  • I want a PS3 with backward compatibility so I can play my GTA 3 era games what do you strongly suggest I should buy?

  • @flatbob123 what's that call

  • there is an app on the psn store where you get a software update for ps2 data

  • PS1 works great on my PS3, and that's where the best FF's were (7,8). I haven't tried PS2 yet, though I still have my old PS2 console in a closet somewhere if I really need it.

  • still have my ps3 ceche01 motorstorm edition.. mine only have the ps2 software emulation still kicks ass tough.. i have ps1 ps2 ps3 in one console not to mention those emulators lol epic console

  • wow, it seems everyone but those with the first generation PS3 have BW compatibility... (I'm one of those lucky people! :D)

  • when sony stops making ps2 how people (like little kids) gonna play ps2 games because i dont think they like to play ps3 games

  • @d3vils4t4n they stopped making them yes but their still all over the place just go to any game store and they usualy have them floating around

  • I think it bullshit that you can only it on ps3 backup compatibility it really bullshit ok it's

  • It only does everything but Backward Compatibility

  • What model on ps3 did you have?

  • Just bought 1 with Backward Compatibility yaaay!!! in sweden so 2325 SEK but it will be 326 $ in USD thumbs up if "Nice Price"

  • @matteforlife

What is that in the U.S. version? I would have liked to have played FFX and FFX-2 international versions for both.

  • @ussco I can play ps2 and PS1 games n sorry the price was 200 $ ;D

  • @usso sorry but the FW was also 3.41

  • ps3 "it only does everything?" ps2? bc?

  • can the australian 80GB version run NFS: underground 2?

  • Comment removed

  • U hav a ps2 now and it's kinda old and I want a new ps3 but my mom says no cuz it's a waste of money and it doesn't play ps2 games. And I just explained it to her that some backwards compatible ones do and she doesn't know what to say. What are some other really good features that I could convince her to get one. For my new room

  • @bumsyj12 How old are you? maybe you can get a temporary job or something and buy it...I don't know how that department is doing right now in the US since I don't live there anymore but yeah...

  • @bumsyj12 It's a blueray player and you can put music and videos and pictures and if you have wireless internet connection from your pc you can get free internet on your ps3

  • it is true that games of ps2 and ps1 look blurry or kinda square on the ps3 backward comp? or looks normal? am still undecided if get a ps3 backward comp or a ps3 slim somebody can answer my question

    thanks

  • @magnumluis89 The problem is that a backwards compatible PS3 will cost you much more (only on Ebay, and it's going to be much more expensive if you want a brand new one, I wouldn't recommend a used one) and they are slightly less reliable than the non-compatible models and even the slim...they can overheat if you play for too long...

  • @magnumluis89 I really cant say, i play ps2 and ps1 games all the time on my ps3, but i dont remember how they looked on the ps2 so i cant compare, i know that the cinematics in final fantasy X still look fucking badass on my ps3.

  • @omarct

I'm thinking of buying a ps3, but I won't if backwards compatibility is not available. How are you able to play the best Final Fantasy of all time on a ps3? Is it only certain models that have this function?

  • @ussco some of the old fat ones have ps2 and ps1 compatibility

  • @MTFAMV

Which models? Are the older ones more worth it than the newer ones, like the slim model?

  • @ussco yea only the old models have it, but be careful some old ones dont, check wiki/google for which models do, mine is the 80gb one( i think there is 2 80gb models). I think you are better off buying a ps2 for 50-100 bucks and a $250 or less ps3 , than trying to find an old one that is backwards compatible though(since ppl tend to sell them really expensive even though they are used bc of ps2 compatibility), unless you can find it for about the same/lower price.

  • Yeah...I have the PS3 backwards comp model and have had no issues playing PS1/2 & 3 games. The only advantage I think the slim has over the old launch systems is that they are not as prone to YLOD like the old systems are but it's a small price to pay to be able to play all formats of your games in one system.

