 2001. Good stories of Fred and the NYC folk scene in Bob Dylan's Chronicles vol. 1. There's been a bit of Neil revival thanks to brilliant Sopranos 2006 "The Ride" episode with Christopher smacked out and "The Dolphins" as soundtrack.
Where and how did Fred die ? I always lived in hope he would do something further -- he was and is unique.
Here ( New Zealand) we have only had the last episode of the Sopranos which was the catylyst for the question. Damn I am sorry to hear that about Fred.
Freddie died of cancer. He had som habits that weren't healthy (to say the least) but addiction to fame and fortune isn't on thze list. We have his legacy in songs, that's all what matters in the end.
people should also get the Fred Neil CD's, this is just one of a dozen 'one of a kind' songs. interesting that there is no actual film of Fred Neil on YouTube. is he still alive in Florida?
Brilliant!!!Thanks for posting this! Where's it from? Is it an Irish TV show? This is still one of my favourite Eddi recordings. People should check out her "Mirmama" album. Great singing with a Scottish accent!!!

this one actually makes me appreciate Tim Buckley's version which was basically a 'read through'

It's because they are copying Tim Buckley's version... it's much easier to find than Fred Neil's, or at least it was until recently.

You might want to write to Fred's singing partner, Vince Martin, you can contact him through "My Space."
Some of the best music ever made, they made together.