  • @BlkApache what is wrong with this yold i mean i have 2 ps3 and playem every day one is the new 80gb and the other 1 is the old one i play all the time never had a problemwith a ps3 its because u dont take care of aka clean it once a while and keep it kool like a fan on it

  • My brother has got the ps3 60gb console the one that is still backwards compatible. I want to play mgs 3 on it because its one of my fav games of all time however my brother is not letting me because he seems to think playing this game will damage his blue-ray drive and essentialy break his ps3. he says i can play it but if the blu-ray drive ever breaks ive to buy him a new ps3, so i just want to clear up is it possible by playing mgs 3 i could break his blu-ray drive?

  • @hendoRFC So you are saying that your brother thinks that a ps2 dvd has a higher risk of breaking the blu ray drive than a ps3 blu ray disc? I don't think so, i never heard about specific discs killing ps3 blu ray drives.

There is much more risk breaking the blu ray drive ( or getting the yellow light of dead) if your ps3 is getting too hot which happened on many 60gb versions. Keep the console from a warm place (Like in the sun) and have it in a place where the air can flow through the ps3.

  • @morrisz2 cheers, he thinks by playing a ps2 game on his console could damage his bluray drive becuase it spins at a lower speed or something.

  • @hendoRFC hmm, i've never looked into that, can't help you with that srry

  • So if I get a PS3 with backwards compatibility will I be able to play RE4 for PS2?

  • ff12 is the whole reason why i want backwards compatibility and of course sony doesnt make the ps3 compatible :(

  • @ummmmyeah1 You're a fan on Final Fantasy as well? Good well let's talk then uh well i've heard that they can bring it back with an update but it could be a while to then but keep the game, they make make a final fantasy collection maybe for PS3 with all the games on it.

  • @ummmmyeah1 Just look around on ebay or craigslist for one. I even saw a few in pawnshops at the same price as other used ps3's. The pawn shops I suppose didn't realize what they had. You can easily tell which ones are backwards compatible, as the ones that are have 4 usb ports compared to 2.

My PS3 plays PS2 games via emulation, and I play some old faves like GTA, FF 10 & 12, and GOW. I can't tell a difference and I've never encountered a problem.

  • is it european?

  • ps2 games are recorded on a dvd-rom, the ps3 can play dvd-rom on any model, so why can't it play ps2 games? I think sony can give every1 backwards compatibility with a simple firmware update. All its lacking is the software. Everything else is there sony, why must u tount us?

  • Hay everyone could someone please tell why GOD OF WAR 1 & 2 can be played on a PS3, is it because they put them on blu ray CDs or something if you guys know something please put a comment on my channel

  • @93vincentvalentine they pretty much made a ps3 version just like they do with Madden on ps2 and 3. So I'm guessing the ps3 version of GOW is only capable with ps3 its not a ps2 game.

  • can some one make a list of which ps2 games play on the ps3

  • if Sony doesn't bring this thing back.. I'll likely sell my PS3 for a BC compatible one.

  • Just be happy we can buy used games. companys are trying to crack down on that which is rediuculous. If there game doesn't sale, obviously it sucks.

  • if sony kept its backward compatibility it would make more money.

many people still play ps2 games.

they should do this on ALL ps3 models.

  • @393506 not true. too expensive for sony to make backward compatible, plus they are try to target revenue from the ps2 console slims.

  • well maybe but think in the long run people who still play ps2 games like me would love to have this on a ps3 slim.sony will still make more money

  • @393506 it sucks for the hardcore gamers but in the long run. the consumer gets a cheaper product.

  • what do you mean by hardcore gamers game freaks?that still would be a great thing for backward compatiblity on a ps3

  • @393506 people who value all forms of games are hardcore.

  • oh well thanks

  • lol i have a 40 gb fat model almost since launch and i can play ps2 games. i thought only the 20 and 60 could play ps2. some things never cease to amaze me

  • how come when i play this on my ps3 it looks much worse! its got all sorts of jittery lines

  • Dude how many usb slot do you have on this backward compatibility ps3 of yours???

  • on sonys website.. the playstations that a re backwards compatible has 4 usb slots, compared to 2 usb slots on all of the others that arent

  • The 60, 20, and 80(older model) PS3s have 4 usbs.

  • agrh im so jelous u got a 60gb ps3 lool mine is 89gb which is still 2nd best but i rlly wanna play my ps2 games on my ps3....if there would only be a way 2 modify it....

  • gen 1 and 2 ps3 owners are screwed because the older ps3 had everything (4 usb slots, memory card readers and ps2 support) but are likely to YLOD and therefore need a new ps3. Only option, ps3 slim, sad I know. Good news is that the ps3 is now cheaper!

  • hahah ylod, buddy that happens to 6% of all ps3 owners, and that mostly happens to the 40gig and 80gig, now stop bitching cuz 60 gig is teh best and ps3slimm sucks balls cuz i upgraded my 60 gig to a 300gig and it works fine!

  • No not for other people. I've seen alot of 60gb

owners who has ylod on the gaming forums and they are pissed at Sony for removing that console of shelves. Yes 60gb is the best but the slim is worthy because of it's price. So for those ps3 owners with broken 60gb including other damages cannot get another 60gb from shelves.

  • jackassbobby the ylod is just hardrive failure you can get one on ebay for 30 bucks and put yer ps3 in a ventilated area

  • i heard that sony will never add ps2 compatibilty to ps3 anymore. it's true. i read it and i'm dissapointed. i mean i understand that they discontinued the emulation chip because that's what made the ps3 worth 500$, but why can't they sell an installation cd for ps2 compatibility for 30-50$. wit the ps3 u can play dvd's so u don't need to connect a dvd, neither a cd player, neither a blue ray player, neither a ps1 console, and they ruined it not wit including the ps2. did sony ever hear of space

  • the entire ps2 sells for 90 bucks. optical drive, network chip, memory, cpu, gpu, controller ports, case, 1 controller, power supply unit, video cables, boxing etc. sold with a profit fot 90 bucks. EE+GS will not set you back that much so it's no excuse for ditching ps2 compatibility. i would pay 50 bucks more so I can play ps2 games with my hdtv improved graphics and all. sony dropped the ball.

  • It's stupid I know... I have a 60 GB and that can play ps2 games. I'm thinking of not buying the new slim but I've gotten the yellow light of death.. soo... I'm left with no choice...

  • So the PS3 Slim can't play PS2 games? D:

  • Exactamundo!

  • @HeavenlyLili yeah, on the ps3, unlike the ps2, the emotion engine (the emulation chip) was not a chip on the motherboard like the ps3. Instead on the ps3, the emotion engine was the blu ray drive, and blu ray drives are expensive.

  • @HeavenlyLili

They tried that with a previous 80gb model with 4 USB ports in a patch and it was even more faulty than the 20-60gb ones. Besides, I am no longer in the PS3 for the backwards compatibility when I can use the PS2 for that. This is because certain games mess up if played on a PS3, you need an adapter for older accessories, and there is the control lag that even Sony can't fix it. I was able to fit the PS2 & 3, Wii, Xbox, and VHS/DVD combo player in the same space.

  • neither does the 120 gb

  • does final fantasy XII work for the 40gb ps3 without the backwards compatability???

  • It'll work but for optimal ps2 performance on the ps3 you want the 60 gig

  • rumors have it they might bring it back in a patch

  • the ps1 Backward Compatibility isnt that great either the games looks so pixelated even if you use HDMI cables they should atleast just add better filter settings

  • does hdmi work on ps3 while using a ps1 game if so tell me how good or worse it looks

  • I just dont understand why these guys would discontinue PS2 BC but keep fucking PS1 when you cant even buy a PS1 game in a store besides a Pawn shop! I mean does it truly hurt just to smack a chip in a damn system then box it up...

  • is it just the 80 gig that has backwards compatability??

  • fuck sony,wanna play rugby 08

  • does all ps3 80gb hav the backward compatability ?

  • most of them do

  • the last one was the MSG4 bundle after that sony took it off.

  • Sony, bring back PS2 Compatibility!

  • is there a way of puttin backward compatability software on like a new hdd e.g. gettin the old software den put it on new hdd

  • i find it so anoying that the 80gb ps3 dosent have backwards compatability with ps2, espescialy since the ps2 is one of the most popular consoles of all time!

  • yea i know, thats freaking retarded for sony 2 make it like that.... thats bullshit..

  • are u sure because i can pay re4 ps2 on a ps3 80gb

  • i have that game but it not working on my PS3 why is that ??? i really need your help on it i got a 40gb ps3 and it telling mw it wont work with it why ?????

  • Because 40gb is the CHEAP model.

  • 40 GB PS3 has no PS2 backwards compatibility whatsoever... sorry dude but they got me with it to

  • thanks soooooooo much

  • so you like make a new section on the harddrive for your ps2 games instead of using a memory card?? someone please reply and help clear it up

  • My 80gb PS3 has played every PS1 and PS2 games I have inserted... (it's the one that came with the MGS4) what does my PS3 doesn't have comparing it with others???

thanks for the one(s) who answer

  • Your ps3 has something called the "Backwards Compatability", meaning you can play ps1 ps2 and ps3 games. YOu're quite lucky to have got one.

  • do u know there away i can play ps2 games on my ps3 80gb and i have a flashdrive

    i really want ps3 80gb play ps2 games

  • i got my ps3 60gb model on 1080p and ps2 games look like shit even if i put the resolution down it still looks like a turd wrapped round a ps2 game with fried fuck put on.... . .........yeah you get the point

  • so are you saving it to the hardrive or a card, beacause your talking about slots, please clarify

  • it's on the hard drive. it tricks the ps2/1 games into thinking that there is actually a card inserted, even though it's being stored onto the hard drive

  • what playstation 3 model is this guy using the 20, 60, or 4 usb 80gb model

  • i need someone to help me to make my new ps3 80gbs to play ps2 games

  • sony removed the option

  • Sony seem to be giving up on getting the HUGH number of PS2 users to buy a PS3, I think they don't care if you get a 360 instead.

  • sony is fucken retarded they are too greedy and only want less production costs...now those retards are making a 160GB model. I got a 80GB in november and it had no backwards compatibility. Sony is falling apart

  • I can get my ps2 game to work on my ps3 but can't get it to register the "ps button" press!! someone help? I can connected thru the usb cable

  • you could use wired ps2 or ps1 controllers on ps3? and you don't need to save your old ps1 and 2 memory cards you could make new ones on the hard drive? alright cool now i just need to find a ps3 that plays ps1-2 games hopefully they'll put a new model out eventually.

  • if ps3 cannot play my huge ps1, ps2 favourite games. then i will never buy it. game over Sony!

  • Do you get rumble with the ps3 or xbox360 when Backwards compatible games are in the disc drive, so do you or don't you?, there a way the ps2 adapter to ps3, can allow rumble, I missed out on a lot of playsation games, and all this for being a retard, becuase My ps2 broke now it was turned and going microsoft made me get the xbox360 and They had to repair it 4 times, so I want to know as much as I can about ps3, so CAN the ps3 controller get rumble when playing ps2 games, IDC about ps1 games.

  • i know the 360 has rumble but when you play original xbox games on it the sound sucks and its slow

  • doesnt the motorstorm pack have at leasst software emulation

  • hey people. i am thinking on buying the 60 gb ps3. but i have a uestion. smeone pleaseeeee reply.

As some of u know that the ps3 remote has a sencor for any direction u go it will go that direction from the controller if u move it.! can u turn the motion sencor off? because i am thinking about wht if i am playing gta 4 and suddenly i shift the remote left and i wanna go right. if i will crash . please reply.

  • I seen a video where you can take it off, and its only on when driving, of course hhaha, that would be fucked up.

  • yea

  • yeah you can turn the motion sensor off but it is usually off by default

  • If you get the MGS4 PS3 its the last 80GB with backwards capabilitiy

  • if i go to walmart how do i know it is a MGS4 ps3? what does mgs4 mean

  • mgs4 means metal grar solid 4. thats a very awesome stelth game

  • never mind. i just found out.

how do I know if it came out before the MGS4

  • good question, lol

  • will gta san andreas or other gta games/ true crime GAMES

work fine with the backwards compatabiltiy

if not theN i'm just buying another PS2

  • hey can u play ps2 online with the ps3?

  • on what version of the PS3 did u play the game? and can i play FF12 on my 80gig Ps3. in the booklet that came with my ps3 it said that the Ps3 is NOT compatible with PS2 hardware. on the internet it sais i can play Ps2 games on the PS3 . now i dont know what to believe

  • Well, all 80 gb models made before Sept. has BC, but then they made the new model which DOESN'T have bc, which sucks for anyone who wants to buy a 80 gb PS3 now because they no longer make the bc ones.

  • i believe that the Metal Gear Solid 80gb ps3 is the most recent PS2 backwards compatible console :X the newer 80gb doesnt work lol

  • ok lets see you prove that bitch! ps3 is better in every way

  • first of all, a game console does not have graphics besides the built in interface. the ps3 has much more powerful hardware including 8 cores (the xbox only has 3). the graphics on the game is determined by the type of engine the game is using and how much they can fit onto the disk. an xbox 360 dvd has about 15gbs of space while a ps3 bd has about 50gbs of space.

  • yea i know even the ps2 have more space and its disc than the 360 thats why i hate it.

  • no a 360 does not have better graphics

  • your 360 fanboy-ness makes me wanna throw up.you would think you could get some accurate faqs on your "console"

  • Emotion Engine aka Hardware for ps2 Backward Compatibility (20&60GB)

Emulation aka Software for ps2 Backward Compatibility (80GB) (the latest 60GB : rare)

  • they dont even make a 60 or 20 gb anymore. so i dont know what the fuck u r talking about

  • i dont get it, why would a 20 gig (lower than the 40 gig) let you play ps2 + ps1 games and a higger 40 gig only ps1 :S

  • GB is just a space. The higher GB does not mean the system is greater or faster. PS3 old 20 and 60 GB is actually the perfect playstation 3 ever made if you prefer playing ps2 on ur ps3. Old ps3 20and60Gb series basically has PS2 Backward Compatibility Hardware which mean you have both ps2 and ps3 system in one. The ps3 80GB has software ps2 B.W.C that is why cost same as 60GB. Some ps2 does not work or has some minor problem but most of Major game work perfectly.

  • cant you install an emotion engine or something directly into a 40gb, new 80gb, or the new 160gb? (the ones without bc) and if so can you just take it out of a ps2 or what? thx

  • I think the emotion engine cost about $50 -$100 and no idea where you get it because since that hardware discontinued unless you steal one of em from your friend 60Gb or get the cheap CHIPS in illegal market that rare to find for $10. and the install fee about $20-25 depends how hard to put it (this is base on my old ps1 and ps2 back in Korea and china) took me 2-3 day to finish. My guess is around $100-$150 or even higher. Just get ps2 why ppl so desperate to play ps2 game on ps3?

  • oh, lordy... ill just get a ps2... thx XD

  • PS2 = to the power Emotion engine that is how powerful that chip is and that is why the old playstation 3 was cost so much.

  • Theres a 20 gb now? LOL i never knew that...i was playing FF10 and in cgi cutscenes it sometimes went blurry, will the ps1/ps2 smoothing option settle this?

  • okay just for everyones info futureshop guys told me you can't play ps1 or 2 games on it and that is a crock of bullshit hook it up to the internet and download the patches it suddenly makes a thing pop up in game that says memory card utility ps/ps2 so any of you that believe that should be shot and shot again

  • If you have the 40 gig version of the ps3, it should'nt work.

  • does that shit work in ps3 80 gig coz i wana play that shit.

  • ps2 still owns.

  • I heard that only the 60GB and the 20GB support backward-compatability. But, unfortunatly, the 40GB wdoesn't.

  • The 40gb only supports PS1 backward compatibility...but the 60gb, 20gb and the 80gb all support both.

  • ok well plzz pm me if u find a way

  • dude when i put a ps2 game in my 40gb ps3 it says unsuported format and wen i try to play it it says ps3 does not support ps2 format whyy can u tell me how to fix this plzzz any 1

  • this happens with me too

  • Yeah dude same here. It is not compatible with ps2 games. I am trying a way to find a way to do it.

  • Im sorry to break it too you lot. But there is no way of doing it. The 40gb PS3 lacks any PS2 hardware, and therefore has no way of running the game. PS3 20gb and 60gg (NTSC) had the emotion engine (ps2 processor) and Graphics Syntheisizer (ps2 graphics card) to play its games. PS3 60gb PAl and 80gb used just the graphics chip, meaning it could play a limited number of PS2 games. 40gb lacks all PS2 hardware and therefore cannot play any. Unless you hack your PS3 and put the chips in there...

  • FUCK!!!!! i've saving money for around 1 yr to buy a PS3 when i buy it it's a 40GB! fuck you!!!!!!! and by the way the 40 gb one has backward thing! retards

  • Why does the 40GB one not work? Is there any way to get around it? This is gay!

  • dude the 40gb version don't have backward compatibility only the 60gb and 80gb have it

  • 20gb is backward compatibility too

  • i thought they stopped making and selling the 20gb

  • they did, im just glad i got one before they stopped making them. it looks amazing all black XD

  • People are just pussies, here is how you do it... Install linux as "Another OS" or what the hell ever, then jump into say OS, then download and run (or can be already installed by making your own Live CD) PCSX2 or some other form of PS2 emulator that runs well, download PS2 Bios, sxy torrent, or rip from your old dusty ps2 (if it works), then place the Bios into the Bios folder of the emulator, start up emulator, pop in game.. HOLY HELL! Instead of whining I got something to work the way I want.

  • Do u have a 40gb ps3?

  • im wit u... that's so ficking GAY!! Sony...u dissapionted me wit that shit! make a Update thing so we can add to the ps3 to run PS2 games cuz it sucks!! and the PS3 40GB has backward thing in Sistem settings u can see it!

  • every ps1 and ps2 game i have tried in my 60 gb ps3 have worked no problem and the graphics do look slightly smoother when smoothing etc is turned on

  • i created a ps2 iternal memory card but wat happens. the ps2 disk still dose not work!:(

  • backwards compatability is no longer supported on new models (except 80GB, thank you sony FOR SCREWING OVER EUROPE AND NOT RELEASING THE 80 HERE!). the problem is that without the EE/GPU chip, it needs to be done by software. but because sony cant program properly to save their lives (2.00 firmware anyone?) they gave up and only support ps1 games. microsoft are still updating their list because they know what they are doing.

  • 20GB 60GB and 80GB you can play PS2 games on. Few games wont work, they either freeze or have gameplay problems. If you guys have the 40GB one

    your unlucky lol.

  • every game i tryed freezes dude,why w

  • IS THIS THE 80GB

  • I put ratchet deadlocked on my Ps3 and when I played it, all of the character movements were slow. Now it freezes the screen everytime I try to go to the level I want to go to on the game. All my other ps3 games work fine

  • can you play any ps2 game on the ps3?

  • depends on which one

  • you rich bastard! i really want a ps3 but ent got the money! lolz

  • xbox sucks go play halo in ya basements! i will always like Playstation more than anything else!

  • Manhunt 2 is awesome !!!

  • can any1 help i have made an internal memery card and put the ps2 game into the ps3 and it wont let me play it!

  • all these menus, and for what reson?

its like there trying to make game consoles into pc's

whats wrong with putting the disc in the console, and start playing games, not spending hours fannying around with pointless menus.

  • so is it complicated to play ps2 games on ps3

  • no, just put in the disc and ur on

  • thanks man

  • Great demo. Wish the XBR4 was out with HDMI 1.3 for the PS3.
